  1. You're right on laker...guess that's why I always fished more in the winter.
  2. That's interesting laker.. I've heard mention of Stanlys...where can you get?? Far as chumming, I don't know if that would be, but, it would be a slickway of doing it, lol.
  3. I may be mistaken but isn't it paddlefish eggs that are sold as a cheap immitation for real caviar, if so, I would think they would be good eatin.
  4. Good pics pat...it's really hard to desribe how steep cardiac is if you've never been there. A picture is worth a thousand words...so true, thanks for posting them. Getting up that sob ate a pair of my waders one time.
  5. Nice catch, I bet those stripers are a blast on a flyrod...thanks for the report and pics, stay after em.
  6. I'm not a fly fisherman but gotta admit...to me that fly has big brown wrote all over it !!
  7. Just curious, I have always done alot of winter fishing and have fought frozen eyes on my rods more than I wish to remember. Has anyone ever seen a rod with heated eyes on it...seems in colder regions someone would have invented such a thing. Wouldn't it be fairly easy to make a removable butt plate on a rod handle which held batteries and a wire than ran the length of the rod connecting the eyelets forming a circuit. Is their such a rod that anyone has ever seen?...I can't imagine over the years someone not making one, if not, someone with more money than me should invent one, I'd sure purchase it.
  8. Montauk has a little of everything to offer...you should find water that suites what you like. Most of the deeper pools are above the hwy. bridge you come in on and below the bridge more shallow water for the most part. Remember if you fish below the park it's a blue ribbon area...1 18" fish allowed and artificial only, no soft plastics. I know I have said it before...in the park don't forget the ole 'Pellet Fly'...after all it's what they have eaten their entire lives. I don't fly fish much but one other fly fisherman on the boards said tying the pellet fly was like matching the hatch, sort of, lol. good luck
  9. Walleye are a cool water species and nocturnal by nature. I think what makes them hard to catch sometimes is they also are a suspended fish. I know very shallow smaller lakes won't even sustain them. Cloudy conditions are definately better and once you find the depth they are at stick with it. Being a low light fish they tend to hang in the deeper water especially on sunny days...or areas that are shaded as long as the water is still cool. As the water temps warm I feel they hang in the deeper water due to lighting conditions and water temp. They are the largest member of the 'Perch' family and IMO eat as well as any pan fish there is. Timing still should be decent for you...might hang a big old sow that's got her business done. Good luck
  10. Cardiac, suicide, same bluff. It's probably 2 to 3 miles?? below where the park dumps in. There are 3 accesses on that strech...Cardiac which as a Parking Lot at the end of the road right at the bluff. Short distance to the water but one heck of a steep hill to go down and alot steeper coming up, lol. If you lose your footing going down you could hurt yourself...it's pretty darn steep. There is a parking spot on the same road as cardiac a mile and a half or so before you get to cardiac on the right side of the road. Follow the apparant path and the water is about a 15 min.?? walk...brings you out on the river quite aways above cardiac. The lowest access is Scotts Ford...the water is considerably bigger on the lower strech so bank fishing would be difficult. The best method of fishing the trout area on the Meremac is floating it...8,9 miles, a good one day trip. All three places have marked parking areas as far as I know. Hope this helps
  11. There are several nice fish caught, some holdovers from c & r and they always throw some lunkers (worn out old broodstockers over 3 lbs.) in for good measure. It's a big deal to some at the parks to get your name on the 'Lunker Board' and they give out patches for a lunker which like I said is anything over 3 lbs.
  12. Before they come remind me and I'll be glad to let you know the river conditions, sound cool??
  13. Drain plugs are sweet...don't know why all models don't have them, on second thought, yeah I do, lol. Having worked in a garage for several years my advise...if the fluid smells and appears to be burnt but still shifting good just change the fluid only. Sometimes I have seen changing the filter lead to other problems...loosens up debris or something, don't really know. Be sure they put the proper fluid in it. The old saying 'If it aint broke don't fix it' holds alot of merit.
  14. I enjoy your site just as is. If anyone needs info concerning anything there are generally plenty of options out there in these days of technology. Whenever I seek info on anything I generally get swamped with info...almost too much at times. my 2 cents...
  15. Just giving a weather report, Just measured on the back deck...little under 7 "...still coming down but's let up considerably. Anyone headed to Montauk drive careful.[
  16. - Here's a couple of pics...one of the weather as of now and still coming down hard, this is in the Montauk area and one where my old butt will be, lol
  17. Snowing in this area right now...it's sticking pretty good, kinda strange considering how warm the past few days have been. Their calling for 1 to 3 inches, we'll see. Being a weatherman is one of the few jobs I know that one can be wrong half the time and still keep your job...guess I should have been a meteoroligist, lol. Everyone be careful and enjoy the opening day 'Cluster*$*k'.
  18. Those are dandys, If that's you in the pic what's your secret to staying young looking, lol. Couldn't resist. Glad you had a good trip.
  19. Hey guys, I don't do the park thing but can see where it's alot of fun...good people, good times...probably more a tradition than a serious fishin trip. Just a word of advise, STAY LEGAL!!...I know the opener is a big day for the agents. I have seen some that try to take a limit of fish back to their camp, unload, kill a little time and then do it again...don't do it, just aint worth it. I have seen some guys get popped for up to 40, 50 fish in their coolers on opening day. All the agents will be plain clothed and have a plan for who covers what strech and they talk with each other on what's going on and who's seen what. It's a big pay day for them so don't think for a second they don't take advantage of it. Every park in the state will have as many agents as they can get on hand. They will all meet in the hatchery, plan their attack and then off they go. If you see someone doing more looking around than fishing chances are good it's an agent. The 'Man" will be a watchin so don't let what otherwise will be a good time ruin your trip. Fishin itself costs enouph these days without a big fine to go along with it, ya know. The ones I do wish they would pop are the guys that go down a few days before the opener, spot a few big ones and then grab em by drifting a white jig right in their mouths. They are quite good at it and you'll see their names on the lunker boards year after year...problem is, if it's caught in the mouth like that it's a legal catch...it does require some skill to do it like that but come on...that just aint fishin by any means.
  20. I can't seem to get a decent report on the tailwaters at Truman. The time should be about right now for the females to be spawning. They won't be on the feed too much but the males should be looking for a meal although they also will be in a spawning mode. That friend of mine that caught a big female below powersite about 3 weeks ago said she was chunked full of eggs...would say they were staging then. From my experience the magic water temp number is right around 60 for the whites and birds...generally from about mid april to mid may depending on what mother nature dishes out as always. Drift fish some double rigged jigs, minnows, crawlers...eyes being a suspended fish once you find the right depth go for it. Only problem I've had with live bait there is trying to keep the dink cats and some of the trash fish off your line...although if you just enjoy a bend in your rod you to can be a 'Drum Meister', lol Slider generally hits Truman quite a bit...maybe he will post up some info if he has been...wouldn't mind hearing a little info myself.
  21. You're right wrench, 'Bore Gills' as I call em are right around the corner, an absolute blast to catch on any light tackle and the grandkids, well, it just don't get no better. I have a buddy where the gills and hybrid sunfish are plum thick...don't forget we are trading off trips on my little lakes and your little creek, lol. You speak of the purple blooms in the fields is the time, same as the crappie spawn starting when the dogwoods are blooming...a guy can almost bank on it. These are the type fish we all should fish for to eat, lay off the smallies, there are always plenty of pan fish for a good meal and for their size they put up one heck of a fight...'planers, their just alot of fun. Speakin of smallies, I don't know if all fisherpeople know how slow the growth rate of a smallie is...amazingly slow compared to other species. I kept some many years ago but these days it's totally against my constitution to do so. I hope people realize how slow their growth rate really is...they don't reach a foot in length for 3 to 5 years. If it's a meal you're after keep a mess of gogs, gills, greenies, heck chubs, lol...anything but a smallie. There's always something to stink a little grease with besides smallies.
  22. Just a couple of points, If everything Dablemont states is untrue why has not the MDC sued his butt off for defemation of character or some other pretense or legal bs. They don't like the accusations so it makes me wonder why they don't attempt to shut him up. Like wrench said, remaining silent...any lawyer will tell a guilty party to say nothing. That alone reeks of corruption to me, it's like they are taking the 5th on everything. If it's all unsubstaiated why do not they step up and defend themselves, just doesn't make sense. I will be curious to see if these meetings Dablemont has will shed some proof by retired or ex-employees...maybe some will produce such evidence. I suspect there are some memo's and pictures floating around out there but the ones who have them fear reprocusion at the hands of the dept. There is strength in numbers so I for one will be very curious to see how it all pans out. Time will tell...if either side is hiding anything or talking bs I hope they are put on the mat for it.
  23. I realize it's a double edged sword when it comes to dealing with things of this nature. There are always good and bad aspects of these type of agencies. I try to give credit where credit is due but will be the first to speak up when I see something wrong. The MDC has done many good things but by the same token they have their faults. I have experienced and witnessed many things that left a sour taste in my mouth concerning the MDC...proof, no I don't have any except for what I have seen which is what I base alot of my opinions on. When people see certain things I feel they have a lasting impression and often there is no proof with the exception of what each of us have seen. I guess we all have seen different things, the key word being 'different' and we base our opinions on what we have seen. I reckon some have just seen alot more than others. Due to this we all have varied opinions and I feel on ones opinions are either right or wrong and they have them for a reason. I don't judge people for their opinions...you know the old saying...everybody has one.
  24. I remember when I graduated HS gas was 32 cents a gallon, cheapest I can remember buying it for was 19 cents a gallon at a station during 'Gas Wars'...seems to be a whole different realm of gas wars going on these days...aaaaah, the good ole days.
  25. That's a dandy old cruiser...not exactly the economy model, how stained up are the seats, lol. Sure would make a good 'Fishin Rig...us old fisherman deserve a little comfort...appears she has settled a little over the years. Would be somewhat of a 'Merc Cruiser, wouldn't it ??
