It gets pressure too...it all does.

What's your jalapeno recipe? I've been experimenting lately.

Do not attempt it in a single day unless the water is moving fast. My wife and I did it three weekends ago after an isolated storm in Harrison gave the water a big bump. It was almost too high on day 1 and day 2 was getting near perfect. The water was still over the slab when we finished. In lower water, this would be a FULL day. I wouldn't want to put on any later than 6, and I'd bring lots of food and water. Need your energy carrying the canoe over gravel. It seemed like there was a pretty good gradiant in this stretch and some of the "rapids" were actually pretty challenging at the levels we floated. I was surprised.

I guess if I were making my living off of my knowledge of the lake, I'd be pissed about people following me too. But it happens. During the white bass run this year, I went canoeing with my little brother on the White/Richland confluence. It was the tail end of the run and we got skunked. However, I saw a boat with four non-english speaking guys anchored where mill creek dumps into Richland. This is no secret spot, it's an obvious feeder creek in a deep hole. As we trolled past them, all four were hooked up! I sat back and watched for a while, and these guys were jerking whites, hybrids, stripers, spots, largemouth, and cats just as fast as they could re-bait with minnows. The next day I drove over the bridge and saw the hole empty. Would I have any reservations about hitting it up? I'd have done it in a heartbeat if I was fishing that day. On my one guided freshwater trip, I went to Texoma with my uncle and a striper guide. This guy was great. We were catching 10lb stripers on 3/4oz spinnerbaits with monster trailing grubs. We got in a spot and started doubling and trippling up until another boat saw our action and rolled in. Now, this guy was obviously piggybacking us, but he wasn't exactly fishing right on top of us. Our guide flipped out and gave them an earfull. After some harsh words, they fired up their engine and floored it out of there, pretty much scattering the bait and killing our fishing. If our guide would have had a gun, I think he would have put a hole in their boat. I understood his frustration. If I'm trying to generate repeat business and making my living solely off of my own work product (which is exactly what I do in my professional life), I'd be pissed about people piggy backing off of me too.

How come my lady never says things like this? Seriously though, take her canoeing on enough of our rivers and she'll hook a big one eventually. Welcome to the board.

Sorry Bill, but you know it's part of being in the service industry. When we make our living off of our knowledge and our ability to apply it to a variety of customer's needs, it's inevitable that we're going to get asked for free advice or services. Often I'm happy to do it to a certain extent because the person I help out today may be the paying client of tomorrow - same for you and this board. Unfortunately, I guess these derby anglers are just in a hustle to get any info they can and it seems they can be a bit arrogant about it. Fortunately for you, the growing popularity of these tournaments and the sport in general translates into more prospective clients. I guess when the requests for advice get too ornerous, you can just tell them that you have to make a living too. Better yet, maybe you could create a "Bill Babler's Weekly Derby Guide" and recite the same information you post here in a newsletter and offer subscriptions to these guys!

What Is Your Idea Of A Good Fishing Show/video?
hoglaw replied to Phil Lilley's topic in General Angling Discussion
This may not be responsive, but I absolutely loved "Ozark Outdoors." I can't remember the two guy's names who did most of the shows, one was called "Crow" and I can't remember the other. Anyhow, they had a noodling show, a limblining show, a bowfishing show....my kind of guys. Never could figure out where they were...I assumed north central Arkansas somewhere but I really don't know. -
Understatement of the year.

PM WhackyWorm on this board. He runs an outfit down there and would be happy to put you on fish wherever you want to go.

I'm not sure why it's that way, but I know that only a few operators hold licenses to do the Buffalo now. They have to get them from the feds, and it's created an oligopoly. I don't know how expensive each boat license is or whether they have to pass on money from shuttles to the feds, but I do know that they can't even shuttle a private boat without one of the licenses. In the future if you're going on a busy weekend, just do your float and find someone at the takeout that's willing to drive you back to your vehicle for a few bucks. I've paid a case of beer and a pack of cigarettes for a shuttle on crooked before!

On the cost savings deal, I thought they moved to Ouachita because there was another tournament in the area around the same time frame. Maybe on Hamilton or DeGray? I guess it's two birds with one stone.

I fish/float it a lot. It's not likely to be floatable in October unless we get a fair bit of rain. Used to be that hardly anyone floated it, but there's an outfitter operating below the highway 45 bridge now. I imagine he's taking people out at gar hole, but they may be doing takeouts at the Mill too.

I believe Russ a/k/a Whacky Worm fishes the hell out of them on the Elk with great success. I tied one on on my last creek trip when the fish were hunkered down and I didn't get a look.

Little bump to this old thread. I'm not very tech savy, so the picture isn't very good quality and I have no idea what it will look like on here once I attach it. Anyway, I caught this fish on a zoom horney toad in about eighteen inches of muddy water at the bar meeting in Hot Springs earlier this summer. Not sure about measurements, but it weighed 10lb 8oz on the digital scale. Took a LONG time to revive it after the photo session and me trying to figure out how to take a picture with my phone, but it swam off eventually.

Dano: I'm sure I'll get some of this wrong...I'm not an engineer. This is my understanding of how things work though: As I understand it, no generation can take place at "minimum flow." The thing about producing electricity is that it isn't stored anywhere. It's generated at the same rate that it's used and it travels through the grid at the speed of light(ish). In order to ramp up a generator, they have to get the thing spinning fast enough to produce electricity at 120hz. That means they can't just let it spin a little. It's either engaged, or it isn't. I think it even takes an electrical load to produce, so if you're not producing properly, you're wasting power rather than supplying it. The generators come on during peak demand because the regional grid gets close to capacity. Once all the nuke's and coal capacity is being used, these other intermitent generators come online to increase the capacity in the grid. Now, what happens when you're generating 100 megawatts but only using 90 is way beyond me and probably advanced physics. I just know these things kick on to decrease strain on the grid, and therefore they get top dollar for the electricity they produce since it's peak-demand emergency power. Mimimum flow means that whenever they're not generating, they're losing generation potential because water is being let out. So anyway, who gets the money that the rate payers pay for BSD's electricity?
-
The problem is that to really understand what's going on here, you have to have a fairly in depth understanding of the way the regional power grid works...which I don't. I mean, if Bull is releasing water constantly at a minimum flow, it's not rocket science to know that less water is available for peak demand generation. If that's the case, that means that the grid has to purchase the same power from elsewhere at a higher rate, right? Well, who receives the revenue from operation of the BSD in the first place? Who actually owns the dam? If it's the COE, and they're subsidizing the trout fishery at the expense of neighboring states in the power pool, I guess they have a legitimate beef, but Arkansas users who don't benefit directly from the white river's economic impact are sharing the load too.

For some reason I thought it was illegal to sell sculpins, but I suppose if they're imported through a distributor maybe it's okay? I've always caught my own and I've never needed more than two or three.

bummer. I sent dano a PM about this, but has anyone seen the water at crooked in the last 24 hours? Looks like it got a huge shot of rainwater that appears to be droppingn out. By the time I get there for this weekend's float, I'm thinking it's still going to be just over the slab. Does that mean muddy water or will it clear up some?

I was looking for some info that was in this thread a while back. The main page says it has ten posts (eleven counting mine now), but I only see three ending with rubicon31's post. What's going on here?

Carp And Suckers - Will They Take Flies?
hoglaw replied to hoglaw's topic in Carp, the Other White Meat
Humm, thought I posted this a few minutes ago, but it appears not to have worked. Zhoyt - any particular links to favorites? I've found some information that looks good, but no official Whitlock pages or anything. Terry - what kind of furry green flies are you talking about? Big maribou streamers or buggers? -
I've done some site fishing for golf course carp before with crawfish patterns, but I'm thinking about heading out to the Buffalo this weekend and wouldn't mind casting for a few since I always see so many. Do any of you guys regularly fish our moving waters for carp and/or suckers? My local fly shop reccommends egg patterns - anyone have any alternative suggestions for hooking into a few of these big guys?

I'm going to take my wife (as of two months ago!) camping and floating this coming weekend. Temps should be down and it looks like there's a possibility of rain, but I would imagine we're still dealing with low water. With that in mind, it seems like a 12 or 14 miler on the Buffalo would be an ideal overnight trip. We don't have time to go from Rush down, and I'd like her to want to continue being married to me after we finish this trip. We'd be putting in on Saturday morning and taking out Sunday evening. I've done most of the Buffalo, but I normally go during the week days so crowds aren't really part of the equation. Does anyone have a suggestion for a float that length that might keep some of the bigger crowds away with the low water? Bobber, what do you think?
-
By all means, have your friend get Chief's boat. Not trying to compete here. Just wanted to let everyone know that if they wanted to pick one of these up for a song in fixer-up condition, it's available in Fayetteville. My wife would thank you dearly for coming to get it.

New Fly Reel...having Trouble
hoglaw replied to On The Fly 6's topic in Tips & Tricks, Boat Help and Product Review
You shouldn't have to take it apart. If I understand your issue correctly, the drag is too loose. There should be an external drag adjustment, though I'm not familiar with that particular model. Is there an external drag knob? -
I've got one too if anyone else knows of someone looking for one. Mine is what you would call "a project." One of the pontoons split a little which I didn't notice until I put it in the water about a year ago. I had to drag the heavy thing uphill to let it drain out. I sanded and epoxied the leak with fiberglass strips, but I haven't put it in the water since. If anyone wants to give the leak a shot, this boat is CHEAP.
