Well remember I'm doing this with a flyrod. The jigs (flies) that I am using hardly weigh anything. Most of the time I just use a larger strike indicator. Sometimes I'll use a foam popper. You can use a hair jig, fly or anything else that you want to drift around in the current. The placement of the float depends on you or where you would like the lure to be. You can adjust it for various water depths or at depths where you know the fish are holding. I very seldom move mine when river fishing, just let the current carry it along.

Springfield Lake is listed as 206 acres. So yeah, 2300 is a pretty big lake.

I rarely use a tube for smallmouths anymore. But they do catch fish. The most success I have had, especially when the fish are sluggish, is fishing them carolina rigged. Now this can be done with a bullet weight to keep it down or something as simple as just enough split shot to keep it just on the bottom. Dragging this out of some fast water into some slack water can really trigger a strike, but most times it will be a really light take. And you need to be slow in your presentation in really cold water. Fishing a jig and float style rig has done pretty well in the past too. I am mainly using this with a fly rod but it was originally designed for conventional tackle. I use various jigs and flies with a small strike indicator (bobber) several feet above to detect the strike. To me this is a better way of producing a strike when things get really tough. Plus if you get it in the right water, like a big eddy, you don't have to make as many casts. You can let it sit there and float around and around in that eddy forever. If you are going to fish cold water you have to have patience and make slow presentations. But moving into the really cold water we are going to go through a period that should produce some great fishing. Yeah I know what others have said about fall fishing. Don't worrty about that too much. Those fish are there and they are going to feed. There will be days that the fishing is horrible and you will start to believe what they say, but there will be other days that dreams are made of. And leaves or no leaves, don't forget to throw a good crankbait no matter how cold the water is. Sometimes that's all they want.

Well if they leave it up to City Utilities in Springfield we are all screwed. It just makes no sense to me for another reservoir to be created to supply Springfield, especially one that requires pumping water, their track record isn't so good with that type of thing. It also doesn't make much sense to create a reservoir to pump water from the James to fill. Couldn't they just use Springfield lake for that?

Wrench, it seems like the same thing happened at Pomme de Terre. 15 to 20 years ago there was a lot of vegetation then gradually most if not all of it disappeared. I use to love fishing that stuff. I would have liked to fish LOZ when there was grass in it. I wonder what caused all that stuff to die off?

Too late Chief... Anywayi I'm done with those. I would like to see that article. That's what I've always been told, is that the fish were released from trains. I also don't see what value it would bring in building it there and pumping the water to Springfield (if that's where it's going). They built the pipeline from Stockton to Fellows lake but I have rarely seen it in use. Of course they have had nothing but problems with it as well. I'm not sure if it's even functioning right now. To me the trout aren't the biggest issue, it's the daming of another stream. There are plenty of other lakes to take the water from.

When they made the change to the site I tried to get on and had lost my password. I went through the password reset process and waited patiently for the reset email. After about a week I gave up and re-signed up. It took several days to get the new membership approved, but it did eventually happen. Just be patient and it will happen. Hopefully Al can get you going a little sooner. Still haven't seen an email on resetting my password for the old account.
