Glad to have you on here and looking forward to seeing you participate in the forums. Sounds like a nice place you will have there on Crooked Creek.

I did not know they were bottom feeders eating only vegitation? I always thought they were filter feeders eating such things as zoo plankton just as whales feed.

That is a deal that cant be beat!
A 7 wt rod should be fine. I will have a 10 ft 7wt as my main rod up there this year. I think a few guys in our group on the Sept trip used 5 and 6 wts.

I do not think it would be too dangerous. You may have to go way up to find moving water and I dont know what the colder temps will do to the fish. Should be easier to launch your boat at the campground entrance now.

They are being hit on the James River below Springfield Lake right now. Only takes about an hour to get your limit. 25 to 35 pound males are the average. Take your waders and get out in the middle. Cast towards the back side of the pilons.

OK,
Here's what we've all been waiting for.....Michael in action!
As Julius Cesar said, "Vinni, viddi, vicci."
No stories of fish, just the fish telling the story.

If the Missouri is up you can snag at Howell Island there in Gumbo Flats (Chesterfield Valley) There is a low water bridge that goes to the island and if the water is rolling over that then usually the spoonies are there. Winfield lock and dam is another place to get them but need a boat there. Usually Alton is better latter in the season around the 3rd week of April.
I have pulled many 40-60 pounders from there in the past.

Had to go to Tulsa today so I brought along my fly rod just in case there was no water running. The water was off and I was able to fish for about 1 and 1/2 hours. No takes on the clouser from stripers or whites but did get into 2 spoonbill. The first one went about 60 lbs and the second was about 50.
They both were released quickly.
After hitting and fighting two of these in a row on the fly rod, I decided this was too much like work and headed home.
