Is There Any Link For James A. Reed?
shaker replied to troutfiend1985's topic in General Angling Discussion
Snagged, a few years ago I had read that Mdc had netted and released a hybrid that would be a state record if someone had caught it. But thay didn't say which lake it was in can't say if thats right or not but should get your blood stirred up, God luck! -
Is There Any Link For James A. Reed?

Dave thank you for the info, I'll give it a shot soon as the ice goes out. That might be a while the way the weather forecast looks. As for a forum I don't have any ideal how it would work, I know that there is very little said on the Truman forum, wish there was more. I know that I could post more than I do, I fish there from early spring to winter usually, just don't think about posting any info about it. So if you see someone wondering around that looks like they don't know what they are doing it'll probably be me. Thanks again. -
Is There Any Link For James A. Reed?

Dave, do you fly fish for crappie at Reed? I have never fished there but don't live far away, Pleasant Hill, and swing by there now and then just looking. Most of the lakes look like they would be pretty easy to walk around and fly fish but is on the "To Do" list. Thanks. -
If you have already cast some I would suggest buying a mold and hooks of choice and make your own. I started doing this years ago fishing for hybrids cause nobody made a suitable jig with a good enough hook to hold these fish. Now I cast all my own jigs mostly crappie, white bass, hybrids and walleye stuff. Plus it's fun at least to me to catch fish on things that I make myself. I find it somewhat amusing to have someone ask me where did you get that jig at? I made it! Would you sell any of those? Nope! Barlowstackle.com is a good place to look for supplies.

Didn't know if you knew about the upper end of Truman but you can fish from the bank on the upper Osage and the Marais des Cygnes.
-
Been waiting for someone to reply on this, I fish up and down the area some by boat and don't think that there is much access if any from the bank in the area that you are asking about You could fish from the bank along Drake Harbor and I have see a few people fish from the bank south of Drake Harbor where the river makes a sharp bend back to the East There use to be a road cross the river there years ago probably before LOZ was built, its a great spot a big eddy forms there when the Corps is running water. It would probably involve a walk of a 1/4 to 1/2 mile? Good Luck!

Don't how far you want to travel but there are some areas on the South side of the Grand arm that can be reached from Z highway where a small boat can be used and some great fishing be had, unload boat and start fishing. Otter creek is one and Finney creek another. Where 82 crosses Weaubleau creek is another, any of these places can become windy just depends on which way the wind decides to blow. As for camping out if you are not in a designated camping area the corps can write you a ticket and I wouldn't leave anything laying around cause it probably won't be there when you get back. Good Luck!

That access is really way up the Pomme river close to Hermitage, no lake water there unless the lake is way high. You might like the area west of Fristoe better, go west on CC until you get to the lake, haven't been there for a while but you use to be able to put in on a major cove, well protected with good fishing, great fishing for crappie in the spring. Actually if you get some good lake maps and do some exploring there are lots of places on Truman where you could put a small boat in and have some very good fishing. Just look for old roads that head toward the lake, you might want to check some of these out before you take the boat and gear some are useable and some aren't. Good Luck!

I was there today early afternoon checked out below the dam and not much happening. The corps is running some water through the power house, went up on top and unloaded the boat and fished the weir and hit some points around the lower lake and not much happening there either. Did manage to catch a few small whites. Water temps were about 60 to 61 if the corps will ever open the flood gates and pull some serious water the fishing would get better I hope!
-
Don't think so, the day I was there the Osage had a lot more trash than the Grand arm did, they had a lot more rain over that way. Still got to be carefull keep a close watch ahead never know when a floater is lurking out there especially now that the corps is pulling some water.
-
Lake is 9' high and falling, upper end very muddy and lots of trash, lower end clearer but starting to muddy up, you'll probably be dealing with lake current. Probably be back down Tuesday or Webnesday and post a new report.
-
The corps has been running water through the generators about 30.000 according to their web site and will through the weekend if you can believe them. I haven't been down but a friend was there Wednesday and did catch some white cat on fresh shad, didn't see any whites or hybrids caught.
-
I would like to know myself as I haven't been down that way for a while. But I don't think much is happening yet, the corps has not been running much water lately. I think that the water is plenty warm yet too, the lake is about a foot high with heavy rains predicted in the next couple of days then a serious cold front following that if you can believe the weather guessers, maybe that will get things fired up!

Something that I like to do with spinnerbaits is to push the trailer hook into a 2" to 2 1/2" hollow tube bait and then thread that onto the main hook of the spinnerbait. You can come up with some intersting colors that way and plus it tends to cover the trailer hook. If I'm using a pretty much white spinner I will sometimes use a blue tube with a chartreuse tail, one of my favorites, the sky is the limit on combo's that can be used. Works for me anyway.

That's about what the dealer told me "If you want a high preformance boat you should have bought a high preformance boat"

Thank you fishingwrench, thats more info than I have seen in two years of asking. I think that I will try moving the batteries and charger back this winter and work on this some more. I have been up and down with the motor, I am maxed out with horsepower and pitch right now I am running a 18' aluminum boat with a 10* hull, 90HP E-TEC with a 18" stainless prop turning 5000 rpm runs 40mph, handling is less than desireable. One thing I wonder about this is a heavy boat (1200# hull) for aluminum and very wide 90" beam does this come into play? Again thanks very much the help is appreciated.

Thanks for the report, I put in at Long Shoal and fished back to the West Friday. Mostly looking for white and hybrids, didn't find any so broke out the crappie gear and pulled in 10 nice ones in the G-16 area. Most of mine came on a blue and white tube 8' to 10' down in 15' to 20' FOW. Some on flats and some in creeks, saw more shad in the creeks than the flats.

VIP I had hoped that you would get some replys on this. I have same issues with a 18' aluminum boat with a 90 E-TEC, couldn't get any help from the dealer. Finally moved the trolling motor batteries to the front of the boat along with everything else that I could get there, tackle boxes and cooler. This helped somewhat but didn't totally fix the problem. I finally called the manufacture and talked to a teck, he said to bend the trim tabs down at the back of the boat, which I had already done then he said bend them some more, which I did now they are bent down at a almost 90* angle, which helped a bit more. I called back and ask about adding a jack plate, he told me "DO NOT PUT A JACK PLATE" on that boat. Wouldn't give me a reason why, I suspeck that they had never tested that setup with a jack plate and didn't want any liability issues, just my guess. I don't see where a jack plate could do anything but help, but don't know, I have ask the same questions on several forums and ask a number of people the same and have never gotten any answer, I hope you find a solution to your problem if you do I would appreciate hearing how you fixed it. Good Luck!

I don't fish the LOZ but on Truman I've had pretty good luck with large swimming minnows on 1/4 oz jigs and 3 to 4 inch swim baits rigged on 1/4,3/8 and 1/2 oz jig heads. Favorite colors are a yellow chartreuse head with a white body, sometimes dip the tail in chartreuse dye, on dark days all chartreuse is hard to beat.

Don't know if you would consisder West-central mo. but the Sac river has a lot of the things you are looking at plus some pigs! I would look at starting at Caplinger and go north there are several roads that cross the river here and there, not much access other than that. It would be a put in and take out on your own as I don't think that there are any outfitters that work the river.

Sam have you tried the Vibric RoosterTail? It has a inline blade with a offset body that resists line twist, and blade spins very easy. I like your idea looks like a good one!
-
Like Bill B. says you really need some running water. As far as lures go in my experience simply take everything you have. Top water (spook), jerk baits, jigs from 1/16 oz to 3/4 oz. Swim tails, thumper tails, tubes, mainly chartruese and white, red and chartreuse crappie jigs work well for crappie. I have some friends that swear Gulp is the way to go for eyes.

I haven't been below the dam for a while but for me I like it best when the corps is running lots of water which they have not been doing. So my vote would be fish the lake, with the temps. that we have been having lately all of the fishing should really pick up (I hope) it's been somewhat spotty in the last few weeks. Good luck!
