I didn't realize you could only bring along one or the other.. Pistol for protection (though shooting snakes is more target practice than protection) and a cell for communication..

But I'd rather be dragging myself to the top of a ridge with my cell phone than sitting on a rock by the stream firing my pistol every so often and hoping someone comes toward the gunshots to investigate... But that's just me... And of course not all emergencies are created equal..

And, in the case of an emergency, the top of the ridge holds the prospect of reception... Good point...

The poll does assume that you do carry a phone on you when out in the wilderness, if for no other reason than having some option for communication in emergency situations even if there may be no obvious cell reception in the area (no reception at the access or fishing hole) The poll also assumes you own a cell phone. ____________ Okay, so the topic here is much broader than the poll.. Sparked by a thread where a few folks have indicated that having your phone on/using your phone "midstream" is some type of breach of etiquette... For my part, I'll wholeheartedly agree that some clown upstream from me taking loudly (whether in a cell phone or not) is annoying... I'll also readily admit that I usually ignore "unimportant" phone calls while I'm fishing and I tend to keep my ringer on vibrate while in the trout park.. Otherwise, I'm a total tech-addict... The last time I went floating with Wrench I played Scrabble against my wife during our lunch break! lol Granted, I have the phone with all the other stuff (camera, video camera,games, GPS with maps, loan calculators, links to my website and inventory, email, and I can even post a lunker video to YouTube or facebook).... But even if I didn't have this phone or this job, I'd still have a basic phone for emergencies.. Wouldn't you?

What a maroon! I work on a commission basis, bub... My livelihood can't be compressed into a 9-5. I was standing underneath the bridge in zone 2 just this past year and answered a call cause I didn't recognize the number off hand.. (I do keep my phone on vibrate). It was Delores M, a little old lady who lives all by herself.. She had left her key in her ignition (for two weeks, lol) and ran her battery down.. She didn't know who else to call, and she had accidentally called my cell phone Instead of the business number.. She happens to live next to Bennett so I just packed up and went on over.. Turns out her late husband has a trickle charger (Danged good one too!), so I just put it on a charger and hung out with her for a while.. (actually fixed a few things around the house, but that's a different tale) Long and short is that professional Customer Service Reps like me are ALWAYS on duty.. Now that's what I'm tawkin 'bout brotha!!! Good job man! (BTW what the heck is it that you do that makes you that much commission on 3 deals? Nevermind, I may not wanna know.. )
