i fished elk river sunday afternoon. water was muddy, and ranged between 49 at the mouth, and 53 up river under the bridge. i only fished a couple hours, and i tried a jig, and crankbait. i fished a couple spots that are historically pretty good this time of year, and didn't catch anything. our club had a tourney on saturday...i couldn't fish it, but from what i heard i didn't miss much. only 4 guys caught keepers (6lbs or so won) but one guy said they caught quite a few short fish on a jig around wood. another buddy put-in at honey creek, and was so fed up with the water color that he loaded up his boat and went to eucha...said he caught 7 or 8 on a clown jerk bait in rattlesnake fishing it with long pauses, and short movements. if you guys have never been to eucha you ought to try it...neat little lake. on a positive note...the new boat ran good!

i spent about 4 hours opening day with my fly rod. The water at RR was high, and off-color, so I mostly fished a beadhead wooly under an indicator. i also tried a glo-ball, and various other micro-jigs. I struggled and only hooked one fish on the fly rod. I think i was trying to cast too far. i may have had better luck in a smaller stretch of water and just drift thru the same 10 or 15 feet of water. it was pretty windy, so detecting a bite...if there ever was one was difficult. When i got out a lot of line...the indicator would drag, and i had a hard time lifting it out of the water to roll cast. I have a 8' 5wgt st croix rod, and i found that i could cast a small unweighted wooly bugger without an indicator best. downwind of course. what caused my forearm to hurt...it's the muscle on the side of my elbow, and top of my forearm??? what indicator do you recommend??? i was using a pinch-on foam type, and after a while it would water log, and be difficult to cast...it would also sink at the end of the drift. What fly line would you recommend for a beginner?? any tips will be appreciated...thanks

this is joe and i at RR -- i'd cast out a little green worm and he'd reel it in...they liked his herky jerky style of reeling. biggest fish of the trip. this is his older brother at beaver this past fall...we went with beaver fever guide (dan andreason) -- good guide...one thing i'll say is the rods are too large for little kids, so not as much fun for kids. But this one might be my favorite!!!

Thanks, i plan to come down sunday and try that exact stretch of water. I for one am glad to know that even good fishermen like yourself are having trouble...i mean -- don't get me wrong i wish you luck and all but it's nice to read a report that is this informative and isn't embellished. we'll probably put-in at eagle rock and fish RR and Panther Creek. thanks

i took the new boat, the wife and both boys to twin bridges today. we ran up the neosho first and tried them for about thiry minutes where the bluff ends, but we didn't catch anything. then we switched, and went to the spring. we ran down to the first boat dock on the right and saw a handful of boats on the left hand side a little further down. so we got upwind from them and drifted toward them we just drifted down the flat. my oldest son had one, but it got off. my wife wanted a change so we went up by the bridge and fished the riprap. my wife and boys fished with worms and didn't catch anything. i caught one dink bass on a black and blue jig. not the greatest fishing story, but there is something to be said for spending the day with the family. go giants

haven't been but i'm going somewhere saturday. have you heard any reports from swepco?

you're right but i was fishing too, and i had thrown mine back. we only had four between us. the finer points of the law are somewhat lost on five year olds. i was just happy that he agreed to throw one back, and that the one he chose to throw back was the largest. no worries

My 5 year old son and i came down early saturday morning for a little fishing. we drifted along the bluff directly across from Lilleys, and he caught his limit within an hour and a half. i picked up a couple myself on an olive jig. he had a lot of bites, but quite a few spit the worm before he could get them to the boat. When he caught his fifth i told him he was over his limit, and i asked him which one he wanted to release. he said the big one. it was great. we left the fish in the livewell on the way home, and we put them in our landscape pond when we got home. He played with them all day yesterday too. the best action was down just a little from lilleys' across from the boat ramp at cooper where the channel swings to the other bank.

i stopped past yesterday afternoon just to look at the damage, and everything looked good. the river was back to a normal level, and the water looked good. the gate was locked to get to the mill and the dam, but from a distance everything appeared to be normal. there's a lot of debris in the fence but that's about it.

mine doesn't have mapping, and like dutch said...it is worthless.

i'd say -- save your money. i got a garmin for my birthday a couple years ago, and i've never used it. no offense

Free Boat Show In Joplin This Weekend
wily replied to focused fishing's topic in General Angling Discussion
it's this coming weekend...january 4 - 6. not sure about times on friday, but saturday and sunday it's usually 8 - 5. the pro's put on hour long seminars...lots of good information. in years past lots of the top area pros are there. jackie davis, barker, dion hibdon, just to name a few. each pro will pick a bait/technique on a specific lake and talk about it. at the end of each segment or really anytime you can ask questions. last year tim hughes...custom painting guy was there...our local southtown sporting goods had a booth with some awesome specials. -
I mostly fish the mid-lake, from shangri-la/honey creek area to the elk river, but sometimes i'll go down by the dam...i never fish above elk river. i just don't feel comfortable up there. a spinnerbait in the very back of honey creek is great early in the year... jerk baits work good early around the terra miranda point. a small crank bait around the rip rap at shangri-la...shad rap is what i like. cast an eakins jig in front of, and around the boat docks. a friend of mine swears by wolf creek. really there isn't a wrong way to fish it...do what your comfortable with. it's a good lake.

try war eagle marina they may have a slip, but you might have to keep your boat on the trailer at night. stay in springdale, and you can put in at hickory creek or war eagle. http://www.swl.usace.army.mil/parks/beaver...oebeavermap.pdf a buddy of mine caught some crappie a couple weeks ago further up the river around blue springs. if your dead set on having a slip...prairie creek in rogers is probably the only one large enough to allow it.

Wow! what were you using? i've heard of two in one shot -- but four?? -------------------------- oh, you're talking about fish? -- sorry about your luck!

my 5 year old and i got a doe about 6:30 saturday morning. it was a good thing she came along when she did because we might not have made it much longer. good times

We just got back from 4 days at beaver. We stayed at spider creek resort in a great cabin overlooking the white river. my oldest boy(5) caught at least 50 trout in our 4 days, and his little brother caught the largest. i also took my boat, so we'd trailer it to beaver lake. the boys like to bluegill fish. i'd find some chunk rocks and they'd throw worms under a bobber and they had lots of action. i'd be in the front of the boat, throwing either a tube, or a c-rig...i caught quite a few smallmouth, and a couple ky's considering the number of casts that i made. one morning we went with Don from Beaver Fever striper guides and he put us on the fish, they were blowing up all around us. we fished around the island by rocky branch, and in the back of Rambo creek. beaver lake is undeveloped compared to branson, and spider creek is an excellent place to stay. this sounds more like a plug for spider creek than an actual fishing report...but if you're looking for a place to vacation...beaver has it all!

October 10, 2007 Stockton Lake Fishing Report
wily replied to Thompson Fishing Guide Service's topic in Stockton Lake
hey quillback...head east. the landmarks you mention are on grand lake in oklahoma -
http://www.joplinglobe.com/local/local_story_212123220.html Please see the link above...I hate to be pessimistic but it appears the water quality will take another hit in the name of profit. thanks

i think i'd keep moving, and troll the live bait. i'd concentrate my efforts around point 5. fish all around and across from point 5, and also go up into big clifty. troll the live shad under a balloon, or with your downriggers at a couple different depths. have one guy watch the bait, and the other cast redfins, or big shallow-diving crankbaits. i'd look for gravel w/ deep water close-by, rather than the bluffs during the night. please let us know how you do, and what you find to be successful because i plan to go down on the 28th. thanks

i'm sorry, i'm a bonehead...i didn't put two and two together. i'd try just down from FC boat dock, about 150 yards or so, there's a place you'll see that flattens out...looks almost like a place where there might have been rapids before...kind of a flat spot of grass. you can't miss it. it's always been a good spot for us. i'm sure you could wade and fish in that area, but it will be a tough 150 yard walk because it's on the bluff side.
