Well I guess that I missed the subject about FC catching the brook trout. I would say congrats Fc. As for a record, I would have to disagree, when the state allows state records to come from private ponds not open for public fishing. I would consider FC's fish to be a new record caught in fair chase. If I recall corectly, the previous brook trout came from a private stream north of columbia. A belated congrats to the Fishin Cricket, and we would like to hear from you again.

Beware of what u buy, espesically on line. Most are tied in the glo bug, round and tight, with very little hook gap. A not so good quality hook. Usually a heavy wire, slightly offset that is tailor made to loss big fish. If you tie your own, go with the fur bug style, a good wide gap hook like a 2487 with light wire. Use light tippet, such as 6 and 5 x. Most people are parinoid to tackle a big fish on light tippet. It is a walk in the park for you and the fish.

Agreed, presentation is way better than color or appearance. Original eggs were fur bugs. The egg was created when someone trimmed up the fur bug. Concentrate on keeping it on the bottom and you will catch fish.

Thanks everyone, I am on the mend and hope to be catching a few crappie by the end of next week. trout fishing and wading are a few more weeks down the road.

Good report Duane, glad you and DD had an entertaining day. I too spent most of the day at the lake. Of course that was at LOZ. Didnt fish, but after 40 days of laying in a hospital bed. I needed a break. Been home about a week now doing rehab. I sat on the patio by the lake, drank coffee, and watched the wildlife go by. Truly great to be in the fresh air again.

Hi 10 pointer. Myself and a few others on this forum have known him for 40 years. Same ole ts, nothing changes. Although he is a bit more creative than before. In the early days, he would just snag the fish that were in the creek on derby day. Has even been known to try to weigh in the same fish more than once over the course of the day. A couple of big bell sinkers can change the weight just enough to make the judge scratch his head and wonder.Here is something that I heard from Jeff Tief on thursday. Talking with his buddy at the park store, he was told that ts got off on a technicality Apparently, no where in the derby regs, does it say that the fish you weigh in, have to be caught at montauk. Not sure that they can even ban him from the park. You all can do what we did at bssp, you can discourge his presence. Forget I said that, that paints a terrible picture for trout fishermen. Best bet would be just to ignore and not attract any attention to him. I think he thrives on attention, good or bad.

Some areas of the trout parks require a single point hook, but nothing on barbless.

I am sure this tactic works in alot of places, but like wrench says, not so much at loz. Our shad are everywhere and the birds are everywhere as well. Plus the fact, we do not have seagull year round. Although they came early this year, in september. Normally they arrive in october and stay through early april. I am out on the dock alot, and I have never witnessed fish, birds, and shad in the same place, at the same time. I know what you all are talking about, because I see it on those offshore fishing shows. F and F said you had to follow the right birds, which means they must have pelicans or something else as well. And judging from some of Fand F striper reports, I would say it works very well for him indeed.

I dont worry about turnover because I cant cast anyway. I start with 5 feet of 4x tied to 5 feet of 5x tied to 5 feet of 7x. I fish in close and rarely have the fly line touching the water.

Heard a name and heard a story. The name I have heard several times in the past, the story, well, goes with the name. Here's what I heard. A certain individual, lets just call him TS wo we can put a name on the story. TS heads out to rockbridge to catch him some big ole derby fish. Catches about a 150 dollar stringer and heads back to montauk just in time for derby day. As the story goes, no one is for certain when the fish were caught, but they are certain that one was very cold and still in defrost mode. When hatchery personell arrived, they notice something strange about these fish. they are of the emerson strain of rainbow unlike the arlee strain that mdc raises and releases. Now lets just say that TS lives in st louis and just for grins lets call him a retired electrician. Got to keep the story going. He makes a round trip from slt to rockbridge, and then back to montauk on derby day. What do you think, a hundred bucks in gas? Pays 150 bucks for a stringer of hybrid trout that wont thaw quick enough to make the derby weigh in.Not sure if he was looking for fame and glory, or just the hundred dollar prize money. I think it surely has to be impossible to make up a story this good.

Heard through the grapevine, that maybe some underhanded dealings went on at this years rose holland derby. Maybe reed tackle cant fill us in on the double dealing. What have you heard Idlewilde?

Hi Phil, its Rick. cruise control is part of that tension drift that FW was talking about in another topic. I use a downstream walk the dog method. Bungee jumpers, you are right on, across the creek one minute and then right back where they started from, only to head off again. Lights on all the time like a christmas parade. Come on up and join us some evening.

Made one of my spur of the moment night trips to taney. Got there about 5, fished till 11 and bailed out. Did not land any big fish, but ran into some old friends and got to fish with them for awhile. Catching was good and somewhat on the small side. I fished sow bugs on cruise control and they fished streamer flies. Lots of doubles and lots of fish, but average to small. JJ and Chuck bailed out about 9:30, and I continued to fish until a group of bungee jumpers showed up. With red and green lights they looked a christmas parade on the water. Never a dull moment this time of the year.

It is a rather simple approach. You need to get your bait just slightly heavier than the current. I use split shot and adjust it up and down to fine tune. A long leader and tippet combo helps also. I normally use 12 to 15 feet. Your fly line will have a slight arc downstream like when you fish a streamer fly. Your fly will tick along the bottom and you feel everything. At night I prefer the straight down method that fw spoke of. You walk the fly slower than the current is moving. This method I call cruise control because you can speed up or slow way down and still maintain contact with the fly and the big fish that is about to inhale it. Of course a thingamawhacher is probably easier, but its all in what you prefer.
