For you guys wanting to fish bait on taney. Does anyone remember the white river bait rig? Take a medium size crawdad tail and strip it down to the white meat. Using a # 6 long shank, thread on a large worm in a figure 8 and push it to the eye of the hook, thread the crawdad tail lengthwise, and then add another figure 8 worm to the back. A go to rig that the white river guides used several years back for large browns.
Hi Brian, skeeters were out in force again last night, as good as I sprayed up, I still got bit a few times. The big female was in great shape, she made four 30 to 50 foot runs and did a full body jump at the end of each one. All of the fish fought hard last night, they should be in good shape for fall o2 levels.
Started fishing at dark last night with about 4 holdovers from the day crowd. They bailed out by 9:30 or so, and I had the whole creek to myself until around 11:30. Its saturday night and no crowd, a rare event for even summer time. 5 guys rolled in between 11:30 and midnight. They were all polite and courteous and everyone had good water to fish. The fish were really active last night and I caught several good quality fish between 2 and 2.5 lbs. I am sure the other guys were catching them as well, because I saw several headlamps go on and off. Ended the night about 2 am with several fish and 2 lunker rainbow, a 3.5 lber and a really nice looking and healthy female close to 6 lb. A great night to be on the water for sure.
Thanks Kdan, I certainly miss not seeing you on the creek these days. You and I have had our fair share of discourteous anglers. I decided several years back to not let them ruin my day on the creek. And to admire and acknowledge good courtesy when I encounter it. I'm sure with the crowds these days that most new anglers are overwhelmed with it all. Come on down and night fish with me this summer, we can escape the crowds until september. Good to hear from you again.
You are too kind my good friend, thank you. Don't think I will be jumping into broadcasting just yet. LOL. My thanks also to Rod holder{steve} for taking the time and effort to produce these trout bum podcasts. Mo and Ark have many fine trout anglers, and I look forward to hearing many more future trout bum podcasts. There is a story to Jeff's mention of Wisconcin. He had invited me to go along to raccine for a few days and I had to decline. Instead I went to taney that night, and the following morning was when I caught the big brown.
22 horns? What the heck is going on? Er, I mean, yeah I heard them Brian. Saw them guys parachuting into the parking lot as well. maybe you should just stay home today and take a rest there budddy.
Howdy Wayne. Back in the 80's I caught a 6lber at montauk that matched the description of a redband. And when we asked about it, we were told that they were experimenting with a few for possible future stockings. A beautiful fish with that huge red band like you describe. I am not sure what the outcome of that experiment was.
You are right Brian, and last season was terrific, one of the best rainbow years since late 90's. But big brown population has been way off since 07. This year will have to steadily improve just to be an average season.
An update from 2 weeks ago. On my previous trip from rebar to outlet 2, the gravel was as clean as if you had just dumped it out of a truck. Today, it is starting to get some color to it with small patches of moss growing. I caught more fish last night with a nice 5lb rainbow to top the list. After daylight, I walked that same stretch of water and found several fish holding. Still not the numbers that should be there, but a big impovement.
We had an overpopulation last year. Had to smoke a few out of the garden as well. I discovered that crows and buzzards really like "lead smoked" squirrel.
Yep, my congrats as well. I totally agree with Gavin's comment. Young anglers keep fish and for sure they are going to keep their first one or two or ten lunker fish. I kept my first five lunker fish, and have kept a total of 27 lunkers in my lifetime. If the young man caught those fish in fair chase, then he has every right to be proud of his catch.
Wow! A magnificent rainbow for sure, my congrats to Aaron. I know only of a 15lber that was officially weighed in years back. Hopefully it is a record for him.
Howdy BRian, we may be looking at our poorest year of night fishing since early 80's. That is from the rebar up. I walked the featureless terrian last week. Started at rebar, and counted 5 fish between there and outlet 2. At oulet 2, I counted exactly 3 fish in the run. The flood gates and the track hoes have taken their toll on the upper water.
