Exactly what i was thinking. Best to not cast downstream within this sacred section of the creek. Flag that I did not hook any monsters near this spot. Best to just make no eye contact and cut the line. Glad i did so.

My brother is very law abiding; what could possibly go cattywampus ?

I've been thinking that I know a little bit about trout hunting this time of year. What do you think is the best canoe/kayak River/creek segment in the Ozarks for a fun day of smallmouth bass.

One of us knows the story behind this beautiful work. I believe it was erected between 7/16 and 7/21 and have several theories, but would like to hear everyone's guesses. 1) Warning, Downstream RootWad Obstructions 2) Monument to the Crane Creek Snakes 3) Stand here, drift to there (my leading favorite)

Anyone fishing this week ? Looking for advice.

Thanks for the current status ! Will be watching for any updates in River or fishing conditions.

Hey Jordan, Spinners are fine, but there may be certain Zones that restrict to a single hook, rather than a treble hook. I haven't seen this explicitly written for you, so will offer my two cents. If you guys have not done a lot of trout fishing, it would be well worth your while to stop by Tim's fly shop on your way into the park. Tim's place is about a mile north of the park on the highway toward Cassville, on the west side of the road. Tim helps manage this RR forum and is truly the preeminent expert on Roaring River, plus other fishing in this area. He can offer the latest info on which flies/lures are doing best and which water conditions/spots would be good for the style of fishing you want to enjoy.

Planning to float next weekend. 1) is it likely that the river will be well-behaved ? 2) is it likely that the smallmouth will be well/behaved ?
-
Thanks for the info, Tim. I'll be camping at RR next week and was planning to drive up to Crane for the day next Thurs and/or Fri. Is there an indicator of probable conditions (RR levels, gage in Finley or somewhere else), or do I just have to run up there and lay eyes on ?

A few years ago at the Swinging Bridge Access, I ran into a biologist from SMSU who was carrying a 5-gallon plastic bucket. I thought - What a cool way to carry my stuff through the brambles to stash down at the river. Turns out he was collecting pregnant female cottonmouths. Said that Crane was a great habitat, easy to collect lots of them in just a few minutes. And that is why I do all my fishing from my car with the windows rolled up.

No brown trout. Rainbows start where Greer Spring enters, about 1 mile upstream of highway 19 "Greer Crossing" and continue down to Riverton (highway 160). Smallmouth throughout, weakest where water is coldest - Greer to Turner. Some walleye downstream of Riverton. A few pike throughout. Fine to wet wade in the summer. Can't comment on the after dark fishing. Greer to Riverton is a great introductory float. Mostly trout on Day 1. Mostly smallmouth Day 2. Plenty of great camping spots - choice of Forest Service campsites and gravel bars. Be sure to check out Turner Spring and Boze Mill Spring.

I see them in my dreams. And smell them.

June 24 was high, fast, and clear. Bring your weighted flies.

Which section of the river is likely to be best for a late July day-float aimed for smallmouth ? What kind of flies should I tie ?

Stopped by on my drive back to Dallas to refill the SnakeFeeders last week - Purina Snake Chow plus a few mice. Also took the opportunity to wet my line. Water higher and faster than I have ever experienced during my summer trips. Plenty of fun once I got it figured. Lost 2 outrageous fish into the rootwads (I was not man enough to handle them on a 2-wt rod with 5x tippet !). But was able to bring several close enough to kiss. Thank you everyone for taking such great care of this gem.

Another great trip to the Little Piney ! Water was faster and higher than I had ever experienced. Fishing was fine, if not different than past summer visits. Campgrounds were a bit damp, and the ranger tried to talk me out of campsite on Thursday night before the big rain. If you look closely, you can see the subtle overnight difference in the river. Thursday, June 18 Friday, June 19 By Monday, June 22, all was clear enough again for fishing. Only 1 casualty - Ifell in the river and seriously injured my knee, making it very difficult to wade and balance a beverage at the same time. To make matters worse, I developed what my dermaologist has designated "Leeches on the Knee". He had informed me that there is only 1 recognized treatment. I will send the CC update when time permits. So I am to spend as much time as possible sitting in the river.

I floated the Current every summer from Baptist to Van Buren. Beautiful water, but hated the crowds. Discovered the Eleven Point about 15 years ago and haven't found reason to revisit the Current. Lots to see. Great fishing. Check with Brian for local lodging, canoe rental/shuttle, and latest fishing conditions. Be sure to investigate the historical landmarks and springs along the portion(s) you decide to float.

Any guess if it would be worth a trip on Tuesday or Wednesday ?

Nice fishing in the drizzle Wednesday night. Spotty success in the rain on Thursday. Not a chance after we woke up on Friday morning. Had the campground to ourselves.
-
Have fished downstream only as far as Mill Dam Hollow (7400 off Highway T). Mixed trout and smallmouth in that area. Will check out the Highway P options next time I'm passing through !

My notes on Current River, including downstream from Two Rivers: Current River Mile Guide - 2Sheds 2005 Update.doc Concerning Eleven Point River: My only opportunity is mid-Summer, so I have always put in at Greer Access. Plenty of nice wade fishing from that location. Recently have been taking out at The Narrows (H142), but have also floated down to Myrtle Landing (last takeout in MO). Percentage of smallmouth increases around Connor Chute and trout harder to find after Boze Mill. Start picking up a few walleye downstream of Riverton (H160), but have never caught many.

Did not notice the scupin fillet on your breakfast platter. Are the Ozarks wonderful ?

Anyone camped at Lane Springs lately ? Is the campground flooded out ?
