Your Opinion Needed For The Best Snagging Rod
kelly replied to fishrman2's topic in General Angling Discussion
I have caught tons of paddlefish on my ten foot Uglystik. I have had it for twenty five years and have replaced the tip once and the reel three times. I have smacked it against the ground and rocks numerous times when I got careless and it hasn't failed me yet. Kelly -
Lots of parking available tho. LOL Funny how it works out like that.

kansasboy13 I was there just last Saturday and it was high and fast and mudddy. Didn't even wet a line. kelly

Well guys, the Neosho is up and running. Just a wave at the dam at Chetopa. My dad and I tried snagging today but all we got were scales. I heard they were snagging them at the Miami park so my guess is that they will be here Sunday or Monday. The water is just perfect though. we caught several whites in the two weeks before and I saw one eleven pound wiper come out of there also. Minnows seem to be the bait dejour with jigs running a distant second. Bighill creek has heated up since the rain. I guess we got somewhere in the vicinity of five or six inches of rain this week. White bass are hitting anything we throw but only in the clearer water between the bridge and the creek south of 24000 road. The place is called the horse trails area, you can't miss it, theres a big sign that says...Horse Trails.java script:emoticon('', 'smid_7') Anyway, back on the subject of snagging I watched an 'ol boy land a buffalo today that pushed forty pounds pretty hard. All I had to show were a couple of one inch scales. Remember, barbless is the law now. Kelly

I have used the same 10' Ugly Stick for a number of years now...20 I think. I also use sixty pound Spiderwire but I tie my sinker on with lighter stuff or mono. Here in Kansas we now have to use barbless hooks or bend them flat at least. Kelly

My son Jeff and I and my good friend Steve from Nixa fished Sunday out of Lilley's. It was eighteen degrees when we hit the water. I thought packing a bow or rifle would be more appropriate then a fishing rod, but oh well. We spent the day casting and trolling gold and rainbow Rapalas and had a blast. we ended up with about sixty fish most over twelve inches and a lot in the fourteen to sixteen inch range. We fished between the resort and the power lines with the majority of the action from the public dock to the next bend. When we would hit the right spot all three of us would get hit and a number of times we had multiple fish on at once. Man, I hated to leave. Kelly

I know some guys who use an old pickup bed stock rack turned upside down. Once it is turned over hinge a heavy door at the top with a rope between the catch and the food pan. Be sure to stake it down and fence around the bottom so the babies don't get out. Kelly

Can I get a discount on that cabin for the weekend? Kelly

Kendall #427 blue grease is a Lithium soap base grease, which means it will mix with water, and it also contains no Moly. Moly is absolutely the best lube available. It is magnetic so it holds to metal and takes a 525,000 lb shock load. And of course the color of grease is just that...color. It is just dye. Try the water test and tell me what you think. Kelly

I just read this post so I am sorry this reply is so late. Whatever you do as far as hardware is probably not as important as the grease you use. Try this test with your current grease. Take a good amount in your hand and put it under water (stream or bucket) then rub it with the other hand. See if it takes in water and washes away or changes color in the case of red grease. If it does that means the grease is not waterPROOF. The best thing one can do is use a true waterproof grease. Lithium is soap and is the base for most grease. Unfortunately it just washes away. Try a true waterproof grease like Schaeffer #238 moly grease. It simply will not wash away and it will cool down the bearing and extend it's life immensely. Go to schaefferoil.com and use the dealer find feature. And yes I sell it but not in your area so I will not gain anything from this reply, but you might. Kelly

I use four pound Trilene XL in green. If I am fishing large lures like six or seven inch Rogues or at night I use heavy line like twelve or fifteen pound. I don't do that so much anymore as I have a lot more fun with the smaller lures. I catch way more fish on three inch lures that suspend. I yank or crank them down a few feet then pause every ten feet or so for as long as you can stand it. This is a lot of fun under the cable with the water running because the fish don't seem to waste any time hitting it once they make up their mind. Good luck Kelly

Rapala's are the ticket, the more gold the better. And don't be above trolling them either. I have caught my biggest browns trolling above Lilleys. I personally like suspending lures as I have caught a lot of them during a long pause in my retrieve.

Cool, I love new toys. Thanks.

No, I thought about it but by the time I got all the honey-do's out of the way all I could do was the dam at Big Hill in the rain after dark. But I loved it. first time out since July 16th. Where did you catch the cfm's?

Gonefishin, you asked about the commercial construction. Here is one for you. I heard Paul Harvey this morning talking about Branson considering a monorail of some sort to connect SDC and the major shows on the strip. Is this something new or is it the same story I have heard for about ten years now about Disney coming to town. Kelly

You are kidding, .....right? I mean about Al not the cows resisting.

I have caught lots of carp on a fly rod in the Neosho. I assume that is what you meant by "on the fly". I've used corn and a wheaties/strawberry soda dough ball with corn being the best. There are some big Wipers right below the dam. A fly rod and a white jig would be a blast. I got my line broken twice Saturday. Seven pounder was the fish of the day. Kelly

I have read that the world has not been this warm for four hundred years. Environmentalists blame it on greenhouse gasses produced by man's cars, factories, power plants etc. Since none of these things were around back then, what WAS around four hundred years ago that made it so warm?

I have this really big net and I throw it...um...never mind

Yes I took a picture with my camera phone... but in my haste I did not save it so it is a cyberfish now. My dad and I went again today. I caught over a hundred fish mostly drum and whites, all were small with one nice channel cat. There were a few biguns working the shad over pretty good but all in all I think it is about to end unless we get some water. Kelly

If you caught me there on Friday you would be lucky, how was the reunion? I have never attended one of my own. The water in the Neosho is very low but I have seen it lower. I am amazed that there are whites and hybrids there still. I have caught them as early as Feb but usually no later that the first of June. It is the stripers that have me excited. If there are five pounders there already, how long before ten pounders are common? Kelly

Just returned from a trip to the Chetopa Ks dam on the Neosho river. My dad and I caught about seventy fish including hybrids and stripers (two). I had never caught a striper before let alone seen them in the Neosho. They weighed about four pounds each and my dad caught one the next day that went five even. I also caught an eight pound flathead on my light tackle. Mostly we caught whites and hybrids with some drum mixed in, one went six pounds. We stood next to the dam and cast paralell to it and tried to stay in the small boils. It seems that shiney spoons worked the best but white jigs were very good also. Like I said I had never seen stripers in the Neosho before but it seem that they are there now. Does anyone know, will there be a ton of them now? Kelly

Sorry guys, I have been busy and have forgotten about the forum. I just returned from Chetopa dam and the fish are biting. I fished with my dad today. He has been telling me stories about the thirty to forty fish he has been catching in the evening. I have been some but only to get skunked. Today was my turn. We caught about seventy fish altogether, Largemouth, whites, hybrids, stripers, crappie, carp, gar, drum, and an eight pound flathead (in the mouth on a spoon, fourlb test hoo-rah.) They really liked chrome or red lures in the boils. I caught my first striper today also, about three pounds, dads was bigger. The water is down but the fish are still there. If you go, the best place when the water is low is paralell with the dam from the corners. It will take a looooong cast (100 ft or so) to get into the middle current where the bigger fish are but a chrome and whatever color kastmaster spoon 3/8 oz or so will do the trick. I was dragging it slowly as close to the dam as I could keep it. It seemed that the fish really liked it there. But don't get me wrong there are plenty of fish ten feet from shore. One could launch a small jon boat right at the dam and fish the boils that way, sure beats wading. I use the word boil lightly. They are no larger than a washtub right now so don.t let me scare you off if you have not been there. If it was legal I would have been standing on the dam today. Well its off to the races tonight, the late models are runnin' at Coffeyville. Kelly
