Speaking of running in the fog, I was very distressed on my visit this summer to see boats running wide open in fog where I could aee about 10 feet in front of my boat. I was uncomfortable going at idle speed and had several boat blow past me wide open. Luckily, I could hear them coming and get out of the way, but what were they thinking. Never anchor in the middle of the lake in the fog. I'm not sure lights would help at the speeds these boats were going. I have not seen this level of stupidity at any other lake.

Any problem boating past the rebar area? I'd hate to hit one of those buggers.

Coming to Taney with my boat in about two weeks. With the current state of generation, how much current is there below Fall creek to the Landing? Trying to figure out what kind of fishing to be ready for. Can you still anchor or do you have to drift fish? Looks like between 8000 and 12000 cfs throughout the day and night. That is about equivalent to two generators, right? I believe four generators is the max - which equates to strong current all the way to the Landing. Any other techniques to try with the current conditions - trolling? Thanks.

Try this - it works for me. Before you hit the lake with your baitcasting rig, peel off as much line as your longest cast might be then about 5 yards more. Put a piece of scotch tape on the spool, then wind in the line. This will prevent the tangle from getting deep in the spool without effecting your casting. You can still birdnest but it won't nearly as bad. Another trick, as soon as you foul up, crank down your drag, put your thumb over the spool and apply pressure, turn the crank abouit 5 times. Tangle usually comes right out.

Lost, also, I hesitate to say it here, but....try fishing outlet 2, I know, I know its unsporting, however it will get you some practice detecting strikes, setting the hook, landing fish and releasing unharmed. Being a converted bass fisherman, I had a hard time until I caught a quite a few and got the feel. While you are there, experiment with different hook-sets: ie. strip set, downstream sweep, etc. to see what works best. Once you get the hang of it move to other areas - worked for me. Try it early in the morning for less crowds. Consider it your driving range preparation before a round.

Lost, I know more experienced fishers will comment soon, but here's my 2 cents. The "take" is sometimes very subtle and extremely hard to detect, especially using scuds and midges. Use the smallest indicator that will float your fly. I learned the hard way that big indicators = less fish. Seeing the size of indicators some use on Taney, I wonder how they catch any fish - I know for sure they are catching less than they could. A small indicator (I now use 1/2 or a whole palsa) does three things: shows subtle takes better, creates less unnatural drag and is less disturbing to the trout. You may have been getting takes but weren't able to detect them. The level of concentration required is hard to get used to. Its very tiring to concentrate all day while fishing. Sometimes the take is just a very slight pause in the palsa's drift. If you were putting the right sized scuds and midges on the fish, you probably got way more takes that you thought you did. Hope that helps.

Phil should be commended for his great site - its a lot more work than most people think. A forum like this can be over-run with spammers in short order, but this site is maintained almost to perfection. I for one got back into trout fishing because of the information on this site. Many of us have caught more than 51 in a shorter time period. OK, maybe it was 49, maybe it was 52, doesn't matter. I for one sometimes keep track just for my records. You are off base to basically call someone a lier when you have no proof.

I'm working on a new patterns the Great Blue Heron soft hackle. Sure to be the best new fly in the Ozarks. Guaranteed to catch monster trout , good for blue gill also.

Can we use blue heron feather for fly tying? Just come up with a new hot fly that's guaranteed to catch trout. The population of herons would start to dwindle after that. Heck, if people can poach trout won't these same people poach herons. I say, put the unsportsman crowd to work for us. Seriously, I sometimes use herons as fish finders. You know that were they are stalking, there are fish. Doesn't matter much on Taney as there are fish all over.

Is there any way to wade and not attract fish to your feet? I tried wading slowly and placing my feet carefully, but they just follow you around like the pied piper.

I got an 18 inch ice fishing rod that might be useful.

Are there any good techniques for hooking and landing more trout. Last trip to Taney, about half the bites I detected all I could do was turn the fish. Then about half of those I hooked threw the hook before I could land them, are these percentages about on par? I was using a foam strike indicator, 2 lb flourocarbon leader and #18 scuds. I made sure my hook was sharp. One problem may be that I was too deticate setting the hook with the light leader. Does a downstream sweeping hookset help? Thanks, and thanks to all those anglers fishing near the dam that helped me. For anyone new to fishing Taney - the anglers near the dam seem aloof until you strike up a conversation - tell them you are a beginner and are looking for help, that seems to open the flood gate of good information.

A metal hook through its gills is enough to cause deadly injury. I understand the kid and parents were excited and wanted to show the weight. But when you catch a sub-legal fish, your first priority is to cause as little harm to the fish as possible and get it released as soon as possible. How about a quick pic of the kid holding the fish by the jaw. How many other kids won't be able to catch this fish now? If we don't teach the young kids to treat the fish with great respect then no one will. I'm really sick of seeing trout handled roughly when its not necessary.

If no one else is going to, guess I'll have to. Why are they weighing a fish that must be released "unharmed"? That fish looks dead or close to it to me. Its great that this family is teaching their kids how to fish but they should also teach them how to respect their quarry. Last trip to Taney I saw many slot length rainbows dead, why have a slot limit and a 20 in limit for browns if we're going to kill them anyway.

Made my firt trip to Taney this week. It was everything I'd imagined. Everyone was respectful and willing to help if asked, but one thing disturbed me. 95% of the anglers are very careful to release their fish unharmed, but there were a few exceptions. One guy was beaching every fish, letting it flop on the rocks for 1-2 minutes while it tired itself out, then when it stopped flipping, unhooked it and dropped it from a height of 2-3 feet into the shallow water. Others were squeezing fish around the middle, to measure them, when they were obviously over 12 inches, and taking their time about it. Saw a older lady do this to a fish that was at least 15 inches to measure. Seems they thought they were catching bass. What do you do in this situation, kind of ruined the trip to see this.
