  1. I agree.. Dave Hughes's books are quite helpful. Its the little tips and tricks that when you teach them to yourself they really do become useful and eventually second nature on the stream.
  2. Agreed, a very Merry to all! Here is to a prosperous new year as well. See you Sunday morning at the OAF New Years meet up
  3. Just wanted to say thanks to all of you who have bought reels from me via this posting. Glad to hook you up with quality gear that will keep on keepin' on.. BTW, I store all my reels in these Bass Pro Reel Totes : For $26 bucks you cant beat it! It holds 10 reels. I have 5 and none of the zippers have failed me yet.
  4. I only had one reel I bought on the cheap and was never all that impressed by it. It actually had a plastic clutch that would burn / melt up when salmon would make screaming runs. They are still sold under many names. eBay sellers still get $40-50-60 for them. If you want to know what it is - shoot me a message.
  5. I say buy any of Lefty Kreh's books... particularly; Advanced Fly Fishing Techniques: Secrets of an Avid Fisherman. I learned a ton from that book. You can buy it off www.abebooks.com right now for $1.00 and $2.95 shipped from St. Louis. http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/BookDetailsPL?bi=5111445874&searchurl=sts%3Dt%26tn%3DAdvanced%2BFly%2BFishing%26x%3D56%26y%3D4
  6. 200 bones for these Korkers with 2 soles included.. rubber and studded rubber. These are the new version (3.) and the sole will never give you troutble or come off. The lacing system is the bees knees... I tried on a pair at River Run yesterday.
  7. We camped 3 nights at ROLF and couldn't hardly fish. The float was awesome, but I tore a pontoon 2nd day On a side note - those who didnt notice should see my previous post above about those Cabelas boots for $49.99. I bought a pair today. So now I am a conformist. Feels kinda rotten to me.
  8. Can someone tell me what I saw one year on the NFotW in August. You couldn't even get a drift because of all the muck knocked loose by canoes and such. Was that Didymo or just crazy rampant algae bloom ?
  9. 60 bucks ?? I cannot seem to find hardly any that aren't $130-$180! Here is the link to Bass Pro's selection of wading boots (22 pairs) : http://www.basspro.com/Fly-Fishing-Waders-Wading-Boots/_/N-1z11d64#Category Here is Cabela's (26 pairs) : http://www.cabelas.com/catalog/browse/footwear-mens-footwear-mens-waders-mens-wading-boots/_/N-1101202/Ns-CATEGORY_SEQ_103896180?WTz_l=SBC%3BMMcat104797980%3Bcat104674680 * On sale for $49, here is the Cabela's Ultralight 2 Lug Wading boot, comes with studs to screw in : http://www.cabelas.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId=1161054&categoryId=0&parentCategoryId=0&subCategoryId=0&indexId=0&productVariantId=2843667&quantity=1&itemGUID=6bd5ce25ac1070563f7b7a85b4e9df9f&WTz_l=SBC%3BMMcat104797980%3Bcat104674680%3Bcat103896180&destination=%2Fcheckout%2Fitem_added_to_cart.jsp%3Fresult%3Dsuccess%26categoryIds%3D104797980%7C104747580%7C104674680%7C103896180%26productId%3D1161054%26backToPreviousUrl%3D%252Fcatalog%252Fproduct.jsp%253FproductId%253D1161054%2526dropDownGroupValues%253A0%253D013%2526dropDownGroupValues%253A0%253D292 And here is LLBean (7 pairs, they have a good one for $99 I have used in the past - but read about eyelet quality) : http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/3937/0/Relevance/1?nav=ln-1109
  10. So now we have a bevy of guys who are just one bad slide or twisting tweak away from being on the DL, more than likely longer than just a 15 day stint : Berkman Beltran Furcal Holiday Carpenter, Chris Westbrook ugh....
  11. BUMP - for those like me who wanted to read more on the subject.
  12. Great pictures David. Heartwarmingly cute. The lighter side of Lake Taneycomos upper end.
  13. Did they say for how much ?? and didnt he start out as a Royal ? I believe so.. Phil said he thought so.. then went to SF.
  14. fishinwrench wrote; " If it's that big of a deal then how can they afford to wait until March ? " Nice. I laughed out loud. Just for pure comedies sake. That was funny.
  15. Where I fished today on Turkey is just gorgeous. Totally fishable. Just not a ton of fish. Breathtaking scenery, creek gravel is clean - water crystal clear. Even found a new spot far far away from those old eyesores. In fact, the only eyesore I found were some old piles of beer cans at a makeshift campsite. I find Turkey as one of my favorite little unknown spots now. As of this past Tuesday anyways. THANKS Dennis. EDIT - tell me this ain't good looking water :
  16. Outside Bend wrote; " There's a lot of evidence didymo alters trout's prey base, creating higher populations of midges and worms and lower populations of mayflies, stoneflies, and caddisflies. There's also some indications it may interfere with spawning activities, although there hasn't been much research in that area. " OK.. I understand that completely.. but Lake Taneycomo already has : 1. An enormous population of midges and planarian 2. Very Low (if any) population of mayflies, stoneflies and caddisflies 3. Little to zilch spawning population (under 2% per MDC) The benefits for Taneycomo still are not really proven to me. I just don't want to be told to conform .. to ruin a pair of perfectly good felt soled boots or felt soled bootfoot hippers or bootfoot waders (yes, I own all 3) is crazy talk. Now I understand for any and all of the other Missouri trout fisheries... but for Taney... come on now. Too little too late. ** Why not concentrate more efforts on minimum flow ??? or even better, our horrible oxygen issue ?!?! 2 Parts Per Million is not the 6PPM that was agreed upon years ago. Liquid oxygen costs out the butt for SWPA...and they hardly use it for that very reason. ** ALSO - think about this.. say a guy who fishes Taney once or twice a year is not up on this new regulation and drives all the way to Branson with the intention of seeing a show or two with the family and hitting the river once or twice. If he brings felts, he just plain cannot fish. There is the rub if you ask me. Now he either gives up on fishing entirely for his scheduled trip or decides to buy new boots, yet another expense on his Branson trip.
  17. At the end - the guy says " What's your favorite trout stream worth to you ? " So I get it. I will buy a new pair of boots. I have already had the Five-Ten black soled boots by LLBean and they were great. Bass Pro will surely sell a ton of the Eco-Clear boot now. Brian
  18. I would love to hear the reasons why this change makes 100% sense. EDIT - here is the LINK and the VIDEO : http://mdc.mo.gov/newsroom/mdc-bans-porous-soled-waders-help-protect-trout-waters-invasive-algae
  19. I understand why... but really ???? Banning felt soled boots ???? Really .... now another thing MDC river monitors will be watching for... I understand Simms quit entirely making felt soled anything - but by popular demand - they reintroduced them. Very tough to enforce.. and too little too late if you ask me. Just my .02. Brian
  20. gotmuddy - I have a ton of 4-5-6 wt weight reels... maybe if you shoot me a PM we can go over some more particulars. Dano - in the photo's with the 3 Hardy made reels.. the LRH Lightweight is on far left in both photos. The spool is ported and it is carrying a brand new unfished DT4F Orvis line. The reel marked "The Lightweight" is on the far right - but it sold. (thanks) To me, its all about spending a good dollar for a reel that will give you good service no matter what, forever. Otherwise it is disposable... and none of my reels would ever fit that description. You just gotta do your homework. Brian
  21. I have moved a couple reels now... anyone else have a wish list ? Jeez louise, I have quite a few extra, mostly vintage and the like. Brian
  22. Also, if you want to cast a few rod makers rods.. let me know. I could help you the see what / where / when / why / and how. Brian edit - I think I found your Turkey Creek honey holes... wow.. what a beautiful creek.
  23. Gavin, the JW Young reel was made between 1925 and 1939. It is a Pattern #5 Trout sized Salmon reel according to my JW Young and Sons book by Rupe Atwood. It measures just a hair under 3 1/2, probably 3 7/16ths. It has a smooth brass 2 screw foot and was the 1st Young reel with the "take apart" center spool assembly. It has a neat braided nylon non silk line on it that is brand new. A complete original package. Here is a shot of the backside: Here is the backside shot of the LRH Lightweight (which is 3 3/16) the CFO IV, and the dual check 1950's reel, The Lightweight. The LRH was cleaned and treated with Boeshield when I got it and has a brand new unfished DT4 Orvis line on it.
  24. Check this, last post before mine was Dec 09 : http://ozarkanglers.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=20439&st=0&gopid=215292&#entry215292
  25. Yeah, I believe his wife got very ill. The building is still there. It is the 4th or 5th building on the left hand (Taneycomo) side right ? Before the blinking light ? I miss that guy.... he was really neat.
