  1. I am not quite sure they carry leprosy, I think they just use them as lab rats as incubators for the disease. I don't think they carry it in the wild. I really don't plan on handling them much. I have read when scared they will spray a putrid runny diarrhea at you. I am not going to play around with them, just eliminate.
  2. Our little buddies from Texas have invaded my space, digging up all of those Jap Beetle grubs that have also invaded. I have been seeing them on the game cam lately. When I almost twisted an ankle the other night in one of their hole, I decided it was time to do something. Research on the net revealed that they do not respond to bait traps. The only way to catch them is to funnel them into a trap. They have poor eyesight and wander along smelling for grubs and worms, You build a little fence to guide them into a trap. Sat. while shopping, I came across some cheap gutter guard at Big Lots. 20' roll for $2.50. Picked up some long bamboo skewers in the BBQ section to use for posts for another $1.50. I now have a 40' funnel to guide the little buggers into a live trap I already had. It has been out for a few nights without any luck. I reset in an area they worked last night in hopes that I will have better luck. Here you go Justin.
  3. So, how did it weather the storm?
  4. Do they use fishing line for abortions now? I thought it was coathangers.
  5. And fishing fair on worms in the evening. ... I did not receive the survey. The last one I participated was the duck zone, season one last fall. Final results, MDC decided no matter what they did, they could not make everyone happy, so they left it as it was.
  6. This drought has affected the garden, my bees, and my normal outdoor summer recreation. Most of the streams I fish are just trickles. I have left them alone. Camping has been dampered by not being able to have a camp fire. About 1 in 3 bees hitting the landing pad today were loaded with pollen. The rain has perked everything up around here today. Grass is greener, garden is not wilted.
  7. August has been a dry month for the bees. I have gotten rid of all my pests and did all I could for my hive's health. The rest was up to mother nature. We did have one small rain a few weeks back and the inspection of the hive revealed many new eggs. Wed., I opened up and looked in only to find a few sealed brood and no new egg laying. The number of bees in the hive have dwindled to around 20,000, about a third of what I would expect for this time of the year. But no flowers equal no pollen for them to feed the young, There was none stored on the combs that I could find. This morning they are out in force gathering pollen. Pollen is needed as their growth food. Honey and nectar is just for adults. I hope it helps them start laying again. Otherwise I am going to have to buy some more bees and a stronger queen to get them thru the winter that is coming soon. Flowers are blooming in the garden this morning, marigolds and zinnias. Squash and okra are blooming also. Rain gauge is at 1 3/4 inch. I would like to see that double before the weekend is over, but the sun is out now. Note the different colors of pollen they are collecting, who knows from which flower it comes from. Hummingbird activity is up too, feeders are getting a good workout.
  8. Since Jackson was hit a few years back and Oak Ridge just north of it gets pounded about once a year now with a tornado, people are skittish when they hear them sirens. I like to make the decision myself looking at the radar and listening to NWS weather radio. But they got our attention and I used the other tools to reason that there was not anything coming. The radar at the time was not showing anything strong, and we did not get anything strong. I think they based it on a report of a rotating cloud from a weather spotter yesterday in a small town about 20 miles west of where we were.
  9. On that we both agree, sorry I took it the wrong way. I for one believe in the training, but I do not feel you need to be licensed to carry or hide it all of the time.
  10. Unfortunately the last on stage is the one that does not inspire. His only hope is that he may be better than what is there now. The rest of the show showed some promise. Ole Dirty Harry is 82 and cracking them out without a script.
  11. Jackson and Cape Girardeau both fired up the tornado sirens. I have family working in both towns and the phone was hot for a few minutes. The actual storm being tracked was near Marble Hill in Bollinger County and not even going to go close to either town. I still have not heard of any damage. Like I said, we were drinking Friday beverages at the office. I had been watching the storm track and making plans for the later weekend after the fact. It all popped up fast and was over in a matter of about 20 minutes. NWS showed a brief warning. Funny thing, now we have all of the tech available, sirens with early warning, cell phone apps, internet, TV, radio. Everyone is a weather expert and panic spreads fast. I had one car flashing lights trying to pass me on a 4 lane road. People were flying down the road, trying to beat the storm home. We are getting another shower now. The ground is soaking it up like a sponge.
  12. Ok, I give up. Why would you crawl thru a cave during a rain event? During a rain, it drains off into sinkholes which are a part of any cave system.
  13. Nope, it was still "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly". Did you see the hair? Looks like the lap dance back stage roughed him up a little......... But he still carried the crowd.
  14. I would have thought the peak of the caving season was during dry hot weather. Less chance of flash flooding due to storms dumping into the karst system. Nice cool getaway from the heat. I was young and thought that caving looked like fun. Now as I age, crawling around damp tight places have lost their interest. I do still enjoy the show caves that you can walk thru standing up and dry.
  15. We were sitting around work drinking Friday beverages when the sirens started blasting in town. Mass pandamonium, tornado warning with one spotted tracking out towards the house. One wreck on the way home, little mustang took out the corner of a commercial building. Others driving like crazy into the path of the storm. False alarm, nothing spotted. Did get a little 1/2 inch burst out of the system as it moved thru. First shower of the day at dry ridge ranch.
  16. I thought you could use one of them things called a "fillet knife" to do the job.
  17. Chief Grey Bear, on 30 August 2012 - 08:53 PM, said: but hell, I say repeal it and let everyone carry anywhere and anytime! On the hip on in the coat. jdmidwest, on 30 August 2012 - 09:46 PM, said: So do you have a problem with Constitutional Carry? I am confused by the question. I was puzzled by the statement, are you for or against Constitutional Carry? You made the statement in a sarcastic way. I am all for the training portion for anyone to carry any type of firearm. Hunter Ed and the courses for CCW are great training. Since society has changed and fathers don't always show their offspring the basics of firearms handling, we have to rely on others to show them.
  18. You mentioned doing away with the testing and licensing and let everyone carry openly. Are you advocating Constitutional Carry?
  19. But we all know the female snakes are bigger. But when you call it a granny, it does sound less menacing.
  20. So do you have a problem with Constitutional Carry?
  21. The idea of self protection starts with your brain. First, you have to realize, no matter how safe you feel, there may be some a hole come along and ruin it. It can happen in your bedroom, your favorite fishing hole, getting out of your car. The simple fact is, there are persons that are out there that will do you harm with no personal vendetta against you. You may be a innocent bystander, or you may be a target because you have something that someone else wants. A gun is a great responsibility, it is deadly force, you will have to use your brain to make a decision to end another life. A knife, pepper spray, squealing like a little girl may make a difference. But if an armed criminal wants to do me harm, I want equal force or superior force. I want to prevent someone else from doing me harm, end of story. It is that simple, cut and dry.
  22. just pickin on the details
  23. If you have not taken the course, how do you know what is in it?
  24. That grandpa cottonmouth, did you really get close enough to sex it? I have a hard time sexing snakes up close looking between the bottom scales. You have me stumped on the location of this one.
