  1. My next door neighbor "had" this mini weiner dog. This is the neighbor everyone dreads to have move next door to you. Moved out to the country because he was tired of all the ordinances in the city. He bought the place on the other side of me for his daughter when it came up for sale. He has always had 4 dogs from rotweilers to weiner dogs. All untrained and in everyones yards and trash. The first thing he did to upset the balance of the neighborhood was to dig a 20'x30' "pond" in the back yard of his one acre lot. This lead to lots of mosquitos, the trophy one being the one I found this summer that was larger than a dime. Next, son in law brought home a fully auto H&K MP5 to shoot. I came home and they were shooting at a milk jug, full auto, from one side of the pond to the other. They used my yard, a neighbors yard, and a neighbors shop as a backstop. They could not figure out why I would call the law when I asked them to stop and they didn't. He thought he had Elmer Fudd bullets that stop in mid air and drop to the ground when they reach the end of his property. He retaliated by trimming my row of pines I had the forethought to plant at each edge of the property line clean off to the trunk on his side. On with the weiner dog. Last year, he got the mini weiner dog when his older weiner dog was run over. Seems like he has to keep a minimum of 4 dogs running in and out of his house at all times. This thing was all over the place and would run up and bite you if it got a chance. It was not afraid of sticks, hoes, guns, or rocks. He tugged my pants a few times, bit my girlfriend, and generally made a pest out of himself. I caught him in a live trap I set for coons getting in the trash twice this summer. First time, girlfriend would not let me "take care" of him. Second time, too many of his family and him were out for me to take care of the problem. Finally, the dog bit the neighbor on the other side's daughter. He called the sheriff, filed a complaint, and informed him that he would shoot the dog if it came back in his yard. The sheriff deputy informed him that he had the right to protect himself from what was now a known biting dog. Last Sunday, I decided to do yard work instead of fishing. I mowed and mulched leaves and started trimming trees. One thing lead to another and I ended up with 20 piles of limbs to clean up. I was sharpening the chain saw when 2 shots rang out and a dog started yelping the yelp of major pain. I walked over to my tree line and spotted the guy that had the dog bite. I asked "Did you shoot"? Yes! "Do any good"? Yes!!! Seems like the shot from his 38 was a little off and he gutshot the dog. It made it back thru the doggy door and was yelping in the house. Owners were still at church. This was getting to good to miss. About an hour later, they came home from church. I was carrying the limbs down the hill to a pile and he caught me at the top. We talked about trees and I informed him that his pit bull lab mix had come across the yard after my daughter on Friday. I informed him that it will be shoot on sight if I see him do it again. Then his wifey starts hollaring inside the house and I knew the show was on. Next trip up the hill, here comes neighbor back over. "Have you heard any shots today"? I replied that I had heard shots all day and about that time there was one in the distance. Then he said they found the dog gutshot, bleeding out, in the house. I started to offer my services to "finish the job" when the shooter started down the road to my property. The show was on. The owner of the dog started cussing and threatening the shooter as he came down the road to my yard. Shooter came into my yard and asked if I had problems with their dogs, which I replied that I had already discussed it with the owner after church. I tried to diffuse the situation some as the owner was getting out of hand and his grandkid was standing with him. I was informed that the grandkid had heard it before. When the owner threatened the shooter, his kids, his wife, and his dog I broke it up in my yard. Owner threatened to shoot any of them if he caught them in his yard. The law was on the way but it took 30 minutes. All said and done, shooter was in the right. Dog owner received a summons to appear in court for charges of Animal Neglict. Seems like you can't let dogs run free in this county. It is the responsibility of the pet owner to control the animal or it is a class b misdameanor with a $500 fine, All has been pretty quite in the ole neighborhood. I was told that the pit bull lab grabbed another dog thru a woven wire fence last week. I have not seen it since.. Better than Jerry Springer!

    Ducks?

Our season opens Sat. Ducks are down, big migration 2 weeks ago with that big front. I saw snows and ducks flying south on that one. Many ponds and lakes around here have ducks on them.
  4. Man, what a great weekend. I left out early Saturday morning for the upper Current River on my annual late October trip. For the last 20 years I have made a trip to the upper Current River the last weekend of October. For several years, it was the way I spent Halloween, lately since my daughter and current job, it has been sometime in the last week of October. The air was cool and crisp and some areas received the first frost of the season. By the time I reached Fredricktown, there was patchy frost in the lower valleys. I took my time and hit several gun shops along the way, not in a hurry for anything, I had all weekend. Between Boss and Bixby on Hwy 32 I saw a Bald Eagle in a dead snag next to the road, his white head and yellow beak shining in the morning sun. I reached Montauk around 12:30 and bought the tag. Started in the upper fly area and worked my way down. First thing I noticed that the Fly Area was packed with people. I fished around them for a while till I found a pod of fish in a quiet area. There was a high bank on the other side so I figured I could fish them for a while in peace. They were looking up and I took advantage of it. I started force feeding them some hares ear caddis, foam ants, and foam beetles. Nothing like a trout on a dry fly. I landed 4 or 5 till some kid decided he would slide down the bank to check the water. This turned the fish off for a while along with the fact that a herd of spinfishers stomped thru the hole behind me. I caught several fish that afternoon throughout the fly area on dries and the primrose and pearl. Then it was off to Licking to spend the night in the motel. Sunday morning dawned spectacular, not as cold as the one before. I headed off to the river in an undisclosed location. On arrival, there was only 1 other car and 3 flyfishers prepping for fishing. I hit a trail and come out down river a 1/2 mile or so and started fishing. I hooked up with one on a beadhead right off the bat. I fished for a while, not doing great, but hitting a few every now and then. I was really expecting more, but the ones I came across were very shy and not feeding very aggressively. I worked my way back upstream and come across 2 of the guys in the lot. One was fighting a very big fish so I stuck around and watched. I took a pic of him with his fish and emailed it to them as they did not have a camera. It was a nice breeder brown, male, about 28 to 30 inches. I emailed him today and they said they caught one bigger later in the day. Walking out I caught a few more, nothing big. I left out around noon and there was still no other cars in the area. The wind had started to pick up and leaves were coming down. I have a pic showing a big redd on one of the shoals that held 6 nice brownies, they did not show up well. It is that time of the year, watch out and leave them alone. I don't recommend targeting spawning fish, let them do their thing and hook them later. I even come across a 3 lb brown on a bed in the middle of the park at Montauk. I left the river and went back to the park assuming most would be gone like they normally do at noon on Sunday. Wrong! Fly area was packed but the rest of the river was empty. I fished thru the campground without any company. Pleasant drive home with a nice tailwind and beautiful fall colors.
  5. Joel, I assume the troops are still in need of some "supplies". Any suggestions on what they need and maybe we can start sending them over some Christmas Packages. I know the address is on the website where to send stuff to but you may want to post it on here also. Thanks for the update. Looks like they still have a few more years, but the end is in sight.
  6. And then the priest whipped out his trusty .44 and blew the bear away. Now he sits in front of the fire on cold winter nights rubbing his feet on his nice warm bear skin rug. The End. That was funny.
  7. You're welcome, thats what were hang around for! If it is in good shape and was your father's, I leave it in the gun cabinet. If it is engraved, has a vent rib, or other features, it will have some collectors value. Mossberg makes a great shotgun also. Model 500 is about as tried and reliable as the 870. The 835 is a true magnum.
  8. I would think it should be ok, but email the factory at Winchester to be sure. Prolonged use of steel shot in a gun that old may damage the barrel. It may be more of a collector than a hunter, depends on what condition it is. It would be a good bargaining chip for a more modern pump or semi-auto. http://www.winchesterguns.com/
  9. You should be able to shoot steel if the choke is not full. I don't think it should hurt a Model 12. Might check the value of the shotgun, some Model 12's are gaining in collectors value.
  10. Trout generally replaced native Smallmouth Bass habitat in spring fed streams. They compete for basically the same food sources in Missouri, minnows and crayfish. But I like the open season on trout.
  11. The full size does not, the compact does. Even though I know it won't go off till I pull the trigger like a double action revolver, I still like the added safety on the compact. I will be carrying the compact on a daily basis, so I ordered it with the safety. With a little gunsmithing, I can make it go away without any functional effect on the pistol. I put another box thru it this weekend and it is starting to loosen up and shoot better. My groups are getting tighter.
  12. Interesting, I had read some articles that it became unstable after a period of time. Seemed like it had plenty of spunk when I fired it off in the driveway. I have also disposed of some smokeless powder because of the age. Something about temps and chemical reactions as they age and breakdown.
  13. Great fish, heading over tomorrow and hope to catch a few like him. Any hints on the egg pattern? Glo balls or something else?
  14. Could it be a demand issue? Hydro power is the cheapest form of energy out there. Others have to burn coal or natural gas or stick a nuclear rod in water. All of this involves the cost of the product to create the energy desired. Hydro power has no cost involved other than the operation of the equipment. All these years of drought have gotten us used low water most of the time. Now they have a good supply of water and are probably doing a little profit making. The lakes were formed for power generation and flood control. Fishing and recreation was just a bonus, although it does bring in significant tax revenue for the area.
  15. I always like the area below the bridge to the hatchery outlet. Of course, I never like to fish the long slow holes. I like faster water and sight fishing.
  16. I did not realize they had came out with a substitute, I will look next time in. I just noticed it was Goex with the 2f and 3f designations and thought about picking some up for my pistol. I just disposed of about a pound I had setting around here since 1995, I was afraid it may start decomposing from age. I use Hodgen Triple 7 for my rifle and have not shot it in the pistol. For that matter, I have not shot either in about 4 years. I need more time to play with my toys. I have a Traditions Hawken 50 cal rifle/pistol combo. I have been looking for a Ruger Black Powder revolver. It was out in plain sight on the shelf. I doubt if the numbnuts that run that shop know how to store it. It was not with the other reloading powders but with all of the other black powders. I know we always stored it behind the counter in a powder vault made out of fireproof sheetrock. If I remember right, we could only keep so much on hand and carried all of the f designations, not just 2 and 3. Of course, we were a wholesaler also that supplied several smaller shops and 3 of our own.
  17. The background gave the pic a different perspective. Looks like you were on a dock.
  18. I run across this site a week ago doing research on a couple of my new handguns. http://mp-pistol.com/boards/ As if I needed another place to waste time on the web. This site has loads of info on M&P weapons systems and other types of guns also. It even has a political forum section, but it seems to lean to one side. I have been shooting my new M&P 45c for 2 weeks now and I love it.
  19. Is he walking on water? Looks like it in the pic.
  20. Looks good Phil, thanks. Where's the McCain/Palin Forum?
  21. Trout are a feral fish, do we get rid of them too?
  22. 2nd time out today with the new rifle. Last weekend I put 8 rounds thru it to rough zero in the scope. Put it on target in 6 and grouped the last 2 with about 2" spacing. This weekend at the farm, I backed the target out to 100 yards and started to zero. On the 12th round, the bolt locked up. I gave it a yank and the extractor came apart and the case stuck in the chamber. I was kind of disappointed in the new rifle failing so early. I popped the spent case out and found the culprit, blown primer. Looking at the other spent cases, number 9 had a blown primer too. Then I realized that I was using reloads from who knows. I had been given them with another rifle and assumed they were factory loads. Closer inspection reveals they were probably reloads due to multiple headstamps. I broke down the rest and tossed them. Luckily. I suffered no damage, the action contained the blast. I am sure Marlin will back up the extractor. Next step is to custom load some 150 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips of my own and carry on.
  23. I saw some at a local gun shop this weekend here in Cape Girardeau. Have your local gunshop order some with his normal weekly order.
  24. Great, we are coming over to fish Monday, putting in at Whitten and motoring up.
  25. Been about 3 weeks ago, caught some nice ones at Lasseter's across from the motel in town. I made a report.
