    What's Cooking?

I whipped this up a while back without a recipe. I think I was eating solo this night. I like this style better.
  6. I pulled the plug on the equities part of my 401(k) a week and a half ago. Got dinged but have a decent positive return over the last 5 quarters. Not really one to try to out guess the market because I don’t need the money for several years, but this is some scary chit.

Shrimp and grits tonight. ATK recipe that’s honestly not my favorite but liked by the party of the second part.

    What's Cooking?

It’s kinda funny all this hatred for peas. Growing up my mom would serve us LeSeur peas from the silver labeled can. Didn’t love them, didn’t hate them. Got married and Grandma Vi introduced me to creamed peas. Canned peas with a roux and a little of the juice from the can and some milk. I still love those and make them occasionally. But now it’s generally small frozen peas and they’re not cooked at all, just thawed or thrown in at the end. And, I like a split pea and ham soup. Now that I think about it I wish I had grabbed a bag of split peas for the quarantine. We’ve got the ham. Dang it. Love a good, tender, stringless snap pea or a snow pea in a stir fry or salad. Usually grow snap peas in my little garden. Now—canned Lima beans...
  9. This isn't any one country or industry. This is tearing through the entire world economy. Everything is interdependent. Stocks down 25-30% Oil down 50%. Worlds largest oil producer may notice that... Uncle Sam just told certain mortgage borrowers they don't need to make their payments. I wonder if banks will miss the cash? I could go on and on... No end in sight.

I agree and I’d also add I find it hard to hit that sweet spot. Probably need to do them more often to really get it great consistently.

    What's Cooking?

I hope we get a good one that’s also relatively simple. I love lobster bisque but most of the recipes I’ve seen are pretty complex. I get that sometimes you’ve got to go the extra mile for that really great dish, but I’d like to keep it simpler.

    What's Cooking?

I got nothing. I’ve still got my mom’s Betty Crocker cookbook somewhere. There’s got to be something with some Campbell’s soup mixed in, right? I’ll get back to you. 😄

You’ll never get it, so enjoy the sense of freedom your saying whateverthefudge you think gives you. Wouldn't mind too much if you quit again.

We all know you take pride in telling it like it is. No BS, we’re gonna get what you think, no whitewashing. We know this because you tell us all the freakin time. Ok. Here’s my equivalent: what an a##hole thing to say.
  15. Thanks. I do place some emphasis on aesthetics. Really getting the itch!! 70 degrees today, but 39 tomorrow though.
  16. Here's my small garden roster: Bean: Dragon Tongue, Kentucky Wonder bush Beet: Cylindra Lettuce: Forellenschluss, Red Salad Bowl, Slo Bolt, Tom Thumb, Webb’s Wonderful, Yugoslavian Red Pea: Sugar Bon Pepper: Jimmy Nardello, Sweet Banana Radish: Early Scarlet Globe, French Breakfast, Watermelon Swiss Chard: Fordhook Giant Tomato: Black Krim, Brandywine (Sudduth’s), Celebrity, Cherokee Purple, Gold Rush Currant, Sun Gold The only new things are the Gold Rush Currant tomato and Tom Thumb butterhead lettuce. Haven't done a currant tomato before. We like the little, sweeter cherries in certain applications. These are yellow/orange. Here's the description from Seed Savers Exchange: Gold Rush Currant Tomato (2020) (Solanum pimpinellifolium) Very early maturing variety with a heavy set of ¼” fruits borne in trusses of 10-12. Excellent tomato flavor. Sprawling growth habit. Indeterminate, 75-80 days from transplant. (SSE)

If I legitimately had an issue and met the requirements for disability I would apply and accept benefits with a clear conscience. That’s something we get here in the US, not to mention I’ve been paying into the system for 40+ years. Qualifying for disability doesn’t mean you can’t do anything. It takes different forms. I’ve got better stuff to do with myself than worry about who might be cheating the system.

    What's Cooking?

Scrambled eggs, diced ham, American cheese and just a little Swiss cheese too. Like my scrambled eggs pretty soft and creamy. Toast (some kind of artisan white loaf -- pretty good) and Kerrygold butter.

I'm 100% in favor of taking care of yourself and those who depend on you. But, I've had a bit of an epiphany in the the last few years. My wife teaches at an elementary school that has 75% free and reduced lunches (Independence, MO). That includes daily lunches, sometimes breakfast and 'back snack' packages that go home with them over the weekend. In more cases than you might expect these are the only real meals those kids will get. Is that right? Could the parents shift things around and focus more on providing? In many, maybe most, cases the answer is undoubtedly yes. But they don't, and if the handouts dry up the kids go hungry. It *is not* a 5 to 12 year olds responsibility to feed themselves. So, I don't like it but I do understand it. It's the byproduct of our national policy of providing. Her principal told her he ran into a kid one spring and asked if they were looking forward to summer. The kid said no...it just means I'll be hungry. Think about that... Kathy's take -- which permanently changed my viewpoint -- is this: There are parents that simply don't know how to parent. They weren't parented, and they don't know how to parent. Their parents got handouts, they get handouts, they expect handouts. They have no need to provide because it's always provided. They've been trained. I believe the longer the distance between the need and the provider the less personal and less responsible we become. If the federal government is going to give *me* something I'm going to take it every time, even if I don't need it. But, if I'm in need and it is coming from my neighbor, I'm going to think twice before I look them in the eye and take from them. Push this down to the local level and it will improve. Until we fix the national provider mentality I'm afraid we are stuck with this.

    What's Cooking?

Made some more beef broth from bones a few weeks ago. Froze that and made some soup from it over the weekend. With a Guinness tonight. Tastee!
  24. You need one of the long ones. Fill it up with water, spin it around so the bowl is down there and then blow. Hard. You’re welcome.
  25. May need to borrow a bong from @Mitch f😄
