But the Indians kept such crappy records. The occasional petroglyph, picture on pottery or legend is all we got. Meriwether Lewis kept some journals, but that was only about 200 years ago, and focused only on the Missouri River and surrounds. His spelling was horrible, and he wasn't too good at drawing pictures.

Yeah, not gonna get nearly as much heating effect from the hoops. But I start everything indoors and move it out when it warms up. Hoops go on naked and get covered when the temperature dictates. Are you starting seed or doing seedlings with the lettuce? How much clearance between the glass and the soil?

My raised beds are 4x4 and 8x4 -- two each for veggies, then a couple other for asparagus and raspberries. Are you using the just glass to warm things up? I've got some pvc hoops I can stick on when I need them for veggies.

Manure is good, but ideally it should be composted before you use it. It's a better soil amendment after composting, and it's less likely to have live weed seeds if your pile gets good and hot. Not sure what scale you're gardening on, but raised beds are a good option if you've got crummy soil and aren't talking too much space. Fill them with the best soil mix you can find, with lots of organic matter worked in. Make the beds narrow enough that you don't have to walk on the soil to reach everything -- about 4 feet wide. Between the good starting soil, plenty of organic matter and non-compacted soil, it will make a world of difference.

Last year was crummy. Real wet in the spring and then very hot for several weeks mid-summer. My peppers and maters shut down early August. Get them going indoors if you're doing it from seed; don't put them out until May 1 or later; keep them watered but not wet during the summer.

Beds are in great shape from the work I did last year. Got 5-6 different heirloom garlic varieties and some multiplier onions out there since fall. Tomatoes (Amish Paste, Cherokee Purple, Black from Tula, Brandywine, Celebrity), lettuce, peppers, herbs all started indoors last weekend. Another shipment of seeds in yesterday, need to get a few more things started. Need to get new plastic on the cold frame. Tomorrow's gonna be busy.

They really debated the issue hard, and considered several alternatives: giving the Japanese a heads up; dropping it on a rural area; not using it at all. They had a real sense of what it could mean for history and civilization. Truman faced all this stuff after just 82 days as vice president.

flyingfingercricketwrench, I think you've been taking it personally, and trying to turn it into a gun rights argument. I'll sum up my point, and I hope you'll take it for what it is, not what it could be: I don't see a need to carry when fishing because the risks are minimal.
