    What's Cooking?

Reminds me of this -- spotted in the store a while back. I just love the 'Good eating too...' slogan. Notice, they're not specific about good eating for what!
  2. You gotta write this stuff down, oneshot

    What's Cooking?

Made a couple servings of 'salad bar' gumbo last night. Green pepper, onion, celery, ham and chicken all from the local megamart salad bar. Chicken stock, paprika, thyme, cayenne, parsley, salt, pepper, Worcestershire, hot sauce. Tony Cachere's instant roux and some pre-cooked shrimp. Voila! 30-minutes, one pot.
  4. I see some of their stuff in the grocery stores up here. I think it's John Morrell. Never have bought any of it though.
  5. ...and Cub Scouts!
  6. Sounds like a great trip. I love the little streams and pocket water fishing. I haven't done much fishing on the lakes there, but I will say probably the most memorable fishing I ever had was on Lily Lake in RMNP. Massive hatch of little white mayflies started and I was in my canoe. Flies were everywhere, including my mouth. The fish were going after them with abandon, and you could pick out their trajectory and drop a fly in front. I had a few white dries, but none as small as the natural. At one point I laid my fly in the path of a cruising fish and a natural landed right next to it. He picked mine I believe there are good lakes and bad or even barren lakes, so it's best to do your homework first.
  7. Haven't seen Justin around here much. I know it's his busy season, but it's been longer than that.

    2016 Garden Thread

Pulled out the tomatoes, remaining leeks, onions and beets. Defeat. Pulled a bunch of carrots that are kinda stunted. Don't think I'll do carrots or onions again. Too good from the store to mess with. All that remain are peppers and pole beans. Did bring in about 10 banana peppers, but if the rest don't pick up I'll be pulling them too. Cubanelles, Anaheims and poblanos are too little to mess with. Beans have shut down, but they always seem to and then pick up later in the season. What a crappy year. I think my soil needs a rest and a big dose of compost. Will probably forego a fall garden.
  9. I love RMNP, but you do have to share. If you get out early it's not as bad. The worst is getting behind a big ol' freakin' motor home that wants to soak up the scenery without waiting for a pull off. I've only been during the summer months -- I suspect it will get a lot quieter in a couple weeks. Looking forward to a report.
  10. Nice spoelling, ness.
  11. The guy who put this thing together: Had his little grand daughter in there (she's hiding behind the smokestack). Had a boom box in there with the Thomas song going, plus a train whistle he'd blow every so often. Little girl said, 'It's a boat AND a train!' They just tooled up and down the lake in this thing. Kinda made my day -- too.

    What's Cooking?

Made a Colorado-style green chili last night. I call it Colorado style because I think they usually put tomatoes in it. Just a couple boneless pork chops, some canned green chilies, a jar of salsa verde, a can of stewed tomatoes, onion, garlic and chicken broth. Cornbread isn't on the diet, and neither is cheese, but I had to do it. Pretty tasty. No muss, no fuss.

    What's Cooking?

Good old Planter's Seed. Cool place -- like stepping back in time. Did you get it there or do they have it available elsewhere? The whole Amish thing has always intrigued me. I'd like to go Amish for a weekend just to see what it's like, but I don't think they'll let you do that.

Wow. I just don't see cayenne on watermelon.

    What's Cooking?

Split a small KC strip, local corn and maters and cottage cheese. Also, honey-glazed carrots from the garden. No, they didn't come from the garden honey glazed, I had to honey glaze them myself . The dawgs know that grill night is gonna result in some treats. They also have good manners and patience.

    What's Cooking?

Saw something about grilled watermelon. Did it with the remaining pork chop: Nope?

    What's Cooking?

I have brined pork chops before, but these chops were bone-in and had some fat. The thin, lean, boneless loin chops are easy to dry out.

    What's Cooking?

Yeah, he always had a level-headed no-nonsense approach to things. The corn thing really works. Not sure why, but it does. I had a dog and his name was Bingo!

    What's Cooking?

You know, I hear you on that -- and I was trying to avoid that. This one was thick, which helps, and I took it off at about 160 and let it rest. It was perfect. I hit it pretty hard with Montreal seasoning, and I really liked that. Haven't used that on pork before.

    What's Cooking?

A few years back, WayneSWMO posted a technique for shucking corn. It was new to me at the time. Microwave 3 minutes, cut off the stem end and squeeze out the cob. Works like a charm. Grill's been getting a workout due to the heat. Thick-cut pork chop with Montreal steak seasoning, zucchini with lemon pepper and silk-free corn on the cob. Easy, tasty, lo-cal, no mess.
  22. Read another article on this that claimed MO paid a lot less than other states too. Sure sounds like a powder keg.
  23. John Gotti's grandson...not a Yankees fan...not a Mets fan... Busted.
  24. I don't know anything about Nixon, or have an opinion on him. I know he's a democrat, but I don't care a hoot that. But it just tickles me to see a politician have to squirm
  25. Overworked public defender uses power to recruit any attorney in the state, and he picks Nixon
