BilletHead, that looks outstanding. I'm glad you posted it, because I love those flavors. Need to give that one a try. I clipped that recipe and saved it.

No cheese on this. The scallops and sherry make for a slightly sweet, creamy sauce that I love just the way it is. I forgot to mention, there's a dash of cayenne in there too
  4. Kansas Speedway
  5. Photos taken from my driveway this evening. I'm about 10 5.4 miles south of the racetrack, and it's race weekend. These two A-10 Warthogs have been circling over every few minutes for the last half hour or so.
  6. Here's about a weeks worth of asparagus, and this morning's radishes and lettuce. French Breakfast radishes (my favorite), Red Salad Bowl and Slo-Bolt lettuce. I'd better get to munching on this stuff -- CSA pickup day is Monday.
  7. I can sure see that. Everybody's got their favorite, then there's the hot fly they read about before they headed down to the river.
  8. Wow -- that's beautiful water. I don't usually think of that type of scenery when I think California. Congrats!

    What's Cooking?

I love shellfish and seafood. I had some frozen scallops, so I made one of my favorites -- Scallops Newberg. Sauté scallops, set aside. Add sherry and reduce; add in cream, bring up to nearly a boil. Add in egg yolks and whisk on low heat to get them cooked without scrambling. Add back in scallops and bring to temp. Serve over buttered toast. This one sounds pretty fancy, but it's really pretty basic and easy to do. The sauce is phenomenal.
  10. Funny how I'm sad at the passing of a guy I never met face-to-face, who I couldn't pick out of a line up, or who's voice I wouldn't recognize. Kinda makes me think I take too much stuff for granted.
  11. I noticed Wayne was absent in recent months. I always thought he had a good perspective on things, so I checked his status every so often. Seemed like he was checking in, so I let it go thinking he had other things going on. I think I checked within the last week or so. Wayne, thanks for your contribution here. Rest in peace, man. I hope the family and friends know he was a special voice here.

You can have my tat, OK?
  14. Celebrity is a great tomato. Disease resistant, good flavor, medium-sized fruit. I plant them every year.
  15. My raspberries and gooseberries are about on par with yours BH. That's because they don't depend on me.

Yeah, farmer's markets aren't always local food and they're not always farmers. We've also got a farmer with a roadside stand nearby that grows great corn and melons, but they also sell tomatoes and other stuff shipped in from elsewhere. I'm ok with that though -- that's just the way it is. This CSA will be delivering stuff I wouldn't buy on my own like eggplant, turnips, kale, etc. So, I'm gonna have to think out of the box a little and that's part of the appeal. Local grown and heirloom varieties -- I just kinda like that. Interaction with the people that are growing it -- I like that too. They're having a get together at the farm in a couple weeks -- I think I'll go.

  18. Looks like you can still order plants from Burpee or Territorial but that shipping.... Read the description and reviews on the Burpee site. They really are good. I've seen them at big box stores before.
  19. Cherokee purple is one of my favorites. I think we've got a cardinal nesting in the big spruce in our yard -- the other day I saw a momma fly right in a hole in the side like she knew right where she was going. Can't see the nest though. They're nice to have around. Plenty of robins and a few doves around, but I haven't spotted any nests. A dang starling built a nest just off our deck, about 10 feet off the ground in a birch. My bird dogs go out there and just sit there staring up at it. We had a family of foxes in the hood two years ago, and I was happy to see one the other night again. I hope they're back -- pretty cool to see. Cats, well, they belong to my neighbors so I just deal with them.

Well, ya missed the point there JD. Twice kinda.
  22. If you haven't picked out a cherry yet, my hands down favorite cherry is Sun Gold. Not an heirloom, but the best tasting cherry I've ever had. Kinda sweet/tart like a citrus fruit. Very prolific indeterminate plants. They're fairly easy to find.

Naw -- we fought on the winning/right side over here in the Free State! I smiled when I saw you replied, even before I read it JoeD. Still ciphering on your question, but the preliminary answer is 'No'. Get your eggs where you gotta, and get there however you can. Good call on the tats. I don't judge clothing unless it impedes normal bodily functions or mobility. Then I pretty much judge silently.
  24. Big Rainbows doesn't ring a bell. I grow Brandywines every year and know of Mortgage Lifter. German Queen is a new one to me. Brandywine are a pretty finicky heirloom in my experience, but have good size and great taste when things come together right.
  25. Well, the last of the little stuff is done. Herbs and a few Alpine strawberry plants I'd started are in the pots. Everything else has been in for a few weeks. We've had a lot of nights in the 40s, so things are not popping like they would if it was warmer. A little bit of rain here and there has helped though. So, here's my little garden at it's prettiest, with the dogwood blooming, green grass and the rose bush starting to blossom: I've been getting a nice harvest of lettuce and radishes. Succession plantings of those are well on their way and should follow the first planting nicely. Spinach was a bust -- can't seem to get that one right for some reason. Some critter has eaten off the leaves of my banana peppers -- they look like they'll come back, but they're gonna be set back quite a bit. A few of my maters struggled out of the gate because we had some cold nights and my tomato juice bottle cloches were a little too tight so the leaves got singed. They'll be fine, just behind. Oh well, it's always something. One variety of peas is thriving, and the other is stunted. Lots of onions, shallots and leeks this year. Garlic too. Beans -- bush and pole -- are on their way. Swiss Chard and beets are coming along.
