  1. Yeah, Baylor may actually fall out of a BCS bowl altogether with this. Oklahoma State now has the inside track for the Big 12 title, assuming they close this you. Of course, they still have Oklahoma next week so hold that thought. That could be a fun game. People are calling out Baylor, but Oklahoma State is a very good football team. To Mizzou-Franklin was very solid, and at his best on the ground. Very little rustiness, though he didn't do anything too eye-popping by his standards.. He didn't have to put the team on his back with a great running game and a defense that held their ground in the redzone. A&M is one of the biggest games in Missouri football history. Also big for Manziel, who has one last big chance to get the Heisman after the loss today to LSU.
  2. Tough, tough game against Ole Miss. I'm going Mizzou, 24-20, but with extreme reservations.
  3. Unless it's somehow Missouri, give me 'bama vs. Baylor for a truly fascinating title game. I'm not saying that's the most fair matchup, but it may be the most fun.
  4. That would be tough for OSU to potentially win 25 straight games and never play for the title in that span. Does it push them past FSU? It's hard to say, but you can't say the Buckeyes wouldn't deserve a spot if undefeated. It's all about whether the spot they deserve is available, and it probably won't be. It looks like the last year of the BCS could show why it's such a terrible idea in the first place. Ohio State is hurt in public perception because they're defense softens up when the get a massive lead-so it looks like they have a bad defense when they are really just resting starters late in the game and giving up points that way. That's how you get a 60-35 score against Illinois. Their defense was incredible for most of the game until it was basically so far out of reach for the Illini that it was pointless to keep going all out. Of course, OSU could lose to Indiana (LOL not happening) and Baylor could go down to Oklahoma State and all this chaos goes away, for the most part. But don't bet on it.
  5. The one thing that interests me with the selection committee is how they'll view strength of schedule. Will a team be okay with a soft non-conference schedule if they get quality wins in conference? If not, is a game against Indiana or NC State (or any other middle of the road major team) sufficient for a "marquee" non-conference game or does it need to be against a real contender? Does it matter if the game is at home, on the road or neutral? Are FCS (1AA) opponents so hurtful to SOS as to be off limits to title contenders? Because those are the types of things that, say, the selection committee for college basketball would consider. How different or similar will this process be? There are a lot of questions that even coaches and ADs probably don't have clear answers to.
  6. I agree, but yeah, Lynch is fun to watch. I have never seen one player account for a larger percentage of his teams offense. It's not enough to say that he's a running quarterback-he's essentially their top running back. I think he would be a great QB most anywhere but the rest of the team probably isn't enough as we saw against Florida State last year.
  7. I agree. And teams have seemingly figured out Boise State after they've spent a little bit too much time in the spot light. They still stomp their Mountain West counterparts (except Fresno) but they can't beat a top 25 opponent these days. I'm not sure they are much worse, I just think people started taking them seriously and they can't sneak up on anyone. Not to keep going after the smaller schools, but this year's crop is even weaker than Boise. The biggest win between NIU and Fresno is..........Iowa. The Hawkeyes are a decent Big Ten team, but you're probably not mistaking them for Alabama.
  8. Yes, this is a fantastic point. Plus we just played UCF last season anyway, and we beat them even with our 2012 outfit. I realize they are better this year, but that much better? I would have thought so before, but they did not look like a world beater against Temple. In my opinion, it's kinda silly that the AAC gets an autobid. I think one mid-major should get in to the BCS, but the way it is now two are almost certain to get in, between the AAC champ and the higher ranked of Fresno/NIU. But that will be the system starting next year.....where the "group of 5" gets one guaranteed spot including the AAC. As for Ole Miss-I think my prediction is a close Missouri win. But I'm nervous. It will depend a lot on how rusty Franklin is. I think it will likely be exciting and down to the wire.
  9. Yep, I would greatly enjoy it. Would probably require Baylor to fall to the Cotton Bowl though, which most likely means losing to Oklahoma State this weekend. Could see that happening, but I've now seen enough of Baylor to think they're on a path to a likely 12-0 record. I was not impressed with their early schedule but they've handled a serious uptick in difficulty beautifully. OU is a top 25 team and Tech not that far off. Baylor beat both pretty easily. If FSU or Bama loses, it will be interesting whether it is them or Ohio State in the title-but for entertainment purposes, I'd rather see Baylor and that offense. If they make it past OSU on the road this weekend they should be in excellent shape.
  10. The discussion about potential bowl games is heating up. A lot of SEC bowls could still go for Missouri, and of course the main factor is whether we win our last two games (and if so, whether we can at least hang with Alabama or Auburn.) But here's how I understand it..... Lose our last two to finish 9-3:likely a trip to the Gator Bowl vs a middle of the road Big Ten opponent. Worst case scenario would be the Music City Bowl to play a lower ACC team. But that would have to be considered pretty unlikely at this point. Vandy is eligible and will very likely be assigned to this bowl game in its hometown again. If we finish 10-2: This is where it gets real complicated. The Sugar Bowl opens as a possibility, if a few things fall our way, so in other words forget about it. The realistic options would be the Outback Bowl against one of the top Big Ten teams or the Cotton Bowl in all likelihood. The feeling is that even though the Cotton goes with a west team usually, the relative proximity of Mizzou to Dallas compared to the Florida games could send us that direction to play a Big 12 team. The Capital One Bowl is the likely best case scenario, which would probably be against Michigan State or Wisconsin (the top Big Ten teams that probably won't be in the Rose Bowl.) The Chick-Fil-A bowl (likely vs. Clemson, Duke, Miami, or Virginia Tech) is also possible. Win out and lose in the title game: It'll probably either be the Capital One, Cotton, or Outback. Probably not much different from the above scenario, again, with an outside shot at the Sugar Bowl. Win out and win SEC title: armageddon occurs, so no bowl game.
  11. I can hardly wait. But seriously, I appreciate you trying to help trout anglers out of our disorder that causes us to travel 1000 miles to chase after a footlong (if that) fish. But it's really quite hopeless. Once you are afflicted, it is a chronic disorder with no available treatment. It only continues to devolve until you find yourself kneeling along the banks of Blue Spring Creek desperately trying to dangle a Hare's ear nymph in front of a 4 inch long wild rainbow and cursing at no one in particular when you hook an overhanging tree instead.
  12. Yeah trout "purists" are kinda annoying. Honestly, if you are a true trout purist in Missouri, unless you live on the banks of the North Fork of the White or something you are gonna be miserable a lot. I spend 85% of my time chasing warmwater fish. But is there something special about that 15% that's spent trout fishing? Absolutely there is. Please don't ask me to explain it, but to me it's just somehow better. The only thing that's really close is stream smallies. But, when I say trout fishing, I don't mean all types of trout fishing. I mean fishing for wild trout on wild streams. And yes, I am including in that definition fished that were stocked a long time ago and have become wild over time, even though that's technically incorrect. But a stocker on the blue ribbon stretch of the Eleven Point is probably acting pretty wild by the time I hook into it. But real wild, streambred trout are better, and native brookies or cutts in their home range are enough to make me travel 1000 miles and hardly think twice about doing so to catch a few 8 inch fish. I am perfectly capable of having a good time chasing freshly stocked trout but it's a different kind of experience, little different than fishing for catfish on a warmwater pond, and basically you may as well approach it that way. Fun if you're on a pretty stream and the rest of the experience is good, but not usually worth it in its own right.
  13. The thing that surprised me was Peyton Manning staying upright all night long, as our offensive line had not doing great the past couple games. I thought that KC D-line would really knock him around. They have two weeks to figure it out, but hopefully Manning will be healthier by then. If you give Manning time forget about it. I seriously doubt they'll go without a sack in KC but they better not. The rest of the KC defense played pretty well, though. Holding Denver to 27 points gave KC's offense a legitimate chance to win the game. If they can do that again, maybe the offense makes enough plays next time. I think Eric Decker got that first down. He reached out I think pretty clearly past the line to gain before going out of bounds. But it may not have been indisputable. But to be real, it was fairly unlikely (though not impossible) that this called changed the outcome a whole lot anyway. It would have been an uphill battle down 2 scores with about 4 left. The end result is that we don't know a whole lot as far as how the division race will go. One of these teams will almost certainly be the 1 seed in the AFC playoffs, the other probably a 5 seed playing on the road from round one, and we have no idea which is which. All this does is make things very interesting for the latter part of the season.
  14. It was a hard fought game as expected. Chances are KC gets revenge in a couple weeks, but tonight was fun.
  15. Mizzou 3-0. Defense still pretty shaky, but the frontcourt (now with Criswell) looks 1000% better. Hawaii isn't a bad team, and overall a 12 point win is probably not the worst result. This team won't blow you away right now, but they are not messing anything up yet. That's important. Bad Novembers can hurt teams in March. They have IUPUI and Gardner-Webb (not cakewalks, but winnable) before a big stretch of games against major conference opponents, including Northwestern, Nevada (Mountain West is basically a major) WVU, UCLA, NC State, and Illinois. None of those teams seem unbeatable, but they may all be challenges. Mizzou doesn't have to win out in the non-conference, but they probably could do with beating NW, Nevada, and WVU (along with the games against smaller schools.) Then get at least 1-2 wins from UCLA, Illinois, and NC State. Overall 10-3 or 11-2 would probably be okay heading into SEC play if there are no bad losses. Anything better and we may set our sights higher than just making the tournament. The UCLA game may be our big chance for a win that could look really good. Lower than 10 wins before conference, and we may be in a rebuilding season. My prediction is 9-4. I think we're solid and will get a nice win or two, but I also think we trip up in a game we're favored to win. Watch out for Long Beach State. And yes, I insulted KU football earlier, so I'm probably obligated to point out that they won today. The streak was broken against the team that replaced Mizzou in the Big 12. Which is......ironic.
  16. Laugh all you want. I have one response: A recruit, to me is judged on performance, not hype coming in. We have a lot of 5 star recruits if you based it on that. Our record indicates such. I bet Texas or other area schools wished it had Michael Sam on the roster right now. But he was one of those low rated recruits, so he had to go to a lesser destination like Missouri to win more games than the programs that recruit better. Same with basically every non-DGB player on our roster. Yes, there are a couple highly rated recruits sprinkled in, and some of them are very good (Evan Boehm springs to mind) but they are very much the exception. This is a blue-collar, chip on your shoulder type of team, which is why their success is so fun to watch.
  17. Probably not, but they sure looked good against Indy. Maybe be able to get to 8-8 which wouldn't be half bad given how they started. NFC west is scary. Seattle may be the best team in the league and both San Fran and Arizona look like playoff caliber teams. Rams never had much of a chance.....a division can't send four team to the playoffs.
  18. I'm happy to see 4 star guys picking Mizzou, because it is good publicity. But on the field I don't think it matters even a little. I really think Pinkel's 2 and 3 star recruits are better than most 4 stars that other schools are getting. He has a special eye for talent and he can coach them up better than most. He recruits guys for his system that often don't match up with what the recruiting services value. Outside of DGB, most of the guys fueling our run this season are 2 and 3 stars that "big time" schools wouldn't have looked at. Many of them will play on Sundays. I could care less if we're last in the SEC recruiting ranks every single year, honestly.
  19. But you're pointing out precisely what I was getting at. You probably wouldn't want to eat a cuttie out west, because they are native. And certainly not a brookie out east, which are doing even worse in their home range. That's why western brookies are so good-they come pretty much guilt free, one of few such fish this side of bluegill.
  20. Now that depends. A hatchery rainbow is only alright. But a brookie from a high mountain stream in Montana......few things are better.
  21. It's one of those things. You either already know or me explaining it won't help. I have tried, with my writing, to do so, but in the end it's pretty useless. Either you love chasing after shiny 5 inch minnows or you don't. I guess there is no right or wrong answer. But I have a pretty good idea which is more fun. But I get it. I basically don't post fishing reports anymore, because frankly, no one cares if I catch a bunch of 5" trout or smallies and I can understand that.
  22. I'm a bit surprised they even publish it as news when Alabama gets the #1 recruit. It should probably just be assumed in advance that they will. Let's look on the bright side; I'd rather have the #1 recruit compete against my team in the SEC than have him go to Michigan a d give the Big Ten something to brag about. I'd rather Alabama go on with it's dynasty than see that conference take the reins, honestly.
  23. I think a lot of people aren't fired up for Mizzou hoops because people are still focused on football with us being good this year, and lower expectations with the loss of some players. But yeah, it'll still be fun most likely, if a little up and down. Also, I think a lot of people get bored with the early schedule in basketball being what it is, and it's hard to blame them. It'll kick into gear once they head to Las Vegas to play some major conference (and Mountain West) competition. Nevada and Northwestern aren't likely to be world beaters but they will challenge this team. Also, West Virginia and UCLA could be a pretty fun one two punch over a couple of days coming into Mizzou Arena. I hope to make it to the West Virginia game, which seems markedly more likely to be a Mizzou win. These are two real, high quality home games out of conference for Mizzou, something that has been a bit lacking of late. It's good to see power programs coming here a couple times a season outside of SEC play.
  24. Yeah, both of them.
  25. Their football fans didn't get the memo though.
