  1. oh well, a month and not one bite on the topic. I guess I'll let you know if anything I have in my possession works out when I get back in town.
  2. not making light of this, but it CAN kill ya!
  3. Hey Bittle, good question:) I have a scan of the paper that was included with all the gear that lists the makes/models of the vehicles it will work with. I think the majority of them have factory installed roof-racks that this will replace. I will attach the photos of the scans, its not the greatest resolution, but the best I could do (I tried to resize the pics, sorry I couldnt figure out how to make it any smaller, I know its annoyingly large!). Another option, if you go to www.thuleracks.com you can select the type of vehicle you have and it will tell you the different options for your car (its a little box near the top of the page). Unfortuntely I dont see the Galant listed on this page. Thanks for the inquiry though!
  4. Recently sold my Explorer and got a new vehicle with a new canoe rack, so i've got a real nice Thule setup gathering dust in my attic. I posted it on Craigslist.com, figured I'd add a link here since I know a lot of floaters visit this site. Drop me a PM or an email if interested, local pickup only please (wayyyyy too heavy to make shipping a feasible option, I'm in South STL near Tower Grove Park). http://stlouis.craigslist.org/spo/352129379.html
  5. I landed this "monster" on the Eleven Point back in April of this year Hammered a shadrap in a deep backwater pool that looked like some great smallmouth habitat. I was pretty surprised when I pulled him up. I've caught numerous others on (I think) the Jack's Fork, might have been the Current? They were nailing a brown curly tailed grub on a jighead. They can get a pretty decent size. Worst thing about them is their randomness, I lost quite a few lures that trip due to my line breaking clean when I would set the hook, most likely a pickerel's teeth. It can make for some frustration. I have a buddy who seems to have a knack for catching them, always has one or two in his weekend photos. Catches a lot of them on 4" worms on a jighead. Never really know where they will pop up:) They seem to be omnipresent on the streams we float. (11 Pt, Jack's Fork, Current, Black)
  6. Heading up to Northern Wisconsin, Hayward to be exact, in just over one month. We'll be fishing Lost Land Lake and Teal Lake, "The Quiet Lakes" for a week. Hoping to catch my first real large musky this year, ended up getting skunked on them last year, our first trip up there. Caught some large pike and a zillion fat largemouth once we had em patterned, but we didnt go up there to catch bass;) They had record temperatures, combine that with crystal clear shallow water and you've got some tough fishing. Landed my first 2 tiger musky a couple weeks ago at my wife's grandmother's lake after 3 unsuccessful years of chasing them. One Fri night and one Sat afternoon! Nothing too fancy, first one was probably 7lbs and the 2nd closer to 5, both on 6" swimbaits in about 4ft of water... My real goal for this trip to Wisconsin is a flyrod musky, which is going to be a challenge seeing that I cant even land one or raise one on my regular rods. I'll also settle for a pike, just want to catch something large and toothy that I havent landed on a fly yet. I've got some large streamers and rabbit strip divers, mostly black, one chart. and one white as well. I have a ton of big bass poppers and frogs also. Can anyone suggest anything I should pick up before heading back up North? Just picked up some nice wire leaders and pretty much just want to top off the big fly box w/ something they big guys may be interested in. I'd appreciate any suggestions you guys may have! Thanks in advance
  7. I managed to catch not only my first cat on the fly, but 7 total for the weekend at my friend's farm in Center, MO. Obviously, there was some food thrown out that stimulated the feeding, I had no real intentions of even going after them, I had a large black bass popper on my rod that I was tossing for the largemouth...great time killer! Let me tell ya, it was a blast! Those cats are a lot smarter than I envisioned. They would check it out everytime I plopped it into the water, you could see the big fish slowly creeping up from below. 99% of the time they'd come RIGHT up to it and flare at the last second and give it a nice tailwhip and boil up the water. It sure was a lot of fun to watch regardless of them taking the popper or not. They seemed to be using their sense of smell/taste more than their vision, many of them would stick their heads up and slowly swim towards it trying to locate it via smell, almost like a carp slurping off the top of the water. Good times, great way to break in my new 8wt rod:) Spent more time messing around with them than the bass! They sure can burn out some line when they finally realize they are hooked! Still looking for that first flyrod card, one of these days...
  8. I was working at a golf course many years back when there was a big hatch. I can say from experience that something in the sound of a small motor (for example, a backpack leaf blower) must be the sound of love to a lonesome Cicada. They beeline directly at you and will not leave you alone! A cicada at top speed smacking into the side of your head or face hurts a lot more than you might imagine... I hated that summer for a few months. I've already stocked up the tackle box in preparation for this summer wth some cicada jitterbug type lures from Bass Pro. I think they'll be worth it when the time comes.
  9. NIce fish man What fly did you get him to take? Still havent had my opportunity to make some casts to one, its killing me too, never thought that catching a friggin carp would be at the top of my list Heading up to the inlaw's this afternoon in N. IL, granny's got a lake loaded w/ pike and big bass, few muskies cruising around too. Definietly will post any pics of anything worthwhile on the flyrod. Nice catch JJ!
  10. amazed to see all the Spreadheads on here! Cheers to friends so near!
  11. I think one of the other threads on this forum said they had to push it back this year for some reason.
  12. most likely the problem was behind the rod I was kind of going for the smallmouth and hoping for a chance trout, not all that experienced on the trout though.
  13. Hey Brian~ nice to meet you this past weekend, thanks for the advice and the flies. We stopped by after our float on Saturday afternoon, took a shower. I hope you found that $5 I stuck in the door, didnt know if that would still be there or not:) Wish the fish would have cooperated for me a bit more, but I wasnt expecting too much. thanks again!
  14. thanks Kenjenmo, I'll keep that in mind. What do you suggest as a topwater bait if one was to target gar specifically? Probably a question that doesnt get asked often! I've only hooked into a few on accident. I assume some sort of leader would be in order as well? As for consumption, after the smell I caught wind of there last time, you couldnt pay me to eat anything out of there, no idea what the heck that chemical would have been, def something unnatural. Should be checking it out in a week or so, still waiting on that camper to arrive from the factory. I'll be sure to post a report and some pics if I can pull anything out.
  15. good to know! Hope to check it out soon, waiting for the campershell to come in for my new truck so I can haul the canoe, will try it out ASAP!
  16. I've heard this is a good spot for carp and gar fishing, from a decent source. Anyone have any experience fishing here? Any idea how the bass fishing is? Last time I was there the water was quite nasty and had a really terrible chemical smell...probably perfect for carp! LOL. Anyways, just figured I may try it out one lazy weekend day. Would appreciate any info/comments! Thanks in advance. Also, I'll probably be fishing from a canoe, so all of the water would be accessible if that makes any difference. Cheers.
  17. Definitely give it an effort to get out on the 11 Point! Last April was my first time floating it w/ some friends, simply the most beautiful trip I've done so far in MO. Wide water, beautiful color, lots of wildlife and fish. Didnt do nearly as well as I'd have like on the fishing, but i did manage a couple nice rainbows. Only downside was nearly losing our lives in a NASTTTTY thunderstorm at the campground, but we made it out in one piece:) Can't wait to go again this April, already got it planned.
  18. i know various folks, myself included, have sent emails to MDC and World Bird Sanct. I didnt get a response from any of them, so I shot an email to the Audubon Society based in that area, still no reply. Maybe nobody cares about them anymore? Seems like a shame to me, but I was raised on the belief that they were on the verge of extinction...guess its just natural selection at work. At least there's a juvenile in the nest I guess.
  19. i'll fwd to MDC also.
  20. i got a great deal on mine at ORS Racks. http://www.orsracksdirect.com/kayak-canoe-racks.html
  21. Nice to hear the Busch lakes are producing. Struck out a couple times there last year, made a few trips down for some trout as well as a run to #33(?) that has Muskies stocked in it. No success in either lake, went on a really nasty day w/ tons of wind. I've got a decent selection of the Bead head pheasant tails, so I'll prob give that a shot on my first run this year. Too busy whacking ducks in Dexter MO this past weekend and I'll be gone to Paris MO this coming weekend for more ducks and opening day of deer season. Hope to get on the water soon though:) Keep the ideas coming if you have any more to offer!
  22. Thanks for all of the suggestions, guys! I'll def give them all a try this upcoming season. As I was saying in my first post, I'm really just a bass fisherman that loves using a flyrod. I'm quite a novice when it comes to, well, flies in general, and of course, fly sizes. I'd say the wooly bugger I was using was probably too big, I get a lot of my flies from a buddy who ties his own trout flies and he'll whip up some bigger versions for my bass addiction or for specific float trips (very nice of him). I got a nice new rod for my birthday from my old man, so I'll be better suited for the lighter tackle/lines, I'm generally "beefed up" for bass poppers around cover. The city areas i frequent are the forest park lakes (I work across the street) and Carondolet Park's "Boathouse" lake. Wind is normally prevalent, so maybe the indicators suggested would be a good idea... Thanks again for all of the great suggestions. I always enjoy posting on this site, its wonderful to get a factual, helpful response from people. Many of the other sites I visit will give you plenty of heckling and misinformation instead of just trying to help out. I sincerely appreciate the tips! I'll be sure to post a pic of my first "trophy" when it happens. I dont think the MDC agent that checked my permits last year believed me when I told her I was just taking pics of anything if I caught it instead of taking it home to eat...I saw more people ticketed around those lakes for lacking permits than anywhere by a longshot. The odds of being checked seem to be pretty high, which doesnt bother me in the least. Glad someone is keeping the "cheaters" in check!
  23. I know this topic is probably taboo to most of the diehard trout folks around here, but I figured I'd ask anyhow. I live in South STL city and live faily close to a few of the parks that Mo Dept of Cons stocks during the winter trout season. I'm mainly a bass fisherman, but I love to fly fish and gave my best efforts last winter to no avail. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions for flies to use to catch these stocked trout? Everyone, EVERYONE uses powerbait or something like that whenever I'm there, and I see lots of fish being hauled in. I've tried some wooly buggers and used some spinners w/ my light spinning rod (caught a nice fat largemouth, which was a nice surprise), just cant catch a darn trout. Only trout fishing I have done has been in rivers, lots of current...what should I throw at them in a stocked city lake w/ no current, is there anything that'll work aside from "cheating" and using powerbait? I dont want to stoop that low Thanks for any advice, feel free to just PM a reply if you dont want to expose yourself as one who also chases these lowly "dumb" stockers. Its all I can really get to in winter. thanks! MO Fishwater
