  1. Amen... Well said. Let's just agree to disagree and go fishing...
  2. Dang... I KNEW I left it somewhere... Just kidding... But I do hope the owner is on here and the rig finds its way home...
  3. Wayne... Not every cattle farmer "times" the calving season. They let the bulls run with the herd all the time. So, any time is calving time. Growing up, we had cows calving all year. (Not that it is the best practice...) He didn't need an excuse... All he would have needed was a backhoe or a shovel and some elbow grease. I think calling the MDC after the kill says a lot, but then, as I say, I don't know. I wasn't there.
  4. OK... First of all, I see a lot of "assume," "think," and "what I'd do.". Sorry, but we were not in the farmer's shoes. Second, I respect all your opinions in principle, but there are some very weak arguments here in MY opinion. I agree to disagree with those I disagree with and will leave it at that. May we all live on tofu and have a Mt lion in every yard...
  5. Apparently, there is more to the story than what is in the paper/media...
  6. First of all, Stone, if you grew up on a cattle farm, you should know that while cows weigh 800-1200 lbs. (according to breed and other factors) newborn calves weigh 70-100 lbs and are very vulnerable in the first few days of life. And while a 1200 lb cow would be very protective of her newborn calf, a 150 lb cougar can do a lot of damage to her and the calf. And secondly, "...inconsiderate murderer who has zero respect for the natural world around me and who KILLS a wild animal that is not going to be consumed for food..."???? As I said, I wasn't there, so I will NOT JUDGE HIM! Murderer? Really? Strong language... The only predator we need to worry about on a farm is human? I suppose you used no pesticides to kill the poor innocent insects that sucked blood and spread disease in your herd or ate your crops. Ever find a newborn calf half eaten by a pack of coyotes? Inconsiderate? No respect for the natural world? Again, strong language judging someone you do not know. "Contradictory position?" I don't think you understand that statement. We don't own anything on this earth except ourselves. I agree with the principle you are trying to articulate, but give up all your material goods and I'll accept your statement as is. I'm willing to bet if someone were trying to steal your car, you wouldn't just stand around and say "oh well... I don't own it anyway." I'm not necessarily advocating we go out and kill every animal we see that we don't "like" for whatever reason, but at the same time, radical behavior to "protect" nature can sometimes do more harm than good. Human intervention, such as re-introducing a species, is good in principle, but not necessarily a good thing in all cases. PETA is a great example of human intervention that does as much harm as good in some cases. Sorry, but I AM a sportsman. And I'm sure you are. I think we actually agree in principle on this issue. I just am of the opinion that the details are different.
  7. Nice tie, Jeff... Good luck with it!
  8. Lots and lots of small children too... Would this qualify as an invasive species? Wonder what would have happened if this cat had been treed in the back yard full of small children and house cats? Pathetic? I disagree... Not so much that the guy should have shot him on the spot, but then again, I wasn't there, so I won't judge. This farmer makes a living from his cattle, or at least tries... Protecting his livestock is a high priority. Been there, done that. A small calf is $100 or more in his eyes with a potential for more. JD has a good point... We want all this "nature" but we want our "civilization" as well. The balance is tough, if not impossible, to attain. I think we should walk a mile in the farmer's moccasins before we criticize...
  9. "Do you think your parents will accept a mixed marriage?" "Put your fin on my... oh yeah... that's it... right there!!!" "Who the hell is DORY?!?!?!?!?"
  10. Speaking from a fly fishing standpoint, fishing big streamers works for big trout. I've seen people using big Rapalas catching big trout too...
  11. And don't forget the Doritos... That would be fine. Maybe some Coke and Dt Coke for some? What time is everyone planning on showing up? I'll be there at the crack of 10am...
  12. First, welcome to the forum... Second, I think there is a demand for barbless hooks that the major hook manufacturers and distributors are missing. Among fly tiers, I'd like to know the percentage of hooks used that have the barb "smashed" before fishing. The first step I take in tying a fly is to pinch the barb down before I put it in the vise. Those hooks you are using for your flies are pretty neat and interesting.

  15. Already had one Christmas with Cindy's family. Usually we have a big dinner of prime rib cooked by my MIL. This year, due to some remodeling work on her house, we opted to go out to a local Japanese steakhouse. Then, back to "Grandma's" to watch my three year old granddaughter open EVERYONE'S presents... That was a hoot... Now, we're leaving this afternoon for my hometown. Christmas morning is always breakfast at my sister's house with quail, biscuits, and gravy on the menu - been that way for over 50 years. Then open presents, and sit around and visit. Use to be, this was a big deal with lots of cousins and neighbors coming over, but this year it will be just five of us - my mom, sister, BIL, Cindy, and me... One tradition a few years ago when my cousin lived away, he and I would get together in the afternoon and "tour" the home area catching up on who had moved where and telling stories from the past. We've come back full of Christmas cheer a few times doing that... Ah the old country backroads of years ago... Can't do that anymore.
  16. Happy Birthday FC... Hope it's a good 'un...
  17. Jack... as with all flies, yes and yes... Go to http://www.itinerantangler.com/podcasts/video/ and watch Zach's video on how to tie it... Or go to most any fly shop in the Ozarks to find them...
  18. I agree that you are choosing between two waders with problems. Of course, I'm going to be prejudice and suggest Hendrix Outdoors waders. For less than the cost of Simms, you can have the same wader material-wise.
  19. Jerry... welcome to the forum, fly fishing, and the NAFF. I'm not a member of that club, but know a lot of the members and they are a part of the Federation of Fly Fishers Southern Council of which I am a board member. I'm sure you know of the Sowbug Roundup coming up in March, so be sure to attend that one. You will learn a lot about fly tying there for sure. I'll be tying at that event at some point myself. But as a member of NAFF, you have a host of fine fly anglers and tiers at your disposal for sure. Come on over to Taneycomo and join us for a lot of fun with the fly rod. We'd love to have you come New Years Day and introduce yourself to some of the members of this forum at our annual freezing cold windy got to be stoopid to be out there fishing and potluck lunch... LOL Any questions about fly fishing or fly tying, just ask. Of course, expect about 30 different answers to the same question... LOL You are in a great White Bass location and Whites on a fly rod are more fun than a person should be allowed to have. It's getting time to get your fly tying mind on White Bass flies, so stay tuned.
  20. "Room for improvement"?... Maybe a little... but not much... Great video... Keep up the good work!!!
  21. What clubs and what fly shop do you work with in Columbia? That's one of the keys is to get with them. They can help you with one on one instruction and give you some help and guidelines for youngsters. The key is to get the young ones ON THE WATER and catching fish to really up their interest. Even if he can't cast that well, if he can get a few fish in, it will stir up his desire to learn more...
  22. No man understands women even THAT well... 80% for me... Don't take it too seriously. This was a marketing scheme for TU to get their name out more and maybe glean some members and/or donations. Nothing more. But it was kind of fun and interesting.
  23. Nice pheeshes!! Thanks for the report...
  24. Jasper... They've done some cleaning of the beds in each hole. The water was clear - barely stained from the rain. I hope you're having a good day there today...
