Sounds logical enough....

This is a question I have always been curious about: why aren't more people fishing the Current River at night like they do Taneycomo? I'm terrified that the answer is going to be obvious, so if it is, please forgive my ignorance in advance. But I love reading the night fishing reports from Taneycomo, and I don't think I have EVER seen one about the Current. I always pack up my stuff at sundown, too. If you do fish the Current at night, what parts? And do you throw big streamers? I know from Gavin's posts that he gets there before the sun comes up, but I'm talking about the guys who are out there at 1 and 2 am. Jim

Leonard- I love reading your reports. Can you please tell me what your set-up is when you use the hibernators? ie sink tip line? floating? split shot? cast quartering down? Wait while the fly sinks? Mend up/down stream? Sorry for the bombardment of questions, it's just that I have a lot to learn! Jim

I read the Steig Larrson trilogy (The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest). The first 50 or so pages of the Dragon Tatoo are BRUTAL, but if you can trudge through it, it picks up steam and becomes a page-turner. The other two are awesome as well. I highly recommend.

I'm with you, Snap. Seriously, I know he was a charitable donor to many in need. However, he could STILL have done that with the Cardinals offer. You're telling me that he's going to donate the extra $50 million from the Angels to charity? He's going to donate MORE? I doubt it. I bet a dollar to donuts that his charitable contributions do not increase, given the high California tax rate and cost of living. It'll be a wash. Oh well, he was getting fat anyway, and his production was down over the last 3 years. Still great numbers, but with the HGH testing next year, they will decline even more.

For such a "Christian", he sure has an inflated ego and a love of money. I honestly don't begrudge him going for as much $$ as he could, but please don't lie to us and say "it's not about the money". Just say, "He who pays me the most will get my services." Then I'm fine, because it's honest. The Cardinals just made a VERY wise move, and they will still draw 3 million fans. I'll be one of those 3 million now. I wouldn't have if they signed Pujols to an outrageous contract.

I'm a huge Cardinal fan, and I'm so happy to see him go. He was a fraud. He didn't run out ground balls, and I don't think he played very hard. It's hard to go to a game and watch him lollygag down the basepaths. I've coached baseball for 14 years, and it sickens me to see him lollygag and then kids idolize him. Good writtence.....

I was fishing there on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. I was completely shut out for the first time in a LONG time. I threw egg patterns like crazy, too. The only hit I had was on a tiny BWO. Between 3 of us, we had one fish. It was awful, and the conditions were great: rain the day before, overcast, etc. It was tough.

Don't do it, Justin! LMFAO, LOL, etc..... all these abbreviations need to go! You were a cool guy when I met you whilst camping at your place last year....don't go to the dark-side.

If you drive past the Tan Vat access, you'll see a sign for a campground (and a sign for a Civil War Battlefield". Not sure if they're open---Ozark Mountain Ranch is the name i think....

It's been a LONG while since I have been fishing on the Current...probably since early summer. Considering I'm a teacher and am off all summer, it is nearly criminal that I have fished so little over the summer. That's what a 6 month old and a 4 year old will do to you. I now have a free pass tomorrow afternoon into Saturday morning and I want to camp on the river. My plan is to park at Baptist, hike down the access road to the river, hike down to the sand bar on the S curve, set up camp, and then night fish with streamers. I have never solo camped, and I have never night fished. From the forcast, I don't imagine they'll be any flash flood dangers. Does anyone have any tips/tricks to night fishing the Current or solo camping information? I am not allowed to camp at the Baptist access, correct? Seems odd that I can hike down and camp, but I can't camp there. Any ideas why? Or am I wrong and camping is legal at that access? Thanks for any and all help. Jim

Either river is amazing and the boys will have a great time. If you fish the Current, you can use many of the same flies Brian mentioned above. I save the small stuff for winter time. You cannot go wrong at all on the Current with beadhead pink egg patterns bounced on the bottom. Eggs have saved MANY days for me on the Current. I have no shame in fishing them! I would use a Pat's Rubber leg trailed by a pink egg. Or, for spin fishing, tiny crawdad cranks or jerkbaits. Brian helped my wife and I successfully fish the 11 Point 2 years ago, so I'd listen to every word he says if you decide to go there. Best of luck, and have fun! Jim

Wow, a 6 lb brown??? Awesome! I didn't think they got that big on the Current!!

Thanks for the report! It's funny because I haven't seen a rising fish down there the last three times I went down. Perhaps it's the time of year, time of day, etc. It seems as if they are either all rising or none rising on that river. Hardly anything inbetween, in my experience. Feast or famine.

That wasn't me, but you're right, the fish were aggressive

I fished yesterday below Baptist Camp, and the river has changed quite a lot. It was about 170cfs and the water was really moving. Off colorfor sure, and the further you got from the access, the dingier it became. I hooked into a few at the access point and 50 yards downstream. I drifted an olive wooly and dropped an egg off of it. Equal catch on each fly today (also used a golden stone later in the day). Being the moron that I am, I forgot my fly fishing pack (man-purse, as my wife calls it) because I was so anxious to get on the road. I fed the newborn, grabbed my stuff, and forgot my bag---$40 poorer as I left Montauk lodge with new flies. But the changes to the river were significant, though it was still high and tough to determine what the end result will be. Here are the highlights: The fist big hole below the access has dramatically changed. The trees along the bank are all gone (or laying there dead). You can actually wade right to the hole without having to get on land or hugging the bank like in years past. That shallow riffle before the hole has grown in size 3-4 times what it used to be, and now there is a deep run on the opposite bank just above that big rock. Those familiar with the Current probably know what spot I'm talking about. If not, let me know and I'll try to explain better. The other deep hole just about 20 yards down from the first one is roughly the same. The river was very deep from this second hole through that run (the one where the access road drops you off at the river by the old tire---which is still there somehow). This run was almost unfishable because of how fast the water was moving, but I did manage one nice rainbow by that log there, as usual. That is always a gimmie fish there. Below that, at the S bend (I think that's what it's called), the leaves that used to be there in the water are all gone (finally), and that stretch seemed largely the same otherwise. The riffle below it has changed significantly, as it was moving more to the right than the bank side as before. The major change came at the horshoe bend before you hit the bluffs on your way to Ashley Creek. You couldn't easily cross there, and I almost had my first dunking there. On the bank, once across, you can see how much that hole changed. A lot of debris moved around, creating some slack water areas for those of you who like to target browns. Navigating through the woods there was tough with all the downed trees and new vegetation. Caught a few as I got to the bluffs, but the water was too stained and fast to keep going. I had to stay on that bank all the way until the S bend as it was not safe to cross where I did before. I was bushwacking to say the least. Long story short---the river has changed a lot. I still caught about 9 or 10 rainbows and an 8 inch brown. Great day, but tiring from the wading/bushwacking. Jim

I did it once with my friend's dad who was a fisheries biologist specializing in spoonbill. You drift a boat and rig up a LARGE treble hook. Cast it out with a big rod and reel, let it sink to the bottom, and then start ripping it through the water. You're scraping bottom to try and hook these massive fish as you rip your hook through the water. It's exhausting. They only eat stuff that's nearly invisible, so no bait will catch them---at least to my knowledge.

Glad you had a good time, Gavin! More importantly, the girls sound like they had fun from your other post.

Here's another thing I found interesting---the US government said that they gave Bin Laden a funeral and "eased" his body into the sea. My a*s they did!! They have him somewhere secretive where all the SEALS are having some fun with it. This much I guarantee you---he was NOT put in the Arabian Sea.

The guys at Hargroves told me that when the Montauk guage is at 200 cfs, the water is "moving"---i.e. fast. But, I have fished it when it was "moving" before, but rarely had success. That's just because I suck at streamer fishing. So, long story short, it will be fast, way off color presumably, but not necessarily "unfishable". There you go....clear as mud, eh? Have a blast and report with pics of the water....I'm dying to see it. Jim

Here's a list of managers with the highest winning percentages: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Major_League_Baseball_managers_by_wins Not "wins", mind you. Winning percentage. He's awful----and everyone looks at his wins vs win %, which is more indicative of a good manager. I cannot stand him. Now I'm mad again....thanks stlfisher. I'll Be Here On May 6Th, 7Th, 8Th...patterns?
jah replied to Texan Fisherman's topic in Montauk State Park
Looks like you have a nice selection in mind. If the water is up, I would add San Juan worms and lots of split shot to get your flies down. I have tons of success with pink colored eggs, size 10ish I think. 10 or 12. Probably too early for hoppers and such, but maybe a beetle? Have a blast! Jim -
I can't stand LaRussa. There, I said it. I think he thinks he's a freaking guru, when he complicates everything and has completely conflicting game plans. To wit: the first game of the series, late in the game, bases loaded, Larussa played for 2 up the middle and got the DP to end the inning. 9th inning same exact siuation, this time he brings the infield in. If they're back, another 6-4-3. Instead, game over on rbi hit. Why change? Why stick with veterans when the youngsters are ready to play? Why allow Albert and Yadi to jog out ground balls to first yet preach " a hard nine"? Anyone else notice that Albert "hurt" his hammy on a play where they threw wide to first base??? Had he have been sprinting, he would have been safe on a throwing error. Instead, he KNEW he should have been sprinting, and then made the excuse about "hurting himself". It's ridiculous. Tony needs to go, and I'd love to see Jose Oquendo take over. Or just put an inanimate cone in the dugout so we don't have a manager "overthinking"....and I use the term "thinking" lightly. darn, who started this???? My day is now ruined....when will the Current be fishable so I can participate in a different forum???

Any Knowledge On How The Floods Will Affect The River?
jah replied to Nortrad's topic in Current River
i think I caught the same fish...right against the bank. also saw a PIG in there last time i was there, and that was after it became shallow. still a good hole, though not as nice as before.... -
Any Knowledge On How The Floods Will Affect The River?
jah replied to Nortrad's topic in Current River
Nortrad- Are you referring to the hole below the 'island' a few hundred yards downstream from tan vat access? the one where you could fish against the grassy bank whilst standing in the middle of the river, with another deep hole behind you? if this is the one you're referring to, I too recently noticed how shallow it had become. weird...i think i mentioned it in one of my fishing reports. can't remember, but this river does change a lot. I like it...keeps it interesting. Jim
