Jordan Tobar caught this little fellow on the Current River last week. It was released to play again. Jordan didn't weigh the fish but by looking at it I would guess it at 3# and about 10". I know someone will see it as smaller. Taken on fly and 5X tippet.

OH! I forgot to mention the two guy's in the jet boat that were kind enough to run their boat with in 20 foot of me two times. That made the bass bite. LOL

Try-ed to fish at outlet #1 Saturday. The Key word is Try-ed. The water was up to the last step and there were about 6 anglers gathered up on the outlet. They were catching fish on just about anything that hit the water. I was able to squeeze in about 10 yards below the outlet and roll cast a midge out about 20 feet. Caught 3 and missed two Then there was a guy came down to the dam side of the outlet and started free drifting as spin cast rig down river. Then my cast was not touching the water because of being on top of his line, he was free drifting almost 30 yards below me. After loosing 2 flies and tippets because of the tangles on his 10lb line and no hint of him not doing it anymore. I moved up river to about 100 yards below the dam. was able to cast and fish there for awhile I only caught 2 Largmouth bass and one little brown trout. The rain started coming down and the wind blow hard. I moved towards the car and decided to try the outlet again because some people had gone to the house. I managed to make one cast before the same guy with the opinion he owned the river from outlet 1 to the Landing. I broke off again and the guy did say he was sorry, I agreed with him and packed up and called it a day. I mentioned to one guy that it was just about like Trout Park Fishing. He just laughed. I guess wverywhere has it's guy's that make the day go by faster.

Welcome:) Was the Bass Pro stuff for a surprise gift for the hubby? If so I would bet after telling him about this forum the surprise is blown. Better get bask to Bass Pro and get some more goodies.

They are located just off 63 Highway Just across the Spring river Bridge and about 50 yards south of the Old Goose neck station. Turn right down the bank & your there. They would be on the East side of the river. Or Highway side.

The Mammoth Spring Fly shop is kind of new to the area. It's ran by a family of great honest Ozarks folks. The shop is not the largest Shop by any means, but they have the flies and tackle that you need to catch the trout. They aren't fancy but they are trying to introduce fly fishing to the upper Spring River. The area they are in is above all the canoe traffic and partying the river is known for. They have cabins and camping at a great price. Bill Traw & his wife Patty will make your trip well worth while. If you are in the area please stop in and help this little shop become the place to go when fishing the Spring River. They have no web page except FaceBook but all the information is on that page. Look Foe Mammoth Spring Campground. Mammoth also has Fred's Fish House for the best Catfish in the State at great prices. They have a Sonic, & a new nice Hotel also. I know how hard it is to keep a small business afloat in that area in this economy so stop in and at least give them encouragement. This is about the only stream I know of that you can catch Walleye, Brown Trout, Rainbow, Musky, Smallmouth, Bluegill, Largemouth, Goggle eye, Carp, Readhorse, all in the same area. Not the easiest river to fish without local information. It can be a little intimating at first but in short order you will be having a great time. I live and work & Guide on the Current River but The Spring River is my Home River I was born and raised in Mammoth Spring and return there every chance I get. I hate that the river has gotten the repetition of a wild crowd river, But the upper section is still a quiet peaceful place to fish & is the best fly area. From Dam 1 to Dam 3 in the summer is great. From Dam 1 to Mini Island in the winter will be some of the the most enjoyable fishing you will find anywhere.

A good frind had a great day on the Spring River last Saturday. Fishing out of The Mammoth Spring Campground.

They had a big auction down there two weeks ago and Harry moved to Rolla. His health issues and being closer to his wife's work. I don't think he will be offering Camping anymore himself. There may be someone else doing it in 2012 but I have not heard anything that would lead me to believe it will be open.

I think Deer season did hold down the big crowd on the CR opening weekend. I was fishing the area above the dam in the afternoon, and counted 15 anglers all in that area about 2:30 P.M. I also saw about 6 anglers in the area in the campground. The Spring Branch also had about 10 folks fishing it. I noticed that there was a few less trout above the dam than their was last year. Even with that in place the fishing was great. I had about 40 fish on hook during the afternoon, and lost 5 good flies due to weak knots and nice fish. The wind was off and on and so was the bite. When the wend blew through the bite was sub surface on a scud, then between gust the crackle back on surface took some fish. The river is still very low and clear, but the leaves are not as bad on the stream. I noticed the fish was not as line shy I was able to use 5X tippet on many fish. The top fly I had was the Olive Chubby Scud.

The Park ranger also has the authority to write game violations, ALL enforcement officers can enforce game violations. Even the Highway Patrol can write game violations, The ranger has the same powers of arrest as the Highway Patrol in his bailiwick.

Al you can see that happen almost every day inside the park right now with all the browns moving up. They don't have to be that big inside the park and they can keep 4. We have lost a bunch this summer. I have ask the MDC why they will not protect the Browns from the Blue Ribbon area, and they say they see no problem. GO FIGURE!Back when all the 100+ day's and the water temp started to rise we lost about 40 to the lunker boards. HATE IT!!!!

Very sorry for the loss. Also very glad to hear that there was no suffering. We have a friend that just last week got diagnosed with the same thing. Jim Myers from Lebanon MO, he was once the hatchery manager at Bennett Springs and has the Jim's Wholesale Tackle which covers all of the State Trout Parks. We are praying for a good outcome for him. He like Vince is good friends with everyone they met along life's pathway.

They also have a Tungsten thread to tie with now great to add weight also the tungsten scud bodies are great to tie with. Gets the little stuff to depth quickly.

If anyone don't think we have big trout in the parks thumb through these photos. My link

Thank you for pointing out that a few is costing everyone. I have had many people tell me that they will not ever fish the Derby just because of the actions of the few. That effects not only the Heart Association funds but the park and everything around the park. The only way to change it is to complain when you see it going on and not just to your friends, complain to MDC.

For some reason the names of Amschler, Hood & Headrick stand out to me. I must have saw the names listed in the Outdoor Life Magazine some time. I know the Lunker board at the Lodge has the names all over it. So they must be the best of the best at the park. Congratulations to them.

I don't know but I have heard you can run a fish around a hole until it is exhausted and they will lay down in still water gasping for breath and it's pretty easy to get a jig in it's mouth. Or catch one and fight it almost to death then release it and while it's laying on it's side by the bank then place the jig in it's mouth and set a legal hook in it's mouth. Don't know just saying!! I am sure none of the boy's would do that.

Any Reports on how the Derby went? Heard Mr. Hood from Licking Mo, won all the good stuff with the biggest Brown and Rainbow. He is such a great Trout angler! We need him on this forum to teach us how he does it.

Everyone has a O & they do change with time

Most folks have manners and respect others, but there is about 5 guys who are the ones that spoil it for the rest. Just look at the lunker board at the lodge and you will see their names over & over. Also look at all the mounts in the lodge and note the names on the fish there. Every time a fish over 3# is put in the stream one or two of the same 4 show up shoving and pushing their way through people to get to that fish. SAD!
