  1. Phil, let us know when and if we can do anything to help with this. Like Dan, I didn't realize we had such issues at Taney. John
  2. Thanks Steve and Dan. I'm going to try and tie some up tomorrow. There was suppose to be one in the first swap but the tyer had to bow out at the last minute. John
  3. I'm trying to find the pattern recipe and/or piture of the dead chicken which I've been told is also called the big ugly. I've searched the forum and found several references to it but no recipe. Can anyone help out a poor sole? Thanks . . . John
  4. Good looking fish Ducky! Sorry it didn't make it. Sounds like you did everything possible to keep him alive. Like Phil said, sometimes it just doesn't happen. Tight lines . . . John
  5. Fishing was tough, or at least it was for me, this weekend. I got down to the water about 5:30 p.m. on Saturday and fished for about an hour before they started generating. Got a few strikes on a new experimental fly I'm trying, hooked one but didn't land it, missed a couple of more strikes but didn't get the hook set. Came back after supper and tried again. I fished from about 10:00 p.m. until just before midnight. Fish 2 - John 0! I whimped out after I couldn't feel my nose or fingers any longer. Started again about 10:00 a.m. on Sunday. Tried several fly's ranging from dry's to leeches. Finally found the key; a #8 black wool head leech fished on the bottom. I'd site fish, letting it set on the bottom and gently twitching it causing the rabbit tail to flutter in the water. Had several show some serious interested, more that hit it but couldn't get the hook to set, and five to hand with one breaking off. The best was a 23" brown that play'd cat and mouse with me for a while. Enjoyed the game as she would charge the fly then stop short and watch it. I'd twitch it and she'd charge again. Finnaly got her to take it after ducking it around a rock. The hunt was as much fun as the fight. The one that broke off was about the same size as her. John

  7. Dano - those look awesome! Let me know how they turn out. Does he offer them up for sale? I'd be interested in a couple if so. Also, I've got a new weapon of my own I think you'll like. I tied up some "wet disco's". Thought of you when I made these. They are basically a wet fly tied with the disco yarn. Did well on them this weekend. I'll get some pics and post them for you. Tight lines. John
  8. Sorry I missed ya Duckydoty! I just got home and saw your post. How'd ya do? I finnaly gave up about midnight, actually whimped out when I couldn't feel my nose or fingers anymore. Take care and tight lines John

  12. LMW - the one that I really like and keep handy for some touch up lessons is from Cabela's. It's "The New Fly Fishing Basics." It covers Basic casting techniques, knots, equipment, basic fly tying, basic fishing techniques and advanced techniques. I keep it handy for any quick reviews. I even take it fishing with me in our portable DVD. I believe the cost was around $20 - 25. Hope this helps. John
  13. LMF - anything would be appreciated I'm sure. I'll post an update of tyer's and donations later tonight with my address that you can send the items. Thanks for your help. John
  14. Looks like work is going to cooperate with me and I plan on sneaking off for some fishing this weekend. I'll probably get down to Taney in the early afternoon for some day fishing on Saturday, but will be there for sure for some night fishing that night. Any one else going down want to hook up? John
  15. Phil - I'm also going to throw in some cracklebacks as well as the elk hair. I have plenty in my box of extra's and the wife said it was time to thin them out. I'll probably add some more odds and ends as I go thru my "stuff." I'm sure they will appreciate what ever we send. John
  16. Thanks guys. Here's the updated list of tyer's. John - #12 Elk Hair Caddis Tim - Woolybuggers and Tippet Steve - Black Wooly and tippet Terry - Buggers and "stuff" Jim - Damsel Fly
  17. I've started a new thread for a fly swap for the troops. If you're interested, check it out. John
  18. Thanks Tim, I've got you on the list. I've emailed the contact for the fly school and asked for any updates on needed supplies or flies. For now, we'll go with the list provided. Here's what we've got so far: John - #12 Elk Hair Caddis Tim - Woolybuggers and Tippet Remember, since this is swap for the troops, duplicates are welcome. John
  19. In response to the post regarding the Baghdad School of Flyfishing I propose that we start a unique type of fly swap. I would like to get as many tyer's as possible to tie a dozen (or more if your so inclined)of one of the fly's from the list below. I'll serve as the swap miester and collect the fly's and send them on to the troops. If you don't want to tie up a fly but want to help out they need tippet material (2x to 5x). Remember, this is a one-way swap. You won't be receiving anything back but the warm feeling of helping bring some fun to our troops serving their country. There will be no limit to the number of tyer's for this swap. I'd like to have the fly's to me by the middle of December so that maybe we can get them there in time for a Christmas gift from home. John FLIES Here are some specific patterns that work: Wooly Bugger sizes 6, 8, 10 black, brown and olive (olive and black are best) Elk hair caddis 12, 14, 16 Hare's Ear (bead head) 10, 12, 14 Baghdad Pheasant Butt Iraqi Minnow (This is my bead chain pattern that is a killer for asp) In general the following types of flies are good: carp flies (carpers know) 6, 8, 10 Damsel flies 6, 8, 10 Shrimp flies 8, 10, 12 minnow patterns, 6, 8, 10, 12
  20. Interesting! I didn't know that. That explains alot about my rabbit strip fly's. Now I'll have to set down at the bench and do some more tying. Darn the bad luck. Thanks for information. John
  21. That's great! So where do we start . . . getting a care package together. I'm in for donating some "stuff." John
  22. Where can I get me one of those boats!
  23. Welcome and I can agree with you about your sense of humor; based on your login name! Hope to meet up some time and do some fishing. My wife also enjoys the long rod, but doesn't wander too far . . . yet John
  24. Mine's still in the water. As soon as he decides to come home I'll get a quick picture for ya . . .
  25. Apparently so . . .
