Snow Fly Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 A friend of mine has fished Montauk for a number of years and the first time (5/6 yrs) I fished there we went up to the lake. The number of BIG fish around the outlet which drains into the C&R area was unbelievable . He claims there a still large numbers of BIG trout in the lake BUT they stay near the far shore line in the shade of the over hanging trees . I know there is no way I can throw a line the distance required to reach the far shore line. On top of the distance you have a limited amount of room for your back cast. It would sure be interesting to find out if there are many on the other side. Kinda like the old saying "The grass always looks greener on the other side of the fence" "God gave fishermen expectancy, so they would never tire of throwing out a line"
drew03cmc Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 Can you wade or put a tube into the lake? Andy
Gavin Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 Id go with the tube cuz the bottom looks really silty..Set aside some extra cash to pay for the ticket.
jdmidwest Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 No tubing in the park or any other watercraft of any kind. No swimming either, so don't let the kids screw around in the water of the park boundries. Take them out of the park to Tan Vat. I saw a group launch a couple of canoes at the handicap hole once, caused quite a stir with the park police. Members jrbhc8 Posted March 1, 2008 Members Posted March 1, 2008 There is some pretty good fish in the lake from my expierience. I've never caught any monsters, but I have plenty of 5-6 lbs nose my fly. Only get looks off the big flies. Also there are some trophy turtles in that lake. I kid you not my friend caught one by accident last summer. He fought it for a while but then the turtle just burried itself beyond sight. He was still hooked up with it, but decided to break it off, before he broke his 6wt Winston. I would guess that turtle to be around 20 lbs. Also there are some dandy grass carp, but who knows who to catch them? jrbhc8 www.troutchapters.com jrbhc8 ~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~ | <°)))>< | <°)))>< | | ¿ >°)))><
Members BKB Posted March 1, 2008 Members Posted March 1, 2008 Was there for the first time last March. Only saw one trout in the lake, but it was HUGE!!! It was at the farthest distance away that I could cast and it only "inspected" my lure once. It easily would go 10 lbs!
