loo10
"The Times They Are A-Changin..." Taney has changed just like everything else. 30 years ago I was a train robber at Silver Dollar City, Branson was a sleepy lil' town, and Taneycomo wasn't crowded at all. My Dad and I caught lots of big fish. 'Course, there was no fly shops in the area, & no fishing reports on the internet either. I tend to prefer fishing out of my boat these days. Less crowded and I can be as mobile as I want. You can catch fish from one end of this lake to the other. You see...I ain't afraid of a good fight. Never have been. And when a guy wants to walk right thru the area I'm fishing; well......I'd like to carefully lay down my rod and whip his a**! But those days are gone 'cause these days & times, you never know when someone will stab or shoot you. So I've adjusted my tactics and pick less crowded areas. That's why, although I prefer to flyfish... you just might see me anchored down lake, kicking back, sipping a a cold Leinenkugel waiting on a stupid one to eat my inflated nightcrawler. Yep, I like to eat 'em occasionally too. I love fishing Taney and I refuse to let some peckerwood ruin it! On the other hand..... we kill a couple of 'em...maybe the message would get out. snagged in outlet 3
First off, who's the guide in question? I am sure he checks here so let's hear who it is. Is it rude for the guide to hold a spot while his client is fishing somewhere else? My favorite is the guy who brings his two teenage sons down with all the gear and stuff, then lines up three abreast to shuffle their way right down the middle of the river. How disturbing is that when it is being passed on to the next generation? I was below rebar and they didn't even get out of the river to go around, they just walked right in front of me. How about the guy who brings his significant other down and stands upstream from her, she holds the end of her line out to him, he shuffles and drops her fly in the water below his feet and screams "NOW, set the hook". Your bright green fly line is lying is on the water and the guy crossing the river steps on it. Do shufflers have backing on the reels? Taney is just too small for the amount of people using it. Snagged.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted February 16, 2006 Root Admin Share Posted February 16, 2006 Rudeness, shuffling- these subjects bring out the lengthiest threads on any forum... and bring out the critical spirit in all of us. Regardless, there's always going to be stupid people to deal with (unless you become a hermit). Just hope none of us does something stupid and becomes the subject of another thread on another forum. motroutbum
i hate shufflers just as much as the next person. heres something we need to try to get implemented here on our home waters. it is a sign on the San juan below navajo dam. read it closley.....it says "to disturb or dislodge the stream bottom for the purpose of attractin fish is unlawful" There are two types of people. Those who dream dreams and wish, then there are the do'ers. I am a do'er!
Randall
funny story, i was writing a post before i saw lilley's on here. i was actually getting a little worked up but he's right, they'll always be there, but nobody should put up with it. the cases of people being purposefully rude are few and far between. most people are just oblivious, and will be very apologetic if you courteously tell them what they did. if you are dealing with a person who continues to be rude, realize that they are being disrespectful, not just to you, but to every other angler they will cross paths with. don't let the person win, stand up for yourself and your right to be where you are. chances are, the person is used to getting his way and forcing people out of their spots. the more he fails, the less he'll try. as for shufflers, i have a post in the "general flyfishing topics" forum about dealing with them. Cute animals taste better.
Murdoc
I used to Bass fish at least three days a week 15 years ago and the same rude morons that would fly in a cut off a bank are starting to fly fish now. Even tho we lead by example by walking away there are those that lead by selfishness. Allways remember that a smile and low blood pressure will extend your life of fishing on the river. Thank you everyone for being the exception to the (now a days)rule! Good fishing!! Smiles are free http://rdpflyrods.com/
Members Scott
I remember a few years back we were sitting in our boat across from Lilleys (no water running) with 2 lines out with power bait. We were about 10 yards from the far bank. Two guys were trolling along flyfishing and went between us and the bank promptly getting my line wound up in their trolling motor. They looked at us and seemed shocked, I don't even think they knew we were there! He spent about 5 minutes getting my line out and was very apologetic. Although I was very irritated at first, I just laughed it off. Remember, happiness is a choice and almost all frustration is just a form of self-pity. Greg
I think it is easy to focus on the negative behaviors of a few people. I feel that overall most of the fisherman at Taneycomo are pretty respectful. And we are all so lucky to to live close to such a wonderful fishery. Danoinark
I have to agree with Greg...there sure are alot more positives at Taney than rude, unethical and inconsiderate fishermen...Dano Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
Brian K. Shaffer
I echo Greg's and Phil's thoughts exatcly. Taney is a tough place for it to be your home waters, but my gosh - it is wonderful in all regards. best fishes - Brian Just once I wish a trout would wink at me! ozarkflyfisher@gmail.com I'm the guy wearing the same Simms longbilled hat for 10 years now.
