Brown limits: I support a 24" lenght limit for browns, but I'm not sure that it will DO anything to improve the fishing. Most of the anglers who fish there are already practicing catch & release on the 20-24" fish..Frankly, a 24" brown trout is no big deal...Its no good to eat and its too small for a wall hanger...Might as well make it 30" if we want to set arbitrary length limits.

Rainbow Limits...Leave them as is with a 12" to 20" protected slot..Most rainbows dont have the potential to grow to 24" outside of Alaska or a hatchery stock tank.

Barbless...I'm not in favor because I think that that should be left up to individual choice.

Other Issues: I wouldnt mind seeing a ban on shuffling, chumming, and snagging. A crack down on those practices would do a lot to improve the image of the fishery.

So now in addition to checking creels and limits (which is as we all agree under manned) and of course checking for anyone using scents and baits. We now need to add hook checkers as well.

Pretty soon I will be a criminal just like the poachers????

You catch and release fly fisherman really know how to make a sport so dang complicated nobody will want to figure it out and you will have the lake to yourself. Will that make you all happy? But in the end you will get the trophies. Then those of us who want to fish with kids will be relegated to the non trophy area where we can keep anything but browns under 24". Thanks.

Redbird,

I'm using your quote as a reference because it covers most of the concerns of some possible regulation changes that have been addressed in this topic. The change most likely to happen would be the length limit. I don't think any of the others will happen. Barbless, bending barbs down, C & R, C & K, I think that should all be a personal preference thing. A person should be able to enjoy their day fishing with minimal restrictions, other than the restrictions that they impose on themselves.

The "trophy area" was established to give some protection to fish that attempt to spawn, 2 months out of the year. It is not a haven for all of the large fish in Taneycomo. 10 months out of the year, most take up residence in the "non trophy area". I am primarily a C & R fisherman, but I do not agree with the "shove it down your throat" approach taken by some. You need to put personal limitations on yourself and care less about what others do or don't do. I'm out there for my enjoyment. Any improvements that we can do together as anglers is a good thing and worth a little time and effort. As far as regulation enforcement, Do like "Bman" did, take a picture, get on your cell phone. That would surely defer a few of them.

Thank you!

I don't have the numbers on all the rainbows being stocked or the browns for that matter. Some people do catch an occasional monster rainbow but you don't see that many. I think if bigger size limits are going to be put in place, then it needs to be in force for the entire lake and limit the bait fishers on how many they can pull out. There are a lot of fish in the trophy area. Some nice big browns are up there, but they are not stacked. Fewer trophy rainbows. They do exist but not that many people ever catch any.

If they are going to get big, then they have to have a chance to grow. The bait fishing areas need to let them grow also.

Shuffling is standing out in the water and moving your feet in the gravel to stir up skuds and such for the trout to eat and dropping your fly around your feet to catch them.

That's quite a slippery slope!

If we really want a trophy fishery, the kind of fishery that will turn heads all around the world, we'll do what it takes to keep our big fish alive and growing. A check-in system seems to work for deer hunters in Missouri. Why would it be too extreme for trout anglers? I'm just looking for a way to limit the take to one large brown per person per year. If we could do that and enforce it, there would soon be a lot more hellacious cannibals eating stocker rainbows below TR dam.

Because it puts more emphasis on those who are already following the rules.

Poachers are sure as heck not going to check anything in!!!!

I took two guys fishing last week who had never been to Taney.

We caught rainbows and browns up to 21 1/2 inches.

Initially, I took it upon myself to revive and release all fish brought to net.

My guests learned how & why of releasing those fish.

By the end of the trip they could do it as well as me and knew the reason why.

Lead by example.

For the record, I am not a strict C&R guy.

Sometimes I like to eat pan-fried trout for breakfast. :P

But additional regs like having a person check in one brown a season

seems like ridiculous regs to me.

Haven't we grown tired of all the regulations that are worthless?

I'd rather look for a solution to a problem we all are aware of which is more

enforcement of existing laws with a few possible revisions (24" minimum) on Taneycomo.

Too much work for me. No thanks.
