Fishing Report - White Bass!!

Coy and I (TexomaOkie) headed to the Spring River yesterday at highway 10 bridge. We met Paul Crews, another good friend, and we headed upstream in search of some whites. We found them all over.

We went up past the first gravel bar, then the second to the third. We caught whites most everywhere but we tried to fish the deeper sides (4-6 feet deep) and around the fallen trees. If we caught one we'd usually catch 3-5 more in the same place before they'd move on us. We used either 1/16th or 1/8th oz leads heads and swimming minnows in blue, smoke or chartruese. Didn't seem to matter on the color. The white ranged from 4 inches to 2 lbs. We kept 35, 12 were sows. Water was 53 in the am and 57 later in the afternoon. We fished from 9 till 4 pm. Water was stained- just right. Very little current even in the shallow riffles.

Yeah my boss went on Wed. and said he caught a bunch too. Most where small, but he said a couple were nice mixed in. Said he lost a real nice over the side of the boat on a head shake. Oh yea, he fished downstream from 10 bridge.

Do you have to have a boat to fish this area or can you wade fish it?

Yes, you can wade fish it, but bring your walking shoes because there's a lot of water.

My father in-law and i went sunday morning (3/19) in the rain and had a smattering of success. We started about a mile upstream of the bridge. We caught mostly small males. We caught the majority of fish on white jigs, but our better fish were caught on small jerk baits. There was some talk that the best fishing has already happened, but i don't think so because there are so many small males. I figure the females and the best fishing is yet to come.

There's good gravel at the bridge and more upstream. There were a bunch of waders upstream from the bridge about 1/4 mile waded most of the way accross the river and fishing the channel but I don't think you have to wade that far over to catch fish. We caught whites off the channel in the flats in 2-3 feet of water.

But I do think the key to catch the bigger females is fishing the channel on the bottom.

I don't think the best fishing has happened yet either. My report from earlier was also the smaller males that he was encountering. After these rains things should really heat up!
