So it looks like the weather is going to be in the mid 50s next Sunday so maybe I can make a day trip down to Bennett... I'll have my 6 year old with me... Any ideas on what he should use? He's a pretty good caster and likes to fish a lot, but I'd like him to at least have a chance of catching a fish...

Jig under a bobber maybe??? The regulations say flies only, but the way I read it, I jig would count as a fly...

Any experience would be greatly appreciated!!

Egg flys (glowballs), or better yet furballs are good flys to start kids off with. invest in a set of polorized glasses for him too, being able to see the fish will keep him at it longer. Jig-flys are "ok" but fish don't hold onto them long and he might get frustrated watching that bobber twitch without hooking many fish.

Furballs are notorious for sticking in a fishes mouth...like velcro, and gives you a few extra seconds to set the hook. Get some White ones tied with red thread, a few chocolate brown, and a few olive.

Thanks for the tips... I'll tie up a few extra globalls...

Never heard of a furball... I googled it and found nothing... What is it?

Thanks again!!

Hook: mustad 3399 12 - 16

Thread: red 3/0 monocord

Material: dyed rabbit fur (white, brown, moss green, or peach)

spin the fur up in a thick dubbing loop, wrap forward, whip finish and cement the head.

Probably more big fish caught on this "fly" at Bennett Spring over the years than any other single fly pattern I know of... seriously. Sight fish it (the white one is easy to see, just set the hook when it disappears) or you can dead drift it under a bobber. It's a trout park staple and has saved many a persons day.

If all else fails the Suzy Hole is full of goggle-eye.. They are right off the concrete too, so it should be an easy and exciting catch for a 6 year old.. Good luck, I will be down there sunday.. Would be happy to do some pro-bono guiding if I can...

#1- Exactly where are the goggle eye?

#2- Does catch and release apply to just to trout, or to all other species in the park during that time as well?

Catch and release applies to all fish in the spring branch.

I was "carded" today by a park ranger (while in the Suzy hole slayin' goggleeye) and he asked me if I was keeping the goggle eye.. I said "I'm not allowed to keep them, am I?".

He said catch and release only applies to the trout... But then I asked what the length limit was on goggleeye and he said he didn't know and would have to check. And then got in his jeep (presumably to check the length limit) and just left!

Now in all honesty, I believe you before I believe him, but I can't find the catch and release rules anywhere on the websites.. Any chance someone could help? I don't wanna keep em, but I would like to know the laws in case my nephew wants to keep a meal..

Either way I didn't keep any to be safe.. So they are still in there, and they are pounding the jigs!!!

Hmm, interesting. I was basing that statement on the fact that some guys got busted for having a stringer of smallies during the C&R season several years back. I'll have to look into it deeper....but heck the Ranger should know better than me, for sure.

A mess of G'eyes, baked beans and hushpuppies sounds pretty good. :P

Update (edit): Nope, here's the way it reads word for word.

No fish may be possessed during the catch & release season, and all fish caught are to be released immediately, unharmed. Proper catch & release techniques are essential for released fish to survive.

Doesn't say "no trout", it reads "no FISH".

Must have missed you... We were there from about 10:30 to 1ish... then moved up to zone 2 after lunch... wish I would have seen you.

My son definately had a hard time casting the light tackle... but I caught one for him and let him reel it in... There was another guy there just killing the goggle eye... probably caught 20 or so in about an hour... he was nice enough to let my son reel a few in...

I was skunked trout fishing... I really need to hire a guide to teach me how to fish there... I had good success at Tanycomo last year, but nothing today... I moved up to zone 2 and fished by the outlet (about 50 yards down as the outlet was crouded)... Tried 16-18 midges, globalls, small woolies, and even an 18 Griffith's Knat and 18 renagade after a hatch at about 2:30... as we were walking out, talked to some guys up by the outlet who were catching quite a few... found out they were using 20-22 dries...

Most of my time was spent messing with both of our tangles... probably 5-10 hits over with nothing to hand... I was hoping for more... It was only my 3rd day flyfishing and the first at Bennett

Anyone know of anyone who guides at Bennett?

Aside from the actual lack of fish caught, it was an awsome day with my boy... he had a great time and, by the end of the day, I was casting pretty well... good long casts
