Members ksbass Posted December 7, 2008 Members Posted December 7, 2008 My son and I and a friend from work got to the cleaning station parking lot around 8:15 on Saturday. We started fshing in the pools above and below the handicap access pads. Action started quickly for all. On my second cast a 5+ lb pig grabbed my yellow and white big chicken and thrashed wildly for a few seconds. Then threw the hook. Got my pulse going and took off the chill. A minute later Seth yelled as he hooked a whooper as well. He wasn't ready for it though and had his drag set too tight. On the first big run, the fish straightened his rod and snapped off. This was on a blue and pink conehead. Meanwhile my friend, Steve, got his turn with a yellow and orange bunny bug and hooked a nice one. He fought it for quite a while but it finally took him into the rocks and shredded his tippet. 15 minutes later I hooked and landed a nice 4+ lb rainbow on a yellow and orange bunny bug. I bumbled the kodak moment though and released the fish before Seth got a picture. What a start! We fished from the 2nd show hole to the rocks in the C&R area. We brought to hand around 40 between the three of us. Action was the typical hot and cold. We did well on a sowbug, micro SJW, dead scud, Griffiths gnat, white marabou midge and olive marabou midge. I landed two more over two lbs and ended the day with a nice 2+ lber. All feisty rainbows today. Weather was incredible and gloves came off around 10AM. Wind was gusty at times but it was clear and sunny and we stayed plenty warm. We saw the eagles soaring above and no doubt laughing at us. We also saw 2 dead beavers in the stream that looked like they had died from lead poisoning. Not crowded at all today. The streamside was nearly empty several times with the most people that I saw fishing down further in the C&R area. Thanks to Tim for suggesting the big, brightly colored flies to get big one's attention. They work! What a wonderful Dec day to be at Roaring River. We're already planning a birthday trip there in two weeks. KBS Check out our line of furled leaders at Dad and Em's Fishing Products!
laker67 Posted December 7, 2008 Posted December 7, 2008 KSB, Glad to hear you got into some good quality fish. Good report! Although MDC won't acknowledge it, it seems that beavers, muskrats, and especially river otters, die from" lead" poisoning quite often in the trout parks and surrounding waters. Good fishing on your upcoming trip.

I saw one burried under some leaves at a privately owned pay trout park. That was the only place I saw one. Must have been something he ate????????? Members Grant Miller Posted December 8, 2008 Members Posted December 8, 2008 I have tentative plans to be there in two weeks. Maybe I'll see you on the stream! I'm coming from KCK, how long is the trip? (I don't trust the Google Maps time) "Life is like a beanstalk, isn't it." ~ John Geirach

(I don't trust the Google Maps time) 3.5 hrs plus. Never driven from KCK though, basing this on 2 hrs from home to KC, and 1.5 hrs from home to the park. If you are traveling early morning might make better time though.
