laker67 Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 Your right, laker67, but it's usually a miserable hatch when it happens. Like I said, if they had a decent hatch... That's my best summertime fly. You might be fishing it at the wrong end of the water column.
Danoinark Posted January 5, 2009 Author Posted January 5, 2009 Well the chore is done. I have discarded some, added some, organized the boxes...and guess what? Instead of 3 boxes..... I now have 4.... So much for minimizing. But at least it's easier to pick and choose. The downside, the vest now weighs another pound. Zach Bearden Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 Dano, Nope, I didn't make it onto the American team this year... I'm going to work my rear off to make it this next year! They're going to the Czech Republic! Czech nymphing is the prefered way to nymph anyways. There is hardly anytime that I really use a true "Czech Nymph". They generally imitate a caddis or maybe a sowbug. Not always the best choice, I don't have much confidence in them but I have them for an emergency. It is indeed much like high sticking. I fish a 30' foot long leader alot of times now. Alot of people don't really consider this fly fishing, I can understand why. 90% of the time I never even use a foot of fly line. We can't use an indicator, so in turn we look for bumps. Troutchaser, a "hotspot" is a flashback, or a bright spot on a regular fly. "Its clearly Bree time baby!" Brian Wise Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 Hey Zach who is the coach now? I have to agree with you, when I am Czech Nymphing I will not be using true Czech nymphs the vast majority of the time. Speaking of hot spot patterns, have you fished a certain hot spot Hare's Ear yet? I am seriously thinking about tying a box of Psycho Princes and nothing but Psycho Princes. I can honestly say that it was the best producer for the trip we took over Thanksgiving.....when a fish takes one and is broken off on the hook-set just to take another Psyco Prince not 10 minutes later it has to be a good fly. Out of 20 trout streams that weekend it probably took fish on 14 or 15 of them. Brian My Youtube Channel
brittsnbirds Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 Dano, you nailed my New Years Resolution!! I have all of my boxes and fly's laid out on a table in the basement. I have come to the conclusion that I am a pack rat. I see fly's on this and other sites that look good or there is a good report on and I will tie it. I fail to cull it out if it isn't a producerf as a result I have many that could be culled. I have flirted with looking at the Scientific Angles new boxes. They offer more storage, see through and are waterproof. I was looking specifically at the 752. I think 700 fly's would be enough to carry for all situations. I would love to get my fly's sorted down to 1 box maybe that one would do what I need? Pat
jdmidwest Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 Last fall I run across a neat little system called the Flytedeck. It has a single Okuma fly box, small pouch for leaders, rod holder, zingers, and 2 bottle holders. I downsized for quick get out of the car trips. It is great for hitting different accesses, or during hot weather. I have included a few pics of it. Flytedeck system But seriously, I have to pack a bunch of flies in case something comes up. My normal chest pack from Watermark is a full blown system. I can pack the kitchen sink and a toilet if I need it. The extra weight gives me better traction when I wade past my waist in the current.... Normal boxes I carry are an egg box, terrestrial box, dry fly box with caddis and mayflies, bead head box, scud box, big fly box with various big flies, woolly box, and a streamer box. And I will still run across something I need. I have pics of them too. The dry fly part I answered in another thread. Alot of the time it is not about matching a hatch, it is catching the fish looking up instead of down. Dry flies and emergers are important parts to fly fishing. Zach Bearden Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 Dano, you better believe I'll give em heck! Brian, one of these days were going to have to go fishing.
