Flysmallie Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 I hesitate to jump on board because my free time is so wierd. Most people know that I have a lot of it, but very little of that falls on a weekend. But I would love to join the Hickory Stream Team. I believe that if this is worked correctly and you don't intentionaly try to embaress the city, then many good things could come out of this. I like the idea MarkinKC has with getting a cleanup story published in the MDC Conservationist Magazine. Every bit of publicity is going to place some pressure on the city to do something. But a lot of the problem is that they really may be under staffed. Just like the ideas of the waste barrels in popular places. You have a couple of problems with this. The first one is who is going to pick up the trash? It would have to be done more than once a week because of problem number two. How would you keep the locals from using it for their household trash. I think that's why most accesses have taken the waste barrels away. Anyway, we have some great ideas. But the only way that we will gain any support from the city is if we step in and do a lot of the work up front.
denjac Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 Lots of good brain storming on this topic. I would be up to join a Hickory creek steam team. I would even be happy to contact the Hatchery and see if there is any ideas or support from them. Dennis Boothe Joplin Mo. Buzz Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 All great ideas here. I like the idea of organizing a stream team. I also believe that we don't want to embarrass the city either, maybe let them know what our plans are and give them a chance to get on board before anything that might be embarrassing hits the news, not that it really has to be. I know that over the last 15 or so years they have purchased most of the land surrounding the creek, so they do have a lot of money invested in it. I am going to go to Hickory this weekend and take a few pictures of some of the problem areas. Buzz If fishing was easy it would be called catching.
Members tgard27 Posted January 22, 2009 Author Members Posted January 22, 2009 Flysmallie has a good point about trash and maybe this is where we could get some support from Neosho National Fish Hatchery. I think that the first thing to really getting the community on board is to call the city of Neosho and let them know our plans to create a stream team. After that, we need to publicize our intentions to the city of Neosho. Maybe we could post an add in the local newspaper calling for volunteers to join? As it appears on this post, we have about 6 interested people in the team as of right now. I also like the idea of signs as I personally believe that a lot of the poaching that goes on happens due to the misconception that nobody cares and that no one is paying attention. It would be easy to believe this as I have never seen an agent down there, and the lack of trash cans and abundance of litter in the stream creates the belief that no one cares. I think that we could alert people that we are here and we do care about this stream if we could get the MDC to allow us to put up signs along the stream. Maybe some signs would shine some light on this stream and remind people that what they are doing is wrong, illegal and that it hurts both their community and Hickory. Anyways, we are making some headway here and I am very excited. Let’s keep it up! Travis
ollie Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 Ok, appartently I need to step up to the plate. I have complained before about the problems of Hickory and I'm sure I live the closest ( 4 blocks away ). I just have never had any luck with the city of Neosho. I will contact Dave at the Hatchery and get the number of anyone who they think can help. I do like the idea of a stream team. I never thought that anyone from out of state would travel to Neosho just to fish Hickory. The trash problem exists all through out town. Trash over a mile away drains into the creek. It is a real problem that many people just don't care about around here. I know at one time the city has considered the thought of a somewhat RR type stream, but I havn't heard anything in awhile about that. This is a positive post that should not die. I honestly didn't know that many people cared about this stream. Members tgard27 Posted January 22, 2009 Author Members Posted January 22, 2009 Good to hear from you Ollie. I hope that this does awaken the people of Neosho to the fact that people outside of Neosho not only travel to this stream but also care about its well being. I'm glad that you have joined our team. I am wondering if any of the local fly shops in Kansas City would allow me to post up flyers for our stream team. I think that the word is spreading and some real momentum is being gained here. denjac Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 Do we need to have a meeting? I know the ones that live far away couldnt come but the local ones can. I am going to go down there this weekend and look things over. Dennis Boothe Joplin Mo. ollie Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 I just printed off a Stream Team application from MDC and will try and fill it out later today or tonight. I will be online later tonight and let you know what else I have found out.
