Members jefly77 Posted January 20, 2009 Members Posted January 20, 2009 Fished sat and mon. Saturday caught about 20. All were caught on rapalas worked slowly against the current. Cast, let the lure just swim in the current and reel a few turns and let it swim some more. Only caught 1 little 13" brown. I usually catch a few more than that. Today similar results, except that I caught a couple on Thomas spoons. I fish Taney almost every weekend I rarely see anyone else fishing the same way I do. Most of the other spinning guys only throw in-line spinners or spoons. Do any of you regulars ever fish the way I describe? Just wondering.

My buddy and I were fishing outlet 1 most of the day and I seen a guy with spinning tackle fishing sort of like you how you just described. I was really hoping the generation would be turned off this weekend so I could have done something besides beat the outlets, but it was still fun to get away and catch a bunch of trout. Man those things come alive when they flush the hatchery outlets. It's like a bunch of piranha's when that happens.
denjac Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 I was down there too Sat and Sun. for a few hours each day. Fished spinning gear up by the cable mostly. Was throwing super dupers. The wind a current were rough but still caught fish. Almost had to use a club when I wanted to cross the outlet for the guys fishing it. That to me would be no fun standing shoulder to shoulder. I did think the fish were running a little bigger than normal, my biggest being almost 3 pounds. The boats running up to the cable were curtious running the left hand side and then drifting back down that side well away from us waders. Dennis Boothe Joplin Mo. mwfischer Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 Thanks for the report... I will be at Taney in early March and my group also usually sticks with spin fishing. We usually throw the spoons and inline spinners too, what kinds of rapalas are you talking about? Countdowns?
Members jefly77 Posted January 21, 2009 Author Members Posted January 21, 2009 Yeah Seth that was me, I was the one who waded out just a little further than all the flyfishermen and threw my raps way out and then worked them back to me. Sat I tail-hooked a sucker that must have been 24" long and in the 5lb range. I did not know they got that big. mwfischer - countdowns will work, but you will lose them way more than you will the floating raps. I think the joited raps in j-5, j-7, and j-9 work the best. The jointed raps have quite a bit more shake to them than solid ones do. Gold and black is my go to color.
