Members Crooked Creek Angler Posted January 20, 2009 Members Posted January 20, 2009 Looking forward to sharing information about stream fishing for smallmouth on Ozark streams with other conservation-minded fishermen. Found this site a month or so ago and just signed up. Have slowly been trying to fish every smallmouth stream big or small within a couple hours drive of Mtn. Home, Ar over the past 20 years. I primarily fish Crooked Creek and the Buffalo River with spinning gear, but have fished the Kings River, Osage Creek, the Eleven Point, the Spring River, the Jack's Fork and a few others that shall remain nameless for now. It's hard to beat Crooked Creek day in and day out and I've either floated or waded the entire stretch from above Pyatt to the mouth. Right now I am a spin fisherman, but could see myself eventually tinkering around with a fly rod. Looks like there are quite a few people on this forum that fly fish for smallies. Look forward to talking about fishing a little during the winter months as the creek fishing is slow...
DD'sMC Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 Welcome aboard. Look forward to you posts. We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. The two best times to go fishing? When it is raining and when it is not.
Ham Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 Hey CCA, At some point I'd like to pick your brain with general questions about the great unknown sections of CC between Y Town and the 101 bridge. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
Zack Hoyt Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 Welcome from a former Harrison resident. I cut my teeth fishing the Buffalo and Crooked Creek. Lived in Boxley for 7 years. There is truly nothing like flinging a fly rod. I havent touched my spincasting gear in some time. Zack Hoyt OAF Contributor Flies, Lies, and Other Diversions
Danimal Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 Welcome. Always good to see a fellow stream smallie fan on here. Dan-o RELEASE THOSE BROWNIES!!
hoglaw Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 Ham: DO NOT attempt to float anything below yellville unless there's a significant rain or generally high water. I found a low water bridge down there once (possibly 101, not sure) and figured it'd be a short float from Yellville. The water was pretty low, but I didn't mind since that generally makes for better wade fishing. My brother and I loaded up the canoe and set off from Yellville. About an hour in, I kept thinking...soon we'll find a pool...this is all going to be worth it. We had to drag our canoe through more willow thickets than you can imagine, and the water was all skinny. I think we caught two fish the whole time. It was awful. When we finally got to the bridge, we trucked it back up to Kelly's slab so we could at least get some fishing in. We floated from there to Yellville with the usual results. Maybe that low water bridge down to the river is a better stretch. I've gone up from the river before and you can get to some pretty good holes. But whatever you do, don't float down from Yellville in anything less than high water.
Danoinark Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 Welcome CCA...I am in Harrison and try to fish CC as much as possible. There are some great feeder creeks that hold good smallmouth too especially in the Pyatt area. I primarily use the fly rod and can't think of a better day than spending it on some of our warmwater streams and tribs. Dano Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
Ham Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 Yeah Hoglaw, that's what I heard/read before. If there aren't year round decent pools, I don't know that would really be great fishing IF you could get to it. Lots pf better water to fish day in day out than that. Flysmallie Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 Fly fishing for smallmouth?? Are you guys serious??  It is the only way to do it. Yes there may be more productive methods, but a nice smallmouth on conventional tackle is a wonderful fight. On a fly rod it's insanity. I absolutely love it. I haven't fished Crooked Creek. But Danoinark has promised me that we would hit it this year, of course that's what we said last year too!!! Nice to have you join us. Look forward to your posts.
msamatt Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 CCA: Welcome to the board. I'm planning on taking an Arkansas trip sometime this spring. Maybe I'll see you on the water.
