My lovely bride and I are planning a family vacation for us and our 13 year old daughter on the Mayan Riviera in Mexico this May or June. We want to do some fishing while down there. I want to do some fly fishing for Bonefish and we want a trip for something in the Sailfish or other big fish as well.

I'm looking at charters online, but would like some tips or advice from anyone who has been there, done that.

Any and all advice or tips are appreciated.

Not sure about the fishing but if your a scuba diver, cozumel is an oasis for underwater recreation. I would have liked to have gone fishing while I was there but was only there for one day on a cruise. Good Luck

Hi Terry

I went to Cancun a few years ago and went out with a guide for baby tarpon on the fly. The bay inside the "7" at Cancun is a tarpon nursery and fish to 50 lbs are common.

I took my wife and then 6 year old daughter out for an evening into the night trip and it was awesome. I had a tarpon on for quite a while and when I got it near the boat a very large croc came out of the mangrove to eat it. The guide was stabbing it with a push pole and the croc was snapping his jaws at it. My wife was taking pics and my daughter was screaming bloody murder. We got it in and my daughter was so frightened we couldn't calm her down till we hit dry land. What a trip!!!!!!!!

I've caught many saltwater fish but those baby tarpon were unbelievable when hooked. I couldn't imagine a 150 pound mature fish on a 12 weight. cancunlighttackledotcom. BTW, as anywhere in the Gulf, April and May are peak months.

Don't forget the surf fishing at dusk and dawn for jacks and barracuda.

Terry my FIL, son, and I did a deep sea charter out of Cancun about 10 years ago. It was a pretty good time. We both cast and trolled for whatever we could catch. And we mostly caught Barracuda. I don't remember the boat name but they did a pretty good job but the language barrier was a little bit of a problem - their English was spotty and our Spanish was non existent. My son still talks about catching the barracudas and also about the first mate who could open bottles (soda and beer) with his eye! At the time (he was 6 or 7) both frightened him but now it's an exciting memory.

I've not done it but I've read there is great bonefishing just a short drive or bus ride from Cancun. Ascension Bay maybe? My wife loves Mexico. Next time we go we plan to try to spend a day or 2 there.

A word of caution though - have you read about the current violence in Mexico? In relation to their war on drugs and the druglords. I know it is concentrated along the border but I think they are putting out warnings about the entire country. Hopefully it will calm down before your trip.

My future inlaws in myself took a trip to Cancun back in sept didn't do any fishing since it was a family tripand not a fishing trip. There is a charter company there called Aqua World that had several differant charters available and they are a short taxi ride or bus ride within the hotel zone. The bay SIO3 is talking about I believe is the same one they do "jungle tours" in was right across the street from our hotel it looked very fishing and we saw some tarpon along the mangrove island infact I have pics of them cruising through. On a side note we didn't see anything out of the ordinary in the hotel zone but once you get out of the hotel zone your on your own. Let me know if you want more info

Sounds like you need a couple of bodyguards. Flysmallie and myself are available.

Terry,

I just got back from there about 3 weeks ago, we were in Playa for the second winter in a row. Last year, the surf fishing was awesome on chatter baits and rouges, this year, the wind would not stop and made for poor conditions.

We have deep sea fished the channel between main land and cozumel, there are fish there, but it gets hit hard. There are a lot of so called charter boats to take you out, but they are just after your $$ and will not go near far enough out.

We use a mayan guide who is from the Yucatan and knows what he is doing. I do not have his number, but make sure your guide is a native of the area and not from another part who has moved to a tourist town to take your money.
