TroutFearMe Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 Ok so here is the deal I was out fishing today at Suson trying to beat out the cheeseheads but thats another story. I noticed my line which is only a year old and taken care of better then my car wasn't casting very well, so upon further inspection I noticed it was cracked so in anger I reeled in and called it a day heartbroken because my line is jacked up. So my quastion is what line should I choose should I stay with the SA GPX Mastery Serius or is there a compairable line for a better price.
Zack Hoyt Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 This may help or might not.... I have not tried a ton of lines, but in this short experience have learned that what you spend parallels directly with performance. Fly line is not a place I would skimp. Flysmallie Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 I like RIO better than I did the SA GPX. But I love SA Sharkskin. Yeah it costs more but it's great.
Danoinark Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 I'd package that line up and send it back. SA GPX should last longer than a year I would say. Maybe it's defective. Dano Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
Brian Wise Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 I'd package that line up and send it back. SA GPX should last longer than a year I would say. Maybe it's defective. Dano I'll second that. The last GPX I had lasted almost 2 years for me.....and that is a lot of water time. I would check with SA before buying another line. I am now torn between SA GPX and RIO Gold....have been fishing the RIO for a while now and really, really like it though. Brian My Youtube Channel
trout fanatic Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 I have got a Rio selective trout in a 5 wt and rio steelhead taper in a 8 wt. I like both of them a lot ( a noticeable difference between that and the cabelas prestige lines they replaced). BUT-they cost more than twice as much. Are they twice the line that the cabelas are? Nah, not in my opinion. Good lines, noticible differences just not THAT noticible.
flyfshn Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 I just went thru this and several guys recommended Rio. I purchased the Rio Selective Trout and it is really nice line and it casts great. I'm glad I listened to them. That deal that Lilley has for Rio gold $45 is a good deal!! Fish On! Mike Utt “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery. TroutFearMe Posted February 26, 2009 Author Posted February 26, 2009 Well I talked to bass pro about the problem and I am supposed to call them tomarrow to see what there answer, I also talked to Chris at T Hargroves here in STL and he said that fly lines has about a 500 hour life span. Now I know I fish a lot but I know I haven't put 500 hours on this line I think I am at 498 hours , come on who keeps track of how many hours they spend on the stream. I took the issue a step further and emailed SA to hear what they have to say but I will see. If I have to break down and buy new line I am moving toward the Rio Gold but does it come in a willow color or do they have a dark tip that transitions into a brighter color.
Gavin Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 I'd check out the SA Mastery Expert Distance as opposed to the GPX..I use the SA Expert Distance for most of my fishing with 5wts and up...I like the longer head length because for distance and roll casting. The Rio Gold is similar and a good line though the head is just a bit shorter than the XXD lines. Check out the taper profiles on the manufacturers site......I usually fish DT's or Triangle Tapers on 4wts and below... I not sold on the Sharkskin lines yet. I've tried em on the lawn and they cast a bit further than the XXD, might have added 5-10' but it wouldnt have made any difference on the river. The downside.... they made a lot of noise, and I didnt like the feel of the line. I've gotten plenty of line burns while distance casting with standard fly lines before and the Sharkskin felt like it wanted to bite me back. Cheers.
