Have been getting ready for the spring bluegill season tying some simple foam spiders. I have been using UTC 140 denier thread and in the tying process the thread is just coming apart. Am I doing something wrong or has anyone else experienced this? Went to my local fly shop tonight and he had me switch to UNI-thread 6/0. Thanks for your help!

Don't tighten down to hard on the 6/0 or you will be buying more foam, will cut foam like a razor blade............... ;)

Consider switching to GSP (Gel spun polyethelyne). It is really strong, and pretty easy to tie with.

Also, you might buy a new spool. I have noticed that when UTC threads get older they become very prone to breakage.

The UTC 140 is kind of like a floss...its not twisted together like Uni Thread...so youll get a loose strand every know and then..Uni thread 6/0 holds together a lot better but it will cut foam..Might try to find some Danville 3/0, it wraps flat and it holds together. Uni 3/0 would work too...Gel Spun threads are great, but they are hard on scissors and you dont really need that kind of strength to compress foam...Spinning deer hair is a different story. Cheers.

Check your bobbin. Some of the tips arn't polished adequately and will abrade thread. You probably will need to replace it unless you have some fine diamond compond to polish it.

I'm suprised to hear several of you have cutting problems with uni-thread. I do quite a bit of foam work and have never had a problem with it cutting through the foam. I just take a loose wrap first, then begin tightening (squeezing) it up on sucessive wraps....no cutting problems with uni 6/0 or 3/0 here.
