I couldn't agree more, I loose too many jigs to have an elaborate method LOL!! I just keep it as cheap and effortless as possible, I also use the lighter method and have never had any issues with the paint, but I do also let them cure in an old toaster oven!!!

I use an acohol burner rather than a lighter (from by arrow building stuff) toaster oven works great, simple and cheap. Would buy rather than build but can not find what I need, like a 80th oz jig head with a #6 hook for crappie, most have a size 10 etc.

Taught fly tying for years and when students said they were taking up fly-tying

(or jig tying) to save money I always advised them that they will not save money.

But they will be able to create EXACTLY what they want

which oftentimes is not available commercially.

I believe if you have confidence in what you are fishing with,

you usually WILL catch more fish! ;)

I'll go you one better, I paint my heads with rattlecans, the fish don't seem to know the difference. I prime them and follow with a flat camo paint in a greenish brown. Fish are looking at the action, not the paint job.

If you want to add guard to a jig that doesn't have one, use stainless wire. SS in .013 is soft and around .018 is stiffer. You can alter the mold with a saw blade. Buy an appropriate size saw blade from Sears, something very close in width, and groove one side of the mold where you want the guard.

Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

Well now, that's cool. :goodjob:

I make some weedless smallmouth jigs and my first step is to tie

some Hard mason to the hook and angle towards hook.

Never thought about altering mold to hold a weedguard.

Hmmmmmm...

Oh, by the way...what's a rattlecan???

Paint spray cans. Walmart did carry three colors of flat paint in camo colors.

Smallies were my target also and the finer wire seemed to work well in rivers and for Smallies. I bent the wire 90 degrees in the head and put a small end in the open end to keep it from sticking me.

"Well, bust my buttons. That's a horse of a diff'rent color!"

Done that myself...works great. :D

Another item that works great is fingernail polish.

On poppers AND jigs.

I agree, in fact I don't think you can improve much on clear Hard As Nails at $1 a bottle. There are also some neat pearl colors out their hiding in the women's aisle. You do get some funny looks though.

My daughter used to tell people that her DAD had the best colored fingernail polish but that he wouldn't share with her.

You got to be a manly-man to weather that kind of talk!!!
