Dear all,

Just got a new set of waders and boots for smallmouth fishing on streams around my Dad's place in Jasper County. I hate to disturb the smallies this time of year because they are generally on their beds trying to spawn. I would like to test out my new gear, but I am not a fly fisherman. If I go to the wading areas at Taneycomo with a spin rod and some jigs am I first legal, and secondly is it a waste of time?

Curious as to everyone's thoughts.

Thanks,

Jeff

Yeah, go to Taney....you definately dont want to go to Beaver Creek and try that stuff out on whites, or above Blunk hole on the James messin with whites there. ;)

Go for it for sure... But just think of all the wonderful things you're missing by not usiing a fly rod... ;)

There are whites in Beaver and Blunk Hole? :P

TIGHT LINES, YA'LL

Go for it. But don't limit yourself to just jigs though. Jigs work great but sometimes they just won't hit a jig. With an UL spinning rod and a float/bobber - you can cast flies as well.

You will need a yearly trout permit from the state while fishing any state water with trout in it. $7.

Be sure your line is not very large...Maybe 4-6lb and then use a lighter leader either tippet or 2 lb flurocarbon line.

And you can get one heck of a long drag free drift with the fly/float method!

The only good line is a tight line
