Brian Wise Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 So my eldest is getting ready to turn 6 in April. What does he want for his birthday...a fly rod. So I should be getting the new Ross Journey rod in the mail this week sometime...coupled with a Flystart reel. The rod is really cool, a 7 1/2' 4 wt with a smaller grip for the kids, they come in pink or blue (which I could do without because that just means he'll grow out of it that much quicker but kind of cool)and it's a 4 piece. Ross Journey Rod This is the first real birthday that we at the Wise household have been through with schoolmates involved. A lot of kids want to do a bowling birthday party....Chuck-e-Cheese....or the regular old stay at home birthday---not my kid, he chose Dry Run Creek. Brian My Youtube Channel
patfish Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 That is a very "Wise" decision on your boy's part....
flyfishmaster Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 Brian, That is one smart kid you got there. One of my girls will be turning 5 in mid April and she wants a "Brats" party. No mention from here about fishing. Later, FFM Woo Hoo Fish On!!
Terry Beeson Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 ...not my kid, he chose Dry Run Creek... I wanna go to THAT birthday party!!!!! TIGHT LINES, YA'LL  "There he stands, draped in more equipment than a telephone lineman, trying to outwit an organism with a brain no bigger than a breadcrumb, and getting licked in the process." - Paul O’Neil
DD'sMC Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 Can I come too? We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. The two best times to go fishing? When it is raining and when it is not.
fishinwrench Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 Right on ! That's cool that they are finally turning out decent fly rods for small hands, I had to custom build one for my daughter when she was 8, which was really cool and all, but it was a lot of work for something she was going to grow out of after 2 seasons. I went through 3 cork grips before I got one turned down right without breaking it. You'll really enjoy the "wading boot ordeal" as time goes on
OKFlyFisher44 Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 LOL...he's not even my boy and it makes me proud! I can't wait for my daughter to get old enough to start fishing... Chance ...I'm haunted in my dreams of waters I have yet to fish and trout I have yet to catch... Chasing the Dream...
tippett7 Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 That's cool. Hopefully you guys will be fishing together for the rest of your life. I am teaching my 6 year old girl how to cast a flyrod and how to mend. She is doing good and she remebers 10 and 2. Ha
Don Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 Fishing instead of bowling? He's a Wise young man. Happy Birthday, Don Don May I caught you a delicious bass.
Brian Wise Posted March 29, 2009 Author Posted March 29, 2009 It is really amazing how young kids can be and still do well fly fishing. In late 2006 I was practicing for the Best of the West distance casting competition and one day he came out and wanted to cast....and did well. He caught his first trout on the fly the spring of 2007 and then caught a PIG of a rainbow at Dry Run last year. They are sponges and hang on your every word....until they lose interest. Another reason Dry Run is so good is the playground in Quarry Park which is really close to the lower part of the stream--run over there when they get bored with fishing. Such a cool place.
