Members phins Posted April 10, 2009 Members Posted April 10, 2009 Just to let you know there is a bad batch of Tec-Tan line currently being sold exclusively by Cabelas. Purchased the 4 lb. test last year and had good success with the theory that the products 4 lb. test is thinner in diameter than standard 2 lb. mono. This year I purchased the 3.1 lb. and had a least 12 fish break off even with the drag removed entirely. While fishing I pulled some line off the spool and in certain lengths it would retain it strength and in other length areas I swear if you sneezed on it the line would bust. I'm out the $27 not including the postage and handling fees. Don't make the same mistake.
Members TroutRabbithunter Posted April 11, 2009 Members Posted April 11, 2009 I have had the same problem with tec-tan line lately too. I once had my drag set a little tight with 5.1 lb test and when I pulled the line it snapped! It used to be that the line was real sturdy and thin, but now when I use it I lose fairly small trout. I also got mine from Cabela's where they wouldn't refund me! Better luck with that line in the future.
trizkid Posted April 12, 2009 Posted April 12, 2009 i bought some last year 3lb and lost nearly 10 figh also i just think it is crappie line TrIzzout
ollie Posted April 12, 2009 Posted April 12, 2009 I use to use Tectan as well, but made the switch to P-line and haven't had any issues. "you can always beat the keeper, but you can never beat the post" There are only three things in life that are certain : death, taxes, and the wind blowing at Capps Creek!
Ham Posted April 12, 2009 Posted April 12, 2009 I have some old Tectan 4.9. It seems to be TINY thin, soft, supple and have almost no abrasion resistance. Fine for open water fishing. Terrible for river fishing where rocks or wood is involved. So, I don't know if you got a bad batch or not. Maybe Tectan is what it is. Abrasion resistance seems to be a function of two things. The chracteristics oof the material itself and the thickness of the line. If Tectan's formula doesn't have great abrasion resistence and you get it in a super thin size, you're gonna be plagued by breakoffs. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. BredMan Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 I bought two spools of the 7.3lb Tectan at Cabela's and have used both spools without any problems. Have three reels spooled with Tectan. Tossed 1/8 - 3/8 spoons all winter and up to now haven't had a single break off. Haven't really dragged the line across much rock and debris so I can't say how well it resist abrasions. I have read on other fishing forums where a few guys complained about the break offs but also very good reviews as well. The diameter and color of the line really sold me. The color is a weird light yellow/green, very different than other line colors. The 7.3lb test is about the same diameter of most other 4lb test mono lines. I plan to try either the 9.2lb or the 11.9lb on one of my bass reels to see how it does. One thing for sure, you can cast this line a country mile!
Members Whiteriver Posted April 27, 2009 Members Posted April 27, 2009 I too am a victim of bad Tectan line. I bought mine at Cabelas as well. I bought the 5.1 lb test and it would break off on a 1/2 lb fish so I sent it back and they sent me another spool. It did the same thing, so I did a strenght test on it and it would break at 1.6 lbs. I sent it back for a refund and respooled with my old standby Maxima 6 lb and 4 lb test. The Maxima is some strong stuff, but it does have a little memory to it. I will never buy anymore Tectan.
