Danoinark Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 Posting this for our buddy Nortrad. As all of us we are still having problems uploading pictures from the site so these are from a photo hosting site. Thank You, Kelly Galloup This was my best trip to the Current River to date. Fished on Friday afternoon, April 3 with nymphs and the 5WT, not much results. Switched over to the 6WT and started working downstream way below Baptist at about 6:30PM or so. Been reading/listening to Kelly Galloup's jerk stripping and slapping the banks. Getting better at it and this thick 18" SLAMMED my #4Black WB. He jumped out of the water twice, made short runs left and right, then went deep into the current and held. I reeled in and walked toward him and he'd move and hold. Finally I could sense he was tiring and brought him to the gravel. Big belly on this brown. He revived very quickly after the photo shoot and shot away. Notice his 'wound' on top? Snagging? Foul hook? Got his cousin 10 minutes later on a sculpin pattern, only about a 10 incher. Had to get back to the pickup, it was getting dark fast. Many thanks and props to Michael and the guys at Backcountry Outfitters (Rio sink tip works great.), Tim at Bass Pro, and to my fishing bud Gabby who couldn't make it, but does well on the Current. This is my PR fish. Previous was a 16" brookie on a lake in WA state, my old home. Streamers work. Nortrad Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
fishinwrench Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 Beautiful Brown. That's a shame about the Gig Scar.... looks like he lived through it ok though.
ekl-stl Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 I too have been listening to Kelly Galloup and have tied up some of his patterns as well. I have not caught anything in only one attempt to the Current using some of his methods but I plan to incorporate this when I make my fall trip to Tanneycomo.
Gavin Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 Looks like a heron took a poke at that fish, IMO...but you never know. Nice catch!
Randall Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 Nice fish. I'm going to be there tomorrow morning, hopefully with a buddy. I plan on burning streamers using the Galloup jerk-strip... maybe stick one of those big boys i've seen down there. Just hope the water isn't too high and dirty. Cute animals taste better.
Nortrad Posted April 11, 2009 Posted April 11, 2009 Thanks guys. It's a fun way to fish, although I'm getting the indicator thing down. Caught 4 the next morning under the Thingamabobber--Baptist working upstream, decent browns. Where's the 'bows? I could catch only 'bows during October when we fished there. According to other guys on here, cloudy water should be good for streamers. I know I'm bringing the sink tip.
