Had a buddy that needed some quick funds and wasn't using it, so I scooped it up for what I consider to be a reasonable price.

but now I have questions. Turns out that the fella doesn't know a whole lot about the motor, and it does have a few quirks. The friend says his grandpa bought it brand new back in the 60's, and the grandson was given it as a gift upon his grandfathers passing. He has used it off and on, but he sold his boat recently. Anyways, the motor doesn't have a known title, and I am hoping someone here can advise me as to what it does need to be legal.

It is apparently a 1963 Evenrude 3 HP 2 stroke. It does have a serial number present... Did it even get issued a title back then? And does it need one now?

What do you all think? Did I get a decent motor? Any suggestions for someone who may be willing to tune it up? Or repaint it?

Cricket, First off let me say, Sorry about your Papaw :(

I can help you with restoring the little Johnnyrude but you will need a title if you plan to register and use it....And that will undoubtedly be a real PIA. The state DMV will not give you any cooperation or even tips as to the best way to clear it up. All they want is the matching papers and they will just treat you like you are wasting their time if you don't have it. That means "probate" if the motor has ever been registered before / or filing for a lost title if it hasn't... and often times it just isn't worth it.

When I come across restorable old motors without titles I usually get them running, clean them up and auction them off on Ebay. There are a couple of groups (clubs) up in Wisconsin/Minnestota that pay top dollar for motors in that year/hp class.....as long as ALL the parts are there.

If you PM me the Model number I can tell you (for sure) what year and model it is.

I have one I need to register too...(1964 Evinrude 3hp Lightwin Folding Motor)....I havent bothered to do it yet, but I was told that you need to get a title by affidavit...First you need to get it inspected by MO Water Patrol officer and they will give you the affidavit to take to DMV. Start by contacting MO water patrol to locate an inspection site near you. Cheers.

Gavin, That only flys if it has never been registered. If there IS a title floating around out there somewhere, it is like pulling teeth.

The WP "inspection" consists of him looking at the model/serial numbers. Your county Sheriff (supposably) can do it too if a WP officer is too far away, which they always are. Good Luck !

In my experience there is ALWAYS a title on record....somewhere. The crap that they will run you through over a few bucks worth of taxes is more than I can stomach. And the folks at DMV seem to get a real kick out of it.

Thanks for the replys, I was told that there are some collector groups taht are into these things, so I was pretty sure I wouldn't lose much. To be honest though, I like it allot. If I can find some way to register it I will attempt to. Sounds like if I am lucky the local sherriff (or conservation agent, my neighbor) knows what I need to do to get it set up. I will contact them, then I will PM you, fishinwrench, when I have decided what I will do with it. If I end up getting it tuned up, I would love to pay someone (you) to do that... It would be a great river motor, I think.
