Danimal Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 I recently purchased a SA type 5 Wet Tip line in a #6 for Stream smallie fishing. I had the retailer weld a loop in the end of it (my nail knot sucks). So far the leader system I've used is 2 ft of 10 lb Vanish flouro leader, followed by 2 ft of the same in 8 lb, and then 2 ft of 4X flouro tippit. Seems to work well, but I'm a little concerned about it cutting into my welded loop over continued use. Am I on the right track here, or does anyone out there know of a better system. Thanks. Dan-o RELEASE THOSE BROWNIES!!

Dan-o You could add about six inches of red amnesia leader butt material loop to looped between your line and 10lb Vanish. I would get the 20lb amnesia. Members Yakfly Posted April 28, 2009 Members Posted April 28, 2009 ...does anyone out there know of a better system. Thanks. Dan-o I don't use the loops. What I do is tie an overhand knot on the end of flyline. Then overhand knot above flyline knot a 4 foot section of 6lb vanish. Then either tie fly to end of this 6 lb section, or surgeon knot a bit more vanish (4lb works well as smallie tippit) Can't get any simpler. Very doubtful that the 6lb vanish will ever cut into your flyline to any extent.
brittsnbirds Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 Try a Feathercraft or similar braided leader for sinking line. They have a loop woven in and a small swivel on the end. When I deep strip for trout I use 4# Vanish approximately 36" long tied directly to the swivel. Works great.
Micheal Kyle Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 A few years back I had a buddy of mine show me what he does, I now use it myself and set the lines up in the shop with the same system. Bend the line over it self make a loop then tie a nail knot then tie two more nail knots. You basically will end up with 3 nail knots tied in a line. put UV knot sense or use polio bond to glue. I would get a nail knot tool and practice this knot set up because it is very useful, you can even use a back to back nail knot to tie and make your own leaders and tippet set ups. I have found that this knot set up is faster than the blood knot or the uni knot. This set up will last a long time goes through the rods guide great. Good luck To Know People Is To Know Thier Ways!
fishinwrench Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 I use the no-knot barbed metal pins in my 6 and 7wt. sink-tip lines, and just tie on 3-4ft. of 4x usually. The way I look at it.... the less knots between me and the fly, the better.
