Frenzel,

You hit the nail on the head, it's fishing-not-catching.

-

I never understood the mentality of people who hire a guide and they seem to think the fish will jump in the boat. It's still fishing. And part of the fun is figuring out what's going to work, when and where. It's far sweeter catching fish on a pattern YOU figure out.

Anywho,.................Nathan, take a look at Jockey's previous posts; within 10 posts, he wants people to give him MORE info on catching fish, than the usual reports..............REALLY !?!?!?!??!. (I don't know of ANY other forum where anglers AND GUIDES, will give you as much info as you get here). He manages to call Babler a JackA$$, (then wants an apology for something Bill said) in the 'Protecting the Bass Population' thread (which will probably get edited now that I point this out), posts pix of bass he supposedly filleted that were caught at The Rock in a C&R discussion, and now badmouths a respected guide...........He's off to a real great start here.

Had great success last summer with Don House! My nephew & I were down from Colorado for the week and had Don showed us the ropes the first day, we were on fish the rest of the week, whenever we wanted, on the spots he took us to and using the techniques he showed us!

Can't go wrong with Capt. Don!

"Imagine reaching for an apple on a tree and having your hand suddenly impaled by a metal hook that drags you—the whole weight of your body pulling on that one hand—out of the air and into an atmosphere in which you cannot breathe. This is what fish experience when they are hooked for “sport.” - Does this make us sportsmen? - HC

Hello all, I would like to chime in here. I must say I absolutely love your lake. I have now been coming down for seven years, once in April, once in July. At home in Chicagoland, I am an avid angler. I envy you guys, and want to compliment you as well. There is not a better forum on fishing anywhere. The guides that contribute here deserve all the respect in the world. They are genuine and give their valuable information up for free. From the guides mentioned here, my son and I have been out with Don House twice, and I would highly recommend his services. Every trip down, I have hired a guide. I belong to the Wilderness Club at Big Cedar, and usually hire a guide through them. My recent trips have been with Tim Paige who is great, most recently in April. We had a great day, and I learned a little more about the lake. I hire a guide to do just that learn more about the lake, but there is more than that, they put you on the fish, depth, method, structure, shoreline etc. My time is valuable, when I am at home I don't mind experimenting, figuring out a pattern, etc. but when I come down there I want to catch fish, and don't want to spend several days figuring out a pattern. Guides are a great resource for us, and this forum is great, I read it year round, even though I can only fish your lake a couple of weeks a year. I would like to meet some of you guys, on one of my trips, I am sure I have seen you on the water. Well good luck to all and catch and release as many as you can.

I have only fished the rock 5 times and Taney 2 times. I am new to fishing. Last spring we hired Bill Beck. Nada, nothing, blanked the whole day. We came back to our lodge and a couple staying at our lodge had a bunch of pictures of spots, and SM that they caught with their guide, Rick LaPointe. I have never gone out with him, however a group of guys that were in a little tourney this spring took first place after hiring him for a day.

If I were going to hire a guide, it would absolutely be Rick LaPointe.

I normally wouldn't get involved, but in this instance I will. A friend and I went with Bill Babler about 2 weeks ago. The bite was tough (all reports for that day seemed to say the same), but Bill did get us on some nice fish and he worked his tail off to make our day. The last couple of hours he was riding the front deck like he was on a bucking bronco, due to the wind and waves.

I'm sure all of the guides on this sight do a wonderful job and I'm not trying to play favorites. It's like somebody else said, "Fising is fishing and not catching." You take the good with the bad and there are certainly bad or hard days. However, Bill Babler did all that I could have asked and was very kind and patient. Thanks Bill, for doing a wonderful job!!!

When I went out with Bill, we were throwing red fins past where the fish would break the water and reel through the area. We hooked up quite a few fish this way. One time a fish broke the surface and Bill bent over and yelled at me me to cast over his head "quick." I cracked up laughing, but wasn't about to cast over his head. He takes it pretty serious, to the point of risking treble hooks in his head.

I've been out with Bill Beck twice. Super nice. Great communicator. Knows how to fish. Knows how to guide. Great equipment. Knows the lake. One of the best, if not the best, guides on the rock.

I've been out with Pete Wenners also. I learned a ton about fishing table rock. Great guide.

I'm sure all of the guides mentioned so far in this thread are good guides, I just haven't fished with the others. Word of mouth is what keeps them in business, so if folks are recomending them on this forum they are probably worth a try. (of course I didn't agree with everything in this thread)

Jockey, Everybody is entitled to an opinion but to put down Beck, come on.

I'd like to thank my FUTURE sponsers: Falcon Rods, Jewel Bait Co, and Seagar

Gonna close this thread. It's been very helpful for the most part and want to thank those who contributed.

Sorry I miss the post about Bill Beck. I would have deleted it but it wouldn't make sense now.

I think Bill has been exonerated from any wrong doing. He is one of the best guides we have in this area- period.

I've said it many times here... if you're going to post negatively, change your screen name to your real name and put your address and phone number on your profile. It's totally chicken to make these kind of remarks and hide behind a screen name.
