abkeenan Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Hey since the topwater bite seems to be heating up or is just about to i was wondering about some alternatives to redfins. There has been a lot of talk about redfins and tinkering with them. I myself dont know how to do the tinkering so i am not even gonna try. That being said i have heard and read in other forum topics here in the past about the Jackall Mikey/Mikey Jr. If anyone here has used them are they worth the $ and if so what size do you prefer? The Sr (6.4 inch), Standard (5.5 inch) or Jr (3.8 inch)? The Sr. is around $35, Standard is $30 and the Jr. is $18. Also what color would u suggest as buying these things isnt cheap so i want to get the right size/color. The Aurora Black seems to me to be the best, most natural color but that just my hunch and i could be wrong. Ive seen the video of this bait and it seems to have great action and takes no TINKERING out of the box to get the desired WAKE EFFECT so that is why i am wanting to purchase one of these baits. Thanks for any info and all comments . Everyones suggestions are appreciated from all who wish to throw their 2 cents in. -Brett
rps Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Xcalibur makes a $10 wake bait I've been itching to use. I own one and will try it during the next several weeks. Look here: http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/s...__SearchResults

Bill Babler Posted May 2, 2009 Posted May 2, 2009 Capt. Don can comment on the Jackalls, cause he is very well versed on their preformance. They scare me. I have a 5 hp outboard that is smaller and does not make the wake of one of those monsters. They work well for him however and thats all that matters. On the broken back minnow, I usually use 1 size, No. 2 owner rooster tail on the rearend and a size, No. 4 gama. on the front hook. I reduce the size of the split ring on both hooks, and use a speed clip for a light weight moving snap on the front, so the bait will shake and rotate at the head. 6 out of 10 work well. 1 out of 10 is a freaking killer, reeled at any spead. When you get a fin like that, for gosh sakes take care of it. http://whiteriveroutfitters.com http://whiteriverlodgebb.com

Gone Fishing Posted May 2, 2009 Posted May 2, 2009 Anyone tried the wake bait made by Buckeye lures. I bought one and going to try it out tomorrow. Ready to see the action it makes. It is also expensive at 18$ a pop.

I will take it back can't wait to try it. Snakem Out .

My first cast with it, I tossed it out around 30ft from the boat just to see the action when a SMJ had seen enough. On a full cast you can even have your rod DOWN and the bait will still stay on top and start waking.
Members skeeterp Posted May 4, 2009 Members Posted May 4, 2009 I've got some Mikey Jr's. They work very well also, no tuning, can use them right out of the package.
abkeenan Posted May 5, 2009 Author Posted May 5, 2009 Hey guys thanks for the info. I think i am going to try a few of the different brands and when i get the chance to get down to the Rock (hopefully in the next couple of weekends) i will throw them and give my opinion on the baits. I am going to compare the river2sea jointed v minnow, buckeye and mikey jr i think. What colors do u guys prefer in topwater baits? Does it matter all that much since the fish are looking up and really only seeing the belley of the bait? Again thanks fellas for your input. -Brett
