flyfishmaster Posted May 23, 2009 Posted May 23, 2009 I went on a two day fishing trip. Day one was at the Current River (Click here for Current River Report) and day two at BSSP. I meet up with Cardilla Cricket at around 8 AM by the High Banks in Zone 2. For me this was one of the slows days of fishing at BSSP I have ever experienced in 15 years at BSSP. I was only able to land 6 fish in the morning. I'm usually able to find the fish but today was the exception to that . I tried over 20 different fly patterns in multiple sizes. I read Laker67's posting about the sowbug, but was only able to land one with that pattern. Here is one point that I found interesting, there is normally a good number of fish in the slack water by the banks but I was unable to find any fish in these areas, even when I walked through those areas I was not able to scare any fish. After lunch Cricket went to fish down stream and I headed up to the top of zone 2 behind the dam. Well my day changed at this time. I fishing along side of the concrete banks about 4 feet out with a Black Zebra midge and a BH Hares Ear. Was able to land 8 fish in the first hour and then 5 in the last hour I fished. So I guess those last two hours made up for the morning. I have never fished that area before, I though I had to change my tactics and it did pay off. Good to meet you Cricket! Later, FFM Woo Hoo Fish On!!
Bman Posted May 23, 2009 Posted May 23, 2009 FFM, Thanks for your posts, you sure had some great weather and beat the holiday crazies. The only good line is a tight line

Later, FFM The fish are really holding in the current with this high water. Just like you found them on the Current and below the dam at bennett. Sounds like you had a great time on the current. One of my all time favorite sight fishing streams. I had good results in the HB hole on thursday and friday. I was sight fishing a tan scud, and caught some good quality fish on thursday. Not so much on friday, but good numbers. The book fish I caught on thursday, I'm sure was a holdover from kid's fishing day. It had a pretty rough look to it. Like Bman said, it's great to get out in good weather and be able to avoid the weekend crowds. Thanks for the report.
FishinCricket Posted May 23, 2009 Posted May 23, 2009 Yes, nice to meet you as well FFM.. You are the lucky person that got to be the first to see me bring a trout to hand with a fly rod.. (an 8 inch trout, but a trout.. Dammit) So it looks like you get a special place in my personal history (like FW bringing me out to fly fish for the first time, for whites).. Thank you both, I promise to return the favor someday. Also thanks to Greg for his gifts.. You guys all have huge hearts, and you have helped me to appreciate the "art" of the fly... Tthe constant advice and reports on this forum from everyone are so helpful that words can't even describe it. I feel a little guilty that I have spent my spare time over the last few days studying knots on this forum rather than doing my duty and giving a report for Wednesday.. I feel like I am accepting an award all the sudden.. (I told myself I wasn't going to cry, LOL) Thanks again all, hope to see you on the stream soon! Til then.. Tight lines! cricket.c21.com
snagged in outlet 3 Posted May 23, 2009 Posted May 23, 2009 Thanks for the reports guys. My brother was down there last weekend and he heard they had a fish kill during the high water the week before. Anybody hear that? He said there were fish, belly up everywhere. I read Weaver's reports but nothing has ever come out about it. SIO3
flyfishmaster Posted May 24, 2009 Author Posted May 24, 2009 SIO3, I did not hear that, but I would not dought it at all because there should have been a few fish holding in the slack water by the banks and I just cound not find them at all. Later, FFM Woo Hoo Fish On!!
