zander Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 It was always amazing to me how much harder on average it is to kill a fox squirrel (red) than a cat squirrel (gray). I had shot a little cat squirrel many times and it is still moving like on a soloflex commercial, and sometimes you just have to sneeze at a fox suirrel and it will fall over dead.

I don't eat many, but I think the grays taste better. Anyone else feel the same way? My gun of choice is a .410 with #6 shot. Angler At Law

FishinCricket Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 Well I don't think it's ethical to go around killing poor little "cat" squirrels.. You guys are horrible! Just kiddin'.. LOL. But I do think it may have been PETA who gave em those cute names, fox and cat squirrel.. Now somebody pass me the smokes and the booze? Let's get this thread a hoppin'! cricket.c21.com

Sounds kinda like sea kittens (PETA's name for fish)
Kayser Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 Fox squirrel gets its name from its similar coloration to the gray fox, and the gray squirrel gets it's name from its bark- somebody thought it sounded like a cat meowing a long time ago apparently, and it stuck. And nice gun. Rob WARNING!! Comments to be interpreted at own risk. Time spent fishing is never wasted.
Members dirty ole james Posted August 8, 2009 Members Posted August 8, 2009 I was always told not to eat small game (squirrel, rabbit) before the first hard frost. Anyone else ever heard this or what are your thoughts??
zander Posted August 8, 2009 Posted August 8, 2009 Yeah my dad used to "remind" me of that at least a hundred times every year. He told me that you should do it for all game but be absolutely religous about it when it came to rabbits. He said the frost killed off the "wolf worms". I always figured cooking it will kill all of the worms, unless it is more likely to get them while cleaning. I used to feed my old squirrel dog the skins but I would always wait until after the first hard freeze before doing this.
