Members abbfish Posted June 22, 2009 Members Posted June 22, 2009 I know how to rig a drop shot, but I'm curious to what size hook to use and which type plastic baits to use. Also, can it be used out in open water? If so, any pointers would be appreciated. Thanks
Dutch Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 There are volumes written about drop shotting. Do a google search and you can fish a few weeks worth of reading.
OzarkFishman Posted June 23, 2009 Posted June 23, 2009 Not trying to be rude, but I think he was wanting to know what you all use on this specific body of water. I know we all have our secret weapons, but the person has to know how to present the drop shot more than what is being used. abbfish, I believe drop shotting is more targeted toward open water. Smallmouth people out west drop shot 50 to 60 feet deep. Like Dutch said, do your homework and you will learn a lot. OzarkFishman
Members abbfish Posted June 24, 2009 Author Members Posted June 24, 2009 You are correct about there being tons of info about it on the internet. I had assumed it was fished off of the bottom and had not thought about it being fished out in the open water with 30 plus feet of water under it. I'm going to give it a try now that the summer heat is here. Thanks guys!
Wayne SW/MO Posted July 1, 2009 Posted July 1, 2009 Its also fished over timber. I use 4# Gami. I think it works well at times in large chunk rock. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Ham Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 I see the drop shot as a rig to catch fish AFTER you have them pinpointed. I fish other stuff until I have the fish located. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
Members abbfish Posted July 2, 2009 Author Members Posted July 2, 2009 I caught a couple spots around some bridge pilings using the drop shot. I ended up using a split shot rig most of the time on some mainlake points. I caught more than I thought I would considering the heat, but they were all short. I did have a drop shot rig hanging over the side of the boat while fishing the points and ended up catching 2 keeper spots that way.
